Propaganda - Present The Nine Lives of Dr. Mabuse (1984)

The third ZTT release, Propaganda Present the Nine Lives of Dr. Mabuse by the Dusseldorf group Propaganda, represented the next stage in this master plan of raiding the (early, European) twentieth century. "The children of Fritz Lang and Giorgio Moroder" is how NME's Chris Bohn tagged Propaganda. Inspired by Lang's expressionist trilogy of movies about a shadowy master criminal, "Dr. Mabuse" was epic Eurodisco, for which Horn and engineer Steve Lipson constructed a monumental edifice of arching synths and percussion as imposing as marble colonnades.

Propaganda's conceptualist, Ralf Dorper, justified this "very bombastic sound" to ZigZag. "The character Mabuse was symbolizing something extraordinary, something more or less unreal, so we had to have an unreal production." Formerly in metal-bashing pioneers Die Krupps, Dorper was a fanatic cinephile who preferred movies to music. "Cinema is much more inspirational to me," he declared. "It's much more multi-leveled: you have to have a storyline, a setting, a soundtrack."

The Railway Children - Gentle Sound (2003)

An album which highlights the 'Best Of ' The Railway Children as chosen by the fans. These tracks span the life of TRC and include Factory, Virgin and the more recent Ether songs. This time however the recordings are largely acoustic. Recorded in Tokyo, Gary Newby has stripped the songs bare and then rebuilt each song with a new enthusiasm, giving each song a completely different and more contemporary feel. Mainly acoustic, giving the album the kind of warmth you'd expect from an MTV unplugged album. Above all though the album gives space for Gary Newby's true vocal depth, reminiscent at times of a young Scott Walker. In addition to the 13 acoustic tracks, there are 2 new (2002) tracks released for the first time.

The Railway Children were just one of a string of successful independent bands poached and groomed for obscurity by the majors in the second half of the '80s. Anyone jonesing for, ironically, something close to the Postcard sound-sparkling guitars, a melancholy, yearning tenor-will swoon for this quietly gorgeous album of acoustic revamps. Three tracks from their sole album for Factory (Reunion Wilderness, 1987) are obvious highlights, especially the irresistible lilt of "Brighter". You'd think, given the Coldplay/Keane hegemony, there'd be an audience for this superior version: gentle, epic music but, here, with a soul. (UNCUT magazine)

The Shining Hour - Long Lost (2006)

Mark Cohen has been recording original songs on his own and as part of Horsham pop duo, The Beat Circus since 1985. Although The Beat Circus split in 1989, Mark continued to record his ideas to a four track Portastudio. During 1991 he decided to pool together some of the many songs he had recorded and put them out under the name, The Shining Hour. This venture was partly inspired by the success of Neale Harmer's own recording project, Fragile.

Mark compiled two tapes for issue, the first of which was 'Evidence'. 'Evidence' sold reasonably well (especially in Europe) but failed to make the necessary number of contacts to ensure worthwhile duplication of the follow-up, 'Resolution'. Apart from issue to a few die-hard fans 'Resolution' and subsequent releases have only had a limited issue.

The Shining Hour now has an ever growing catalogue of releases, the latest being "Long Lost" in November 2006. Although 'Evidence' may have given the idea that The Shining Hour was just jangly pop, selected songs from the 'Electric' tape onwards tell a different story. Songs such as 'Maybe This Time', 'Been In Love Before' and 'So Soon' could be categorised as ballads whilst 'Weak', 'Determined' and 'Run Away' should just be played loud!
In October 1998, Apricot Records released the first ever Shining Hour 7 inch vinyl single. The E.P. entitled "Five O'Clock Rise included the songs; "I Won't Be Home", "Five O'Clock Rise", "Determined" and "Something". See the Single page for more details. In February 1999 Apricot Records released a 15 track CD album entitled "Wait All Summer". This is essentially a compilation of songs chosen from recordings made over the past 10 years. Some of the songs have never appeared before on Shining Hour cassette releases. In April 2002, Apricot Records released the second Shining Hour album, the 12 track CD "Postcards From Home"

The Best of The Icicle Works (1992)

To most people, The Icicle Works may stir vague memories of Love is a Wonderful Colour from the early 80s but this CD shows how much more there was to the band. Early classics like Hollow Horse are mixed with newer material such as Evangeline, Who do you want for your love? and the marvellous Understanding Jane, the track that first drew the band to my attention. Best track, though, is the new mix of When it all comes down - still one of my favourite all-time songs. Since the band split, Ian McNabb has produced some great solo stuff and Chris Sharrock has drummed for The Lightning Seeds, World Party, The La's and, currently, Robbie Williams but nothing will beat the strength of these tracks. Check it out and rediscover one of the most neglected bands of the 1980s.

Black - Wonderful Life (1987)

"Wonderful Life" is a song by British band Black from their 1987 album of the same name. Written by lead singer Colin Vearncombe, the song was released twice as a single and was successful the second time, becoming a top ten hit in Switzerland, Germany, UK, France, Austria and Italy."

Black is the musical vehicle for British singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe (born 26 May 1962, Liverpool, England). 1985 was a gloomy year for Vearncombe, causing him to write the ironically entitled minor key song "Wonderful Life". Released independently at first, this track got Black noticed by A&M Records who signed Vearncombe and launched his international career. At first, the singles "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Sweetest Smile" were moderately successful in the UK alone, but the third single, a re-release of "Wonderful Life", was a massive hit worldwide. The album of the same name, released in 1987, had similar success, reaping commercial and critical acclaim.

Remembrance Day (Lyrics)

In the forest, in the snow all those many years ago
Pale stones and epitaphs mourning bells and half-mast flags
In the cemetery where they fell all those many years ago
And now it's just a memory eroded by the years

Forgotten heroes underground wrinkled faces gather round
Pale stones and epitaphs roses on a barbed wire fence
Winter landscapes never change oh it must have been the same
In the forest, in the snow all those many years ago

Remembrance Day all they have is memories
From photographs in silver frames upon the mantelpiece
Remembrance Day lost forever in the fields
Of foreign lands many miles away

In the forest, in the snow all those many years ago
Bombs and victims blown sky high buried where they lie
A generation underground wrinkled faces gather round
Songs will never bring them back never bring them back

The Very Best of Soft Cell (2002)

The Very Best of Soft Cell is an official compilation album by Soft Cell. The album was released on April 16, 2002 and was approved by the band; it includes most of the hit singles and also some b-sides, such as Insecure Me (in a newly edited version) and It's A Mug's Game. The song Numbers was also considerably shortened for this release, but it's AA side Barriers is missing. Two new songs, Somebody, Somewhere, Sometime and Divided Soul, and two brand new remixes of Tainted Love and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye were also included. The album reached #37 on the UK Top 40 chart.

Soft Cell are an English synthpop duo who came to prominence in the early 1980s. They consist of vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. The duo is most widely known for their 1981 worldwide hit version of "Tainted Love" and influential multi-platinum debut Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. In the UK, they had ten Top 40 hits, including "Bedsitter" (#4), "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" (#3), "Torch" (#2), and "What!" (#3), and also had four Top 20 albums between 1981 and 1984. The duo split in 1984, but reformed in the early 2000s to tour and released a new album in 2002. Their songs have been covered by various artists including Nine Inch Nails, David Gray, Nouvelle Vague and A-ha. Soft Cell's track "Memorabilia" recognized the band as pioneers of techno style. The duo have sold 10 millions records worldwide.

 SAY HELLO WAVE GOODBYE (LYRICS)

Standing in the door of the Pink Flamingo
Crying in the rain
It was a kind of so so love
And I'm going to make sure it never
Happens again
You and I
It had to be
The standing joke of the year
You were a sleep around
A lost and found
And not for me I fear

I tried to make it work
You in a cocktail skirt
And me in a suit
(Well it just wasn't me)
You're used to wearing less
And now your life's a mess
So insecure you see
I put up with all the scenes
And this is one scene
That's going to be played my way

Take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
Take a look at my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello goodbye
Say hello wave goodbye

Under the deep red light
I can see the makeup sliding down
Hey little girl you will always make up
So take off that unbecoming frown
What about me- well
I'll find someone
That's not going cheap in the sales
A nice little housewife
Who'll give me a steady life
And won't keep going off the rails

Take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
Take a look at my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello goodbye
Say hello wave goodbye

We've been involved
For quite a while now
And to keep you secret has been hell
We're strangers meeting for the first time, okay?
Just smile and say hello
Say hello then wave goodbye

Say hello then wave goodbye (x3)
Say hello wave goodbye
Say hello then wave goodbye
Say hello say goodbye
Goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye

Goodbye...

WHAT (LYRICS)

Do you want me to
Get down on my knees
Beg you baby, please
Cry a million tears
Do you want me to
Call you on the phone
Beg you to come home
Think of all the years
When I once lived in paradise
When the love light
shone in your eyes
Chorus:
Oh baby
What can I do when I
still love you
What can I say when I
still want you
What can I do
What can I say
You'll never know this way
Do you want me to
Follow you around
Everywhere in town
Do you want a clown
Why do you
Treat me mean and cruel
Breaking every rule
Can I be your fool
We can make this a happy home
So come back where you belong

Chorus
Please forgive me,
come back, and then
We can fall in love
Over and over and over
and over again
Oh baby
What can I do when I
still love you
What can I say when I
still want you
Won't you come back
Oh baby, what can I say
I said, what can I do
Oh baby, what can I say
I said, won't you come back
I said, won't you come back
I said, what can I do
I said, what can I say
I said, won't you come back
I said, won't you come back
Won't you come back
Oh baby, won't you come back
Oh baby, what can I say
I said, what, what,
what? can I say
Won't you come back
Won't you come back
Won't you
Won't you come back
What can I say
What can I say
What can I do
What can I do
What can I say
What can I say
Won't you come back
Won't you come back
What can I do, do, do, do
What can I do
(What, what, what?)

kitchen sink drama (lyrics)

Passing time in the afternoon
Cleaning the bathroom floor
Rearrange things in the dining room
Covers the chip on the kitchen door
The paperboy winks as he hands her a paper
He's cheekier every day
She undoes her apron and sinks on the sofa
Throws all her household chores away

She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye

Puts on her make-up
And smoothes down her dress
And finds the right words to say
Holds a remaining spark of beauty
Escape is only a romance away
Troubles come flooding back with her migraine
She trembles and shuts her eyes
It's a good thing that friends come in little bottles
Time to shake up and prepare for the lies

She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye

Pushing the hair back from her face
Shaping her thoughts in the sky
Heaven is through her kitchen window
"Pity it's only a dream", she sighs
Imagines herself as Elizabeth Taylor
The paperboy cycles away
She turns on the stove
Soon her husband is home
"Hello dear, it's been such a long day"

She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye
She's in a fantasy
It's not so hard to see
That she is living a lie
She'll never be the same
She shuts her eyes again
Waves all her worries goodbye

TAINTED LOVE (LYRICS)

Sometimes I feel I've got to run away
I've got to get away from the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share seems to go nowhere and I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night

Once I ran to you (I ran) now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love, tainted love

Now I know I've got to run away I've got to get away
You don't really want it any more from me to make things right
You need someone to hold you tight and you'LL think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way

Once I ran to you (I ran) now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love, tainted love

Don't touch me please I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so now I'm going to pack my things and go
Tainted love, tainted love, tainted love, tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love, touch me baby, tainted love
Tainted love, tainted love, tainted love

Dont You (Forget About Me) (Lyrics)

Hey, hey, hey ,hey
Ohhh...

Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and

Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me

Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

Will you recognise me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ohhhh.....

Don't you try to pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security

Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby

Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me

As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away

Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on - call my name
Will you all my name?

I say :
