*Original Notes*

One of, if not the finest rehearsals of the man's career, and thankfully a stellar quality soundboard recording to match the content. This rehearsal has been circulating in various degrees of quality for years with Sabotage's 'Purple Rush Volume 2' perhaps being the most popular thus far. Sabotage's was good, great in parts, but the audible hiss throughout 'Purple Rain' and a number of small edits during the rehearsal were a source of frustration for me. Thankfully this release has zero hiss, a running order which appears to be a true reflection of the rehearsal (Sabotage placed both versions of 'Let's Go Crazy' back-to-back which always seemed strange) and the overall clarity of the soundboard recording is head-and-shoulders above any other. There's no comparison when it comes to the two as this is far superior, but of the 3 major glitches in the recording (which affects both), it should be pointed out that everything is left "as is" on here, so we get the original intro to the first version of 'Let's Go Crazy' (Sabotage edited in a different recording) complete with the "when you call up that nigger in Beverley Hills" spoken intro, we get a little distortion and/or tape-chew on 'Baby I'm A Star' here with the original "turn around, 1..2..3" intro which Sabotage removed, and finally the tape fluctuation and distortion on 'D.M.S.R.' is left on here untouched and unedited. Those are the three main flaws with the recording, but they account for 1 minute in total and are minimal when considering the overall quality. The originality of the recording aside, it's also simply a clearer, cleaner recording which allows you to hear things not audible on other versions - such as background comments by Prince during the band improvisation section. Excellent soundboard, excellent rehearsal and an excellent improvement over any other version - I really do enjoy this release immensely. The content is the real icing on the cake with a nasty-as-you-like (and we like) 'Computer Blue' to rival any other version, a stunning 'Electric Intercourse, a frenetic 'D.M.S.R.' which simply goes on and on and on...and on, and a 24 minute segment of the band fooling around with numerous genuinely funny moments and snippets from a vast array of songs from the James Bond theme through to 'Catch A Falling Star'. This isn't perfect, and outside the 3 flaws on the recording mentioned above, Prince's vocals on 'I Would Die 4 U' are raspy and hazy, but that also affects all other versions of the rehearsal, so no fault lies with FBG. If you only ever grab one version of this rehearsal, make it this one. If you already have this rehearsal, get this version, grab a set of earphones, turn it up loud and enjoy.

Deejay: Helen Leicht, from WIOQ-FM in Philadelphia, and yes, you guessed it, this is another tape we've borrowed from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection. 

"Throw Your Arms Around Me" is a Hunters & Collectors song.

The band does a pisstake version of Split Enz "I Got You," in a lounge music style.  The show cuts off after that on this tape.

Also...and this is a speculation, not a fact...it may be that there were two sets, an early and a late show.  Do any members of Our Beloved Audience know if that is a possibility? 

Other notes:  Something So Strong (live) was a non-LP b-side on the Sister Madly CD single.

There is a bootleg CD "Live In Philadelphia '87" on the "ROXVOX" label that matches the Concert Vault audio.  It appears to be out of print but there's one copy up on EBAY and another on Amazon, so if you like this, you may want to go grab one.

Another dip into the vast pool of WMMR recordsing provided to us by our pal, Sam Eliot's Mustache.  He ships 'em across the country, I digitize 'em, and you get to hear the results.

This one is Dave Mason at the Chestnut Cabaret.  Wiki says, "Chestnut Cabaret was a nightclub located at 38th & Ludlow Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It opened in 1978 and closed in 1994, then it reopened in 1995 renamed the Blockley before its closure in 2013."

Sam happened to have an original ad for the show, clipped out of the newspaper. With that ad to guide me, I found the ad (and two more from earlier dates) on Newspapers.com.

I've now figured out that the Philadelphia Inquirer had a Friday entertainment section where the club and concert ads were placed.

It was different here.... while we had two San Francisco newspapers "...in 1965, the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner operated under a Joint Operating Agreement... The Examiner published the Sunday paper's news sections and glossy magazine, and the Chronicle contributed the features."
Entertainment ads were in the S.F. Chronicle's "Datebook" feature - locally referred to as "the pink section" because they originally published it on pink newsprint.

Anyway....concert ads were on Sundays here; it's weird to find 'em on a Friday in Philadelphia.  What day did they run in your area?

This is NOT GOOD.  It's probably recorded on a boombox, although it may as well have been some child's My First Sony.  It's got people bumping the microphone, talking, and Hitchcock sounds distant.  That said, it's not the worst thing I've ever heard and Hitchcock completists will want a copy.

I got this in trade and kept it around because I used to shop at Revolver Records.  It was a great record store (and sort-of still is, as it was bought out in the 1990s by the bookstore down the block and is still selling music, just under the name Green Apple Music).

No date...but Hitchcock played the I-Beam twice in 1986, on March 17 and November 1.

Okay...once more we dip into the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection for another WMMR-FM broadcast with another Philadelphia Favorite: the Hooters!

The show itself takes place in Atlantic City, which Google Maps tells me is roughly 60 miles to the southeast of Philadelphia.  

As a West Coast guy, I'm clueless about the East Coast.  

First of all, is it okay to call it "Philly" or is that nickname like "Frisco" which sets some San Franciscan's teeth on edge?  (Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï does not care what you call it, but I'm from the East Bay).

Secondly, how far did WMMR's broadcast signal reach?  The Bay Area is full of hills (1,000 to 1,700 feet) and some dinky mountains (2,400 to 4,000 feet).  No San Francisco FM station reaches sixty miles out due to the terrain, but New Jersey looks pretty flat.   Can an FM signal actually go that far?

I understand they weren't actually broadcasting FROM the beach, the antenna was whereever it always was....come to think of it, where do you put antennas when there's no nearby hill or mountain?

The setlist is huge, it's almost an hour and a half of music.  One of the songs - "A Man Understands" was an obscure B-side.  According to Discogs, the studio version was only released in Japan on a 3-inch "mini CD.

Another low generation cassette that I received in trade back in the 80s.  This one is a Dutch mono radio broadcast. As was typical of tape trading when a show was short of filling a tape, my trading partner included bonus tracks.  This one has "Tears" added from an unknown radio source (also mono), plus stereo tracks from the David Letterman and Tonight Show.

The show is drawn primarily from his first album (released Jan. 10, 1985).  There are some interesting covers.  While "Diddley Daddy" would turn up two albums later on Heart Shaped World, and "Dixie Fried" finally saw the light of day in 2011, the rest remain unreleased.

Pandora's Music Box Festivals were held in 1983, 1984, and 1985.

"De Doelen is a concert venue and convention centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was originally built in 1934 but then destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment of Rotterdam in May 1940 at the outset of World War II. It was rebuilt in 1966, originally with one hall to which two more were added in the 1990s.

It has a variety of facilities, including the Grote Zaal (Grand Hall), a 2,200-seat concert hall, two smaller halls which each seat about 700 people."

The 1985 concert is noteworthy for a complex plan involving photographing everyone there (which apparently actually happened...).  I've included a press release with the full plan, but the short version was:

"all visitors, musicians, festival workers and building staff will be photographed upon entering the premises. The roughly 7600 negatives will be transported by armoured car to a safe place. On September 26, 1990 the negatives will be locked away in a new Pandora's Box placed under the care of the dutch government."

The new negatives will be locked away in Pandora's Box for another 76 years...this cycle will be repeated for 76 x 76 years...On October 13, 7761, the last Pandora's Box will be opened and the negatives become public domain.

There is only one way in which the cycle can be stopped...  The photographs from the negatives will be on sale for 760 days (from Dec. 11, till January 10, 1993)....the intending purchaser will be required to pay u.s. dollars 76,000,000."

This alternate plan included ..."the launching of a rocket containing...negatives...into outer space..." to the centre of the Milky Way, in search of the presumed black hole of our galaxy..."

Needless to say... other than the taking pictures of everyone there, none of the rest of that came to pass.

Another multigeneration tape...a bit of hiss, but not too bad.  This one's a soundboard, probably a second or third generation down the line.

The show fell between 1988's "Pinker And Prouder Than Previous," and 1990's "Party of One."  Nick had just wrapped up a tour as the opening act for Elvis Costello the prior night in Chicago.  Both Costello, Kim Wilson, and James Burton were in town to play at Village Music's 21st Birthday Party at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley the next night (April 24th).

While the print ad lists this as "Nick Lowe SOLO," half the show is Nick with various combinations of the other five musicians.  Announcing duties are by the fabulous Bonnie Simmons, who at the time was a deejay on KFOG-FM...but her Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame entry reads, "pioneer in free-form radio, Simmons was instrumental to the success of KSAN during its Jive 95 heyday. She also worked locally at KFOG, Live 105 (KITS), KOFY-FM, Double 99 (KDBK) and KUSF, and currently hosts a weekly show on KPFA."

I digitized the Hoovers portion of this tape back in 2010, and shared it with the Tone and Wave blog.  You can see that post at:

The file was picked up a month later in 2011 by Marco On The Bass, who wrote a great piece on the Hoovers. He contacted their keyboard player about the tape. I urge you to read it, it tells you more about the Hoovers than I ever could. That's still up at:

It looks like both of their links are dead, so I figured I'd put the Hoovers back in circulation, along with the two other bands on the bill that night.

Cha Cha Billy was pop-rock, and they played all over the Bay Area for roughly 1979 to 1983.  I had to guess at all of the titles.  The second song in their set has about 15 seconds of low radio noise under the music.

The Lloyds were one of those "shoulda" bands...they shoulda got a contract.  Strong songs, powerful singer....they just had their demo tapes (and some live cuts from the Catalyst and Old Waldorf) released in 2023.

I recommend checking out "Nothing In Return (When The Party's Over)."  That one could have been a hit!

When I originally did the Hoovers set, I had to guess at the date.  With the aid of Newspapers.com, I was able to track down the print ad for the show, which proves the date was Sunday, September 28, 1980.

KSAN switched to a country and western format just a few months later (November 15, 1980).  They had been tightening up their playlist but this tape shows they were taking chances with unknown music right up to the end.

This is a first-generation tape I received in trade from Japan.  As is often the case, the tape created a mystery.  The tape label is dated "March 28, 1989." I recognize the handwriting of my Tokyo trading partner from all those years ago (Hi, Masanori Saito!! I hope the last 34 years have been good ones!)
But you know Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï... I follow Ronald Reagan's tape trading advice: "Trust but verify. Bootlegs often have incorrect information!"  

And sure enough, my first search on the Internet found a poster for the show, listing six dates:  March 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, and 25.  (I've included a copy in the Artwork folder for your reference).

I also found Internet information indicating a Tokyo broadcast of a Lou Reed show dated March 23 with an identical set list, so I'm going with date.  It is likely the 28th is the date of the broadcast in Japan...or that it's just a mistake.

What was broadcast was not the full show from the 23rd. Reed played the entire "New York" album as his first set but the tape only eight of the fourteen "New York" songs.  I found reviews of the shows, and it's likely the second set and encores are missing songs, too.

But what's here is very good. Got that? VERY GOOD.  The tape has some obvious edits where the audience is fast-faded out.  Most likely there were commercials or deejay breaks that were removed.  So this is a very good first generation copy of what was broadcast in Japan. Until a Japanese master shows up, you're gonna want this version.  

I found no evidence of a longer U.S. broadcast.  I would have thought a show like this would have been broadcast by WNEW, but I found no trace of a broadcast. Why Japanese radio got a copy of the show and U.S. radio didn't is a mystery.

I've included some contemporary newspaper reviews of the show, and a review of the New York album.  

Rock and Roll Geography Lesson:

One of the newspaper articles is about "rock in the theater district."  

Wiki tells us, "The St. James Theatre, originally Erlanger's Theatre, is a Broadway theater at 246 West 44th Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1927, it was designed by Warren and Wetmore in a neo-Georgian style and was constructed for A. L. Erlanger. It has 1,709 seats across three levels... Both the facade and the auditorium interior are New York City landmarks."

Got that?  Warren and Wetmore!  Neo-Georgian facade!  Be ready for a pop quiz later this week...

"The theater has housed several long-running musicals in its history, including original productions of Oklahoma!, The King and I, Hello, Dolly!, The Who's Tommy, and The Producers."

The ticket prices were high for the time, $28.50 and $25.50...and the newspapers indicate that all six shows sold out.

There are several versions of this circulating on the Internet.  All of them that I found - including this one, taken from my cassette - appear to be short of the full show.  The version over at T.U.B.E. runs through "Crying Time" and is one of the most complete versions.  My tape had more of the show after "Crying Time," but had a cut off version of "Watching The Detectives" right at the start.

So I took the first three songs from the version that's up at T.U.B.E., and then added all the songs on my tape.  I got my tape from someone in Germany in 1990 or 1991, so it's low generation.  It's still not complete..."Slow Down" is cut off before the end of the song, and (supposedly) Costello repeated the song that opened the concert ("Accidents Will Happen") as his fourth and final encore.  I'm skeptical, that's a weird thing to do, especially for an artist with a large repertoire like Costello.

My tape included comments by what was listed as a "Swiss DJ."  I speak no German so I can't vouch for whether that's true.  Presumably, someone could tell from accent or vocabulary whether the announcer is Swiss, or not.
