Various – Razormaid Chapter M-16 (Feat. DAF, Prince, Psyche ) (2 x Red US 12″)

More of a European theme on this compilation. (With the inclusion of quite a few German bands) Anticipating the birth of New Beat.

Tanz Waffen are actually from Austin, Texas and obviously a favourite of Watt’s chugging guitar, bass sequences and Goth female vocals. Nathalie Archangel, another one of Watt’s official production jobs. Madonna / Cyndi Lauper styled synthpop.

For Prince fans a rare mix of the B-side of “U Got The Look”, very funky but quite squelchy!

On to a rare Freestyle track from American singer Sheilah Chambers, very retro sounding but quite catchy.

Canadian synth duo Psyche get their best synthpop / rock moves. Bubbling synths and solid drums.

An unusual closing track by David Harrow, spoken word from poet Neil Drinkwater. Very Anne Clarke.

Getting into quite a routine now! All the old tracks getting an ’87 update or edit. Art Maharg gets more of a credit being in charge of A2 , side B and “Cars”.

In fact the only remix is track 1 which gives the ’82 track an update. The rest are edits and not too different from the originals.

Didn’t know the Escape From New York track but it’s an excellent bit of Space Disco from ’83. “Cars” is extended to six and a half minutes, the source being the ‘E’ Reg Model version. A much more live sound with some added guitar.

I am going to stick my neck out and say the version of “Images of Heaven” is the best one out there. Post Punk Monk may disagree but it is a superb edit / revamp.

Various – Class X Five (Feat. Level 42, New Order, Billy Idol, Spandau Ballet et al) ( US 2 x 12″)

More crowd pleasures with a few alternative gems thrown in. The New Order track has a few unnecessary edits. Billy Idol has shades of Tiffany’s “I think we’re alone now” and then rocks out. “I feel Love” is a total re-work. Razormaid get it spot on the Spandau Ballet mix which includes the vocals and less edits.

Various – Class X Four (Feat. Depeche Mode, Fashion, OMD, Art Of Noise, Grace Jones ) (2 x US 12″)

Again another set of interesting extended edits from 1987 and Razormaid.

Not too dissimilar but different enough and in some cases an improvement, the Fashion track for instance.

From the pure disco of the Stephanie Mills track to the weirdness of Tom Tom Club. Another great compilation of tunes.

Here is an interesting article / interview about the origins of Razormaid.

Various – Class X Two (Feat. Simple Minds, Flock Of Seagulls, Our Daughters Wedding, Yazoo, The Cure, Heaven 17)

From 1987 but featuring tracks from much earlier this is packed with alternative versions,

More cowbell for the Simple Minds track which extended in the edit.

York’s The Move have their ’82 track polished up, plenty of Prog synth solo’s. Another 1982 track, love the obscure “Auto Music” , how loud are those lead synths ? Donna Summer sneaks in with a Blue Monday inspired mix of “Our Love” (but it was the other way, New Order taking notes) – the B-side of 1979’s Bad Girls. Moroder at the wheel and a bit of a synthpop gem.

Good that Razormaid manage to improve the crap original production of “The Walk”, everything is much clearer, it’s like re-master!

“Let Me Go” is an improvement, a steady instrumental build up and more of the arrangement brought out. Yazoo’s isn’t too different but thankfully not overlong !

Faithless (feat. Nina Simone) – I Want More (CD Promo)

Again from August 2004 and featuring Nina Simone and the track “Tell Me More And More And Then Some”  from 1965.

Back to the main stream Clubs with the Progressive House style on their own mixes, rattling on at a fair old pace.

Belgium duo Filterheadz go harder and deeper. Corvin Dalek gives it a bit of Berlin muscle from the longest of the tracks.

The Beginerz has a more commercial House feel.

Faithless – Mass Destruction (CD Promo and 10″)

From their 4th Album, “No Roots.”

A comeback single with an anti-war message released in August 2004 at the height of America’s search for weapons of Mass Destruction in the middle of the Iraq War. The single mix is a definite change of direction, more to the jazzy Big Beat with sampled horns.

Paul Jackson’s mixes ae quite hard, fast and progressive. Tom Middleton’s are suitably dark and cosmic with a very locked in groove over an analogue bass.

On the 10″ DJ Zinc (Benjamin Pettit) does a Drum and Bass mix which suits Maxi’s vocals. A rare version.

On the flip is a much shorter alternative to the Radio Mix by Sister Bliss and P*Nut (John Harrison) It maybe the actual Radio Mix on second thoughts.

Various – Razormaid – RM- 7 (Feat. Fou Gorki, Communards, Yello, DAF, Sparks, Depeche Mode)

More from 1986 and all Watt’s edits and remixes.

The Communards mix is quite similar to the official 12″, it’s all Bronski to me !

DAF is given a EBM-lite remix, almost New Beat. Synth horns and a strolling bass. The suggestive lyrics are typical DAF. Shame it drags on a bit.

The Yello medley (inspired by the LP , “New Mix One Go” starts with an edited version of “Bostich” mixing into “Another Excess” and then “Lost Again” , “I Love You” all done really well. “Vicious Games” is blended in with a few less obvious tracks. It finishes with “Oh Yeah” – nevermind!

“Killer Machines” was new to me and it was mislabelled with the Sparks, I’ve kept it that way! So Laser-Cowboys offer up a bit of Italo Disco via Cologne. A steady 120 BPM with some weird female vocals and inspired by Terminator but with a synth solo break and the funky overtones this could be Balearic.

The Sparks track still sparkles in its synthpop arrangement.

A weird choice of remixing the already altered “Breathing In Fumes” which has parts of “Stripped” , the Dalek voice is kept in.

Fou Gorki get another Watt remix, he was their official producer after all.

Various – Razormaid Chapter 10.5 (Feat. DAF, Kraftwerk, Was (Not Was), Run DMC, Bananarama ) ( 2 x Yellow US 12″)

Again from 1986 and another good variety of styles.

DAF have their only English sung album”1st Step To Heaven” megamixed in 2 parts.

Warren Sanford helps out on B1 and B2 with some extra scratches and overdubs.

I’d forgotten about “True Confessions”, the title track off their 3rd album. This does’t suffer much from the SAW production.

Italo Disco in the form of Kinky Go with a Bronski Beat falsetto vocal. Nice bit of synthpop.

A bit of Proto House funk on a cover of Diana Ross’s “Love Hangover” by British singer Tracy Ackerman with a synth bass to die for.
