The Wild Swans - Magnitude (The Sire Years) (2007)

Titled Magnitude, the double CD release contains all sorts of extra goodies. This album is combination of Bringing Home the Ashes (1988)and Space Flower (1990). The disc of Bringing Home the Ashes is supplemented by the b-sides of the two singles, "Young Manhood" and "Bible Dreams". This is a must for any fans of winsome elegaic chiming guitar music, perhaps especially Echo and the Bunnymen fans. The one-note guitar solo in "Young Manhood" is a high point. The second album, Space Flower sees them drifting off-path into a faux bubblegum psychedelia, something Paul Simpson has made a bit of a career out of since, albeit in a more ambient vein. It's all lovely melodies, silly lyrics and phased guitar. The ten original tracks are here supplemented by five demos of tracks that never made the album, plus a Bill Drummond remix (calling KLF fans!) of "Melting Blue Delicious" and a session that never made the album ("Tastes Like Tuesday")

The Wild Swans Biography

Wild Swans 1988

Biography

Although there are countless groups who have released a couple of albums and then disappeared into the shadowy recesses of pop culture trivia, Liverpool's Wild Swans deserved a slightly better fate. Led by former Teardrop Explodes organist Paul Simpson, the group's pair of discs attracted little attention on either side of the Atlantic when released, yet stand up favorably, in retrospect, to the group's better-known contemporaries.
It took Wild Swans a while to get off the ground; an early lineup disbanded in the early '80s after recording a single for the Zoo label, but the band reconvened a few years later and released an official debut, Bringing Home The Ashes, in 1988. Although its most striking attribute was Simpson's vocal similarity to OMD's Andy McCluskey, the disc was filled with handsome, well-crafted guitar pop that gained a bit of color from splashes of organ and piano, and even made an occasional overture toward the dance floor. Simpson and bassist Joe Fearon made a far stronger impression with their 1990 follow-up, however, recruiting outstanding drummer Chris Sharrock and guitarist/vocalist Ian MacNabb from the Icicle Works, as well as that group's producer, Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie. Powered by Sharrock's rock-solid timekeeping, Space Flower touched on mild funk ("Melting Blue Delicious"), psychedelic-tinged rock ("Tangerine Temple") and hummable, chiming pop ("Butterfly Girl;" the Smiths "Immaculate"), while Broudie glazed each of the album's 10 tracks with a likable, confident sheen.
That was the last transmission from the group, who exist now as a mere footnote to late-'80s pop. But those who bother to read the fine print and stumble onto Wild Swans may be in for a pleasant surprise indeed.

The Sound - Shock of Daylight | Heads and Hearts (1996 Re-issue)

The Sound were an English post-punk band, formed in 1979 disbanding in 1988. The band was fronted by Adrian Borland and evolved from his previous band, The Outsiders. They shared record labels with groups such as Echo & the Bunnymen and The Chameleons, and shared stages with Echo & the Bunnymen, the Comsat Angels, the Au Pairs, Modern Eon, Felt, Medium Medium, U2, Public Image Ltd., Eyeless In Gaza, The Stranglers, China Crisis, Thompson Twins, and Aztec Camera.

Founded from the remnants of The Outsiders, the original lineup of The Sound consisted of Adrian Borland (vocals, guitar), Graham Bailey (bass), Mike Dudley (drums) and Benita "Bi" Marshall (keyboards, saxophone, clarinet). In 1979, the band signed a contract with Korova Records, a small label under Warner Brothers, to produce three albums. They debuted with Jeopardy, which received favorable reviews

The The - Soul Mining (1983)

Soul Mining  was The The's second album. (The first, Burning Blue Soul, was released in 1981 and credited to Matt Johnson, but reissues have tended to credit it to The The.) It was released in 1983 and included the UK hit singles "Uncertain Smile" which reached No. 68 in December 1982 and "Perfect" which made No. 71 in September 1983, which featured David Johanson on harmonica. The album version of "Uncertain Smile" featured the piano playing of Jools Holland. Holland revealed in his 2007 biography that it is in fact two separate solos joined together. The original single used flute and sax solos played by Crispin Cioe of the Uptown Horns. The cover artwork is by Andy Johnson, Matt Johnson's brother, aka Andy Dog.

There are four different versions of the album in existence. Johnson originally intended the album to finish with "Giant", but EPIC insisted that 7 songs were too few and a rerecorded version of "Perfect" was added to the US vinyl, CD and cassette versions, much to Johnson's annoyance. The UK cassette version also included the five extra tracks listed below. There was also a limited edition of the original Album which included a 12 inch with an extended remix of Perfect b/sided with Fruit of the Heart & Soup of mixed emotions (XPR1250). For the 20th anniversary of Soul Mining, the album was digitally remastered without "Perfect", as Johnson had originally intended.

The album appears on the list of "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".

The Beautiful South - Gold (2006)

Gold by The Beautiful South is the third greatest hits album to be released by the band. It is similar in design to other "Gold" albums released by bands either currently or previously of various labels under the Universal Music Group. The album is a 2 disc collection of both single and album tracks taken from the first 8 of the bands back catalogue. It had zero input from the band.

The Beautiful South were an English alternative rock group formed at the end of the 1980s by two former members of Hull group The Housemartins, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway. The duo were initially joined by Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums) and Dave Rotheray (guitar), all of whom stayed with the group throughout their 19-year career. Later additions included female vocalist Briana Corrigan; she was replaced by Jacqui Abbott, who in turn was replaced by Alison Wheeler.

The group broke up in January 2007, claiming the split was due to "musical similarities", having sold around 6,500,000 records worldwide. In January 2009, it was announced that the former members Dave Hemingway, Alison Wheeler, and Dave Stead would reform under the name New Beautiful South which was later changed to The South.

The Damned - Anything (1986)

The Damned are an English gothic punk band formed in London in 1976. They were the first punk rock band from the United Kingdom to release a single ("New Rose"), an album (Damned Damned Damned), to have a record on the UK music charts, and to tour the United States. The Damned later evolved into one of the forerunners of the gothic genre.

They have incorporated numerous styles into their music and image, including: garage rock, psychedelic rock, cabaret, and the theatrical rock of Screaming Lord Sutch and Alex Harvey. Lead singer Dave Vanian's vocal style has been described as similar to a crooner. The Damned have dissolved and reformed many times, with Vanian as the sole constant member. However, the lineups have always included either guitarist Captain Sensible and/or drummer Rat Scabies, who are both founding members. The current line-up includes Vanian, Captain Sensible, Monty Oxy Moron, Pinch and Stu West.

Anything was The Damned's seventh studio album, released in 1986.

Between July and August 1985 the band and producer Jon Kelly decamped to Puk Recording Studios in Gjerlev, Denmark to record their follow-up. In contrast to the straightforward sessions for their previous album, recording was rife with problems. Kelly attempted to steer the band towards the 'Goth Opera' style that had served them so well, but the band wanted to move in a new direction, with a psychedelic rock flavour – epitomised by their cover of Love’s "Alone Again Or".

The album received lackluster reviews, and, considering the expenditure involved, was a commercial flop, peaking at #40 on the UK charts and spending just two weeks in the Top 100. It would lead to the band’s contract with MCA being terminated, and would be the band’s last album for a decade.

The distinctive carving on the cover was made by Howard Rayhoult. On some pressings of the vinyl release this was unpainted, while some where coloured by Jef Hartley and Booce. The CD version of the album uses the coloured cover.

Anything spawned the UK hit singles "Anything" (#32), "Gigolo" (#29) and "Alone Again Or" (#27).

It was re-released on CD in 2009, and contained many extra tracks of remixes and live performances.

wiki

Dave Vanian (David Letts), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns) and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) had been members of the band Masters of the Backside, which also included future Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. Brian James (Brian Robertson) had been a member of the punk band London SS, who never played live but included musicians who later found fame in The Clash and Generation X. Scabies knew James through a failed audition as drummer for London SS. When the two decided to start their own band, James and Scabies had invited Sid Vicious and Dave Vanian to audition to be the singer of The Damned. Only Vanian showed up, and so he became the frontman of the band.

Remembrance Day (Lyrics)

In the forest, in the snow all those many years ago
Pale stones and epitaphs mourning bells and half-mast flags
In the cemetery where they fell all those many years ago
And now it's just a memory eroded by the years

Forgotten heroes underground wrinkled faces gather round
Pale stones and epitaphs roses on a barbed wire fence
Winter landscapes never change oh it must have been the same
In the forest, in the snow all those many years ago

Remembrance Day all they have is memories
From photographs in silver frames upon the mantelpiece
Remembrance Day lost forever in the fields
Of foreign lands many miles away

In the forest, in the snow all those many years ago
Bombs and victims blown sky high buried where they lie
A generation underground wrinkled faces gather round
Songs will never bring them back never bring them back

nowhere girl you're living in a dream,
nowhere girl you stay behind the scenes,
nowhere girl you never go outside,
nowhere girl cause you prefer to hide.

every night, every day
in that all old familiar light
you hang up when I call you at home.
and I try to get through
and I try to talk to you
but there's something stopping me from getting through.

nowhere girl what you had you need,
nowhere girl all functional and neat,
nowhere girl in self-imposed exile,
nowhere girl a martyr-like denial.

B-Movie - The Platinum Collection (2006)

B-Movie were a futurist band from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England, active in the first half of the 1980s. They were signed to the Some Bizzare record label, and had a track "Moles" featured on the original Some Bizzare Album.

Background

BackgroundIn 1981, they signed to Phonogram imprint Deram and had their biggest UK commercial success when their single "Remembrance Day", which reached #61 in the UK Singles Chart.[1] The follow-up single, "Marilyn Dreams", failed to chart.

In 1982, they released "Nowhere Girl", which made the Top 10 in many European countries and reached #68 in the United Kingdom, but there was no follow-up and no sign of an album. The popular webcomic Nowhere Girl was named after this single.

Keyboard player Rick Holliday left in 1983 to form Six Sed Red with Soft Cell associate Cindy Ecstasy. Paul Statham switched from guitar to keyboards and was briefly replaced by Stuart McLean (Charming Snakes) for an Israel Tour. Their biggest success was having their song "Dream Baby" covered by Bananarama on their eponymous 1984 LP. The rest of the band re-surfaced in 1984 (with Adi Hardy on guitar) with the single "A Letter From Afar" produced by John "Jellybean" Benitez but this failed to chart.

Towards the end of 1985, they finally released an album with Sire Records called Forever Running containing re-recorded versions of the two hits, but both it and the single "Switch On Switch Off" were flops despite a tour to promote them.

The band broke up soon after. Frontman Steve Hovington formed a band called One in the late 1980s with Seven Webster and drummer Bob Thompson, releasing an album and two singles on Chrysalis.

Drummer Graham Boffey meanwhile joined Slaughterhouse 5 releasing two singles "Pathetic Girlfriend" and "Things She Did", and an album, Wide Open on IRS. After this venture, Boffey and Davy Lawrence formed Enormous.

Guitarist Paul Statham collaborated with ex-Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy, as part of Murphy's solo backing band 'The Hundred Men', probably making him the most successful member in the aftermath of B-Movie's demise. He co-wrote and performed on Murphy's solo albums Love Hysteria(1988) and Deep (1990). Statham has also co-written several songs, including "Nail Through My Heart", on the Lostboy! AKA Jim Kerr album.

After a long hiatus, in March 2006, B-Movie performed at The Metro nightclub in London

Turn To The Sky (Lyrics)

Ooooooo-oooooh
You took the words right from my lips, without asking
I've played the scene before and I won't be the one left crying
And if you think that love's for sale, well I'm not buying
What you've bought before you can buy no more
'Cause I'm all out of love, I can't take no more

Ooooooo-oooooh
Tonight is fading fast the sun is rising
I've been down so many times now I'm realising
Real love is hard to find take it while you can get it
I don't know if he's still here you keep telling me to forget

Still I wake at night and I call your name
Dreaming of you
I wake at night always the same
I call your name but you sleep right through

And love is the light in your face turn to the sky
I know now I know now love won't pass you by
Love is the light in your face turn to the sky
I know now I know your eyes don't lie

All the vicious games we play they mean nothing to me
All I know is your touch and the way love should be
Deep down within your eyes a war is raging
What you fought before you can fight no more
'Cause inside your heart is breaking

Still I wake at night and I call your name
Dreaming of you
I wake at night always the same
I call your name but you sleep right through

And love is the light in your face turn to the sky
I know now I know now love won't pass you by
Love is the light in your face turn to the sky
I know now I know your eyes, your eyes don't lie

Still I wake at night and I call your name
Dreaming of you
I wake at night always the same
I call your name but you sleep right through

And love is the light in your face turn to the sky
I know now I know now love won't pass you by
Love is the light in your face turn to the sky
I know now I know your eyes don't lie

The March Violets are an English goth rock band of the 1980s, incorporating singers of both sexes, drum machine rhythms and echo laden electric guitar, much in the way of scene mates The Sisters of Mercy, who also originated from the city of Leeds. Seven March Violets' singles have made it into the UK Indie Chart; Natural History LP also was an indie hit (#3, 1984).

History

The original band members met while at Leeds University in 1981. Tom Ashton and Laurence "Loz" Elliot played lead and bass guitar, while vocals were handled by both Simon "Detroit" Denbigh and Rosie Garland. Percussion was provided by a drum machine, a feature that a number of bands in the burgeoning Leeds scene had in common. Fellow student Andrew Eldritch, lead singer of The Sisters of Mercy, released the bands first single on his Merciful Release label in 1982. The "Religious As Hell" single consisted of four tracks that reflected strong punk and garage rock influences in the guitar work, along with contrasting vocals from the two singers. Denbigh's male vocals varied from being essentially spoken to a harsh yelling, whereas Garland's were high pitched and almost operatic. The band garnered positive reviews for this first release, which was soon followed in 1983 by a second single for Merciful Release. "Grooving In Green" featured a more confident sounding production, aided by a more powerful sounding drum machine, and received more positive reaction from the UK national music press.

At this point, the band appeared to fall out of favour with Andrew Eldritch, and they established their own Rebirth record label to handle future releases. The "Crow Baby" single shortly followed, and repeated the pattern of good reviews and a good showing in the UK independent record chart. The title track of the next single, "Snake Dance", was arguably the band's creative high point. Additional female vocals were provided by Cleo Murray, and for the two final independent releases, "Walk Into The Sun" and "Deep", Rosie was no longer a part of the band. The bands sound was also changing towards a more pop-oriented sound, and Simon Denbigh was pushed out of the band before going on to form The Batfish Boys.

An increasingly commercial sounding March Violets began to receive negative reviews from the music press. The accusations of selling out worsened as the band signed to major label London Records, which also saw them add drummer Andy Tolson to the line up. The subsequent "Turn To The Sky" single was released through London Records, although still bearing the Rebirth imprint. Reviews were disparaging, and despite featuring on the soundtrack to the film Some Kind of Wonderful, the band failed to find a new audience and broke up in 1987.

Following the split, Tom Ashton went on to perform with Hard Rain and long running goth band Clan of Xymox, while Cleo Murray briefly fronted the Lovecraft in the early 1990s.

Rosie Garland went on to become an acclaimed poet and cabaret performer, performing under the name Rosie Lugosi. She then became the victim of a stalker, with the court case being lead article in the Manchester Evening News.

Soft Cell are an English synthpop duo who came to prominence in the early 1980s. They consist of vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. The duo split in 1984, but reformed in the early 2000s to tour and released a new album in 2002. Their songs have been covered by various artists including Nine Inch Nails, David Gray, Nouvelle Vague and A-ha. Soft Cell's track "Memorabilia" recognized the band as pioneers of techno style.  SAY HELLO WAVE GOODBYE (LYRICS)

Standing in the door of the Pink Flamingo
Crying in the rain
It was a kind of so so love
And I'm going to make sure it never
Happens again
You and I
It had to be
The standing joke of the year
You were a sleep around
A lost and found
And not for me I fear

I tried to make it work
You in a cocktail skirt
And me in a suit
(Well it just wasn't me)
You're used to wearing less
And now your life's a mess
So insecure you see
I put up with all the scenes
And this is one scene
That's going to be played my way

Take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
Take a look at my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello goodbye
Say hello wave goodbye

Under the deep red light
I can see the makeup sliding down
Hey little girl you will always make up
So take off that unbecoming frown
What about me- well
I'll find someone
That's not going cheap in the sales
A nice little housewife
Who'll give me a steady life
And won't keep going off the rails

Take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
Take a look at my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello goodbye
Say hello wave goodbye

We've been involved
For quite a while now
And to keep you secret has been hell
We're strangers meeting for the first time, okay?
Just smile and say hello
Say hello then wave goodbye

Say hello then wave goodbye (x3)
Say hello wave goodbye
Say hello then wave goodbye
Say hello say goodbye
Goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye

Goodbye...

WHAT (LYRICS)

Do you want me to
Get down on my knees
Beg you baby, please
Cry a million tears
Do you want me to
Call you on the phone
Beg you to come home
Think of all the years
When I once lived in paradise
When the love light
shone in your eyes
Chorus:
Oh baby
What can I do when I
still love you
What can I say when I
still want you
What can I do
What can I say
You'll never know this way
Do you want me to
Follow you around
Everywhere in town
Do you want a clown
Why do you
Treat me mean and cruel
Breaking every rule
Can I be your fool
We can make this a happy home
So come back where you belong

Chorus
Please forgive me,
come back, and then
We can fall in love
Over and over and over
and over again
Oh baby
What can I do when I
still love you
What can I say when I
still want you
Won't you come back
Oh baby, what can I say
I said, what can I do
Oh baby, what can I say
I said, won't you come back
I said, won't you come back
I said, what can I do
I said, what can I say
I said, won't you come back
I said, won't you come back
Won't you come back
Oh baby, won't you come back
Oh baby, what can I say
I said, what, what,
what? can I say
Won't you come back
Won't you come back
Won't you
Won't you come back
What can I say
What can I say
What can I do
What can I do
What can I say
What can I say
Won't you come back
Won't you come back
What can I do, do, do, do
What can I do
(What, what, what?)

kitchen sink drama (lyrics)

Passing time in the afternoon
Cleaning the bathroom floor
Rearrange things in the dining room
Covers the chip on the kitchen door
The paperboy winks as he hands her a paper
He's cheekier every day
She undoes her apron and sinks on the sofa
Throws all her household chores away

She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye

Puts on her make-up
And smoothes down her dress
And finds the right words to say
Holds a remaining spark of beauty
Escape is only a romance away
Troubles come flooding back with her migraine
She trembles and shuts her eyes
It's a good thing that friends come in little bottles
Time to shake up and prepare for the lies

She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye

Pushing the hair back from her face
Shaping her thoughts in the sky
Heaven is through her kitchen window
"Pity it's only a dream", she sighs
Imagines herself as Elizabeth Taylor
The paperboy cycles away
She turns on the stove
Soon her husband is home
"Hello dear, it's been such a long day"

She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye
She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye

TAINTED LOVE (LYRICS)

Sometimes I feel I've got to run away
I've got to get away from the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share seems to go nowhere and I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night

Once I ran to you (I ran) now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love, tainted love

Now I know I've got to run away I've got to get away
You don't really want it any more from me to make things right
You need someone to hold you tight and you'LL think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way

Once I ran to you (I ran) now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love, tainted love

Don't touch me please I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so now I'm going to pack my things and go
Tainted love, tainted love, tainted love, tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love, touch me baby, tainted love
Tainted love, tainted love, tainted love
