Patrik Fitzgerald - Improve Myself 7'' (1979)

This one is quite hard to get hold of. This was Patrik's 5th 7'' single. In my humble opinion, not as excellent as the previous four he put out but that doesn't mean its not very good. Everything Patrik puts out is good!

The B sides are actually better than the A side here. The Bingo Crowd you all know and PF was once on British TV doing this number (was it Revolver or the OGWT - I can't remember?) My New Family unlike the first 2 tracks was not on any other Fitzgerald album including his very Best Of Album so that in itself makes this one well worth a download. Note, this version of Improve Myself is also different to the one of on Patrik's Very Best Of Album (Thanks for spotting that one Jerome)

Spear Of Destiny - Radio Radio 7'' (1988)

Another S.O.D. single this time from '88. NOT the Elvis Costello song of the same name.

In case you haven't noticed, posts have slowed down a bit on here and will continue to do so. The simple truth is 1) I am not motivated at the moment and 2) I'm running out of vinyl to rip! Reason One is the main one though. I really can't be arsed. The weather is too good,I am too tired and theres lots of other things I can and should be getting on with. I will TRY to post at least one item of sorts a day but I promise nothing. Longy is suffering from Bloggers Block!

The Lurkers - This Dirty Town 7'' (1982)

When the Lurkers first reformed back in 1982 without Howard Wall on vocals I was sceptical but Mark Fincham was an admirable deputy. This was their first single in their "new" incarnation on the Clay Label with Pete Stride,Esso and Nigel Moore remaining in the band.

Stamford Bridge - Chelsea (1970)

And now for a long lost classic from 1970 from the aptly named Stamford Bridge. I'm not quite sure why I love this one so much but I do : - ) Be honest,I really spoil you lot sometimes! The B side is shite unfortunately, unlike Ossie who was my hero as a kid.

The Teardrops - Vinyl Final LP (1980)

Just last week here on Punk Friction we had a very special guest non other than Trevor Wain the singer from The Teardrops (see comments on the other Teardrops post) Well I mentioned to him I was eyeing this one up on ebay and I made an offer for 7 quid which to my surprise was accepted. So I went the whole hog and also brought the In And Out Fashion 12'' too while I was at it. I'll post that next week if anyone wants it.

This is a pretty experimental LP in my opinion but I have always liked it. I'm hoping our man returns to Punk Friction to give us more information and perhaps one of the silent majority on here or a regular commenter might have a question for Trevor too.

Tracks

1) Everythings O.K.
2) No One Is Innocent

Sperm Wails - The Golden Age Of The Carry On 7'' (1988)

This one came with a special Carry On 7'' fanzine. Sounds like they were fans of Carry On films. Not my cup of tea those films I must admit but the single is good and thats all that counts.

The Cure - Primary 7'' (1981)

You'd just as well have Primary too. Another good one from Robert Smith & crew from a couple of years later. The B side here is just a "dreary" instrumental - not much kop at all in my opinion.

Tracks

1) Primary
2) Side Descent

The Cure - Jumping Someone Else's Train 7'' (1979)

One of my favourite Cure singles alongside Killing An Arab. The much underated Jumping Someone Else's Train from 1979. The B side is more crackly than the A for some reason - I can't think why as I can hardly remember playing it that much.

Tracks

1) Jumping Someone Else's Train
2) I'm Cold

John Cooper Clarke - Post-War Glamour Girl 7'' (1978)

John Cooper Clarke is a legend. Clever, witty, original and brilliant. I only ever saw JJC the once back in the early 80's at the Elephant Fayre festival supporting Siouxsie. I've never laughed so much at a gig in my life. To be honest I'm not sure if it was JJC or the acid I was on at the time (probably the mixture of both!)

The Damned - Thanks For The Night 12'' Shaped Picture Disc (1984)

Theres only 1000 of these rarities in this format which comes a rather nice shaply picture disc complete with plinth. Another one that looks funny on the turntable - I keep thinking she's gonna get her head chopped off!
Tracks

1) Thanks For The Night
2) Nasty

Jimmy Pursey - Alien Orphan 7'' promo (1982)

Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the water - another Jimmy Pursey single turns up from nowhere. Alien Orphan is of course from the album of the same name but the B side is not on any album. This one hasn't got a picture cover and I don't know if one exists or not.

Sham 69 - Uptown 12'' (1992)

A bit of a strange one this starting with the cover! I have no idea why Borstal Breakout is on it with a strange "from London" introduction either. Hey but who cares. Not many bands have got the stick Sham have over the years but they are one of the bands I love. Just heard they are playing down here later in the year too so I'm one happy Longy today!

David Johansen - Heard The News 7'' (1985)

The Teenage Filmstars - (There's A) Cloud Over Liverpool 7'' (1979)

I must confess I love all the Television Personalities stuff and all their side projects and the Teenage Filmstars were one of them. It seems like a decent time to upload this particular single.

This ones dedicated to Rafa Benitez,Steven Gerrard,Fernando Torres, the red half of Scouseland as well as the whole of Norway. Your lads took one hell of a beating tonight : - )

S*M*A*S*H* - A*L*L*Y*C freebie 7'' (1994)

This 7'' came free with S*M*A*S*H's debut album Self Abused and the A side is also on re-issued CD versions of the album. The B side isn't but as it says on the label, its S*H*I*T*E.

Still if you liked the version of A*L*L*Y*C on the S*M*A*S*H 12'' also posted here then you might like this acoustic version. I certainly think its just as good if not better.

Anhrefn - Bwtleg Powerhaus Llundain 1.3.1990 12'' EP (1990)

A great 6 track live 12'' EP by these Welsh Punksters. I brought this one on ebay for 99p a while back. What a bargain! When it came to ripping a live ep I've never heard by a Welsh speaking band,I thought I was going to have problems splitting the tracks but for some reason it all went swimmingly well (for a change!) This one doesn't come with a picture sleeve I'm afraid but the quality of the music makes up for such a disappointment.

Eddie & The Hot Rods - I Might Be Lying 7'' (1977)

One of those singles which alot of people overlooked in '77 due to the vast amount of great stuff that was coming out on a daily basis at the time. Nothing special but too good to be overlooked completely. Personally I think the B side is better.

The Soft Boys - Give It To The Soft Boys 7'' (1977)

I haven't got a cover for this one either so again I "borrowed" it from Mr www. If your one of those people that don't really dig the Soft Boys then I understand as I don't either to be truthful. The reason - well I heard the first track on here and thought they would all be as great but unfortunately it was a one off. But what a one off! Wading Through A Ventilator is a true UK 1977 punk rock classic and if for some reason you haven't heard it then I'm jealous at what you are about to experience. Why Wading Through A Ventilator wasn't on the Raw Records Punk Singles Collection CD is a mystery to me. You can even sing along to this one too. They don't this one at my local pub's karaoke night. Shame.

Wading Through A Ventilator

I fix my fish
I fool my frog
I fray my feet, I drag my dog, I drop my duck
Across the wall
I squash my giblets like my grub
I battle adders in a pub

My girl is ripe
In greasy silk
A split tomato in her mind
The crumpled heart
Sags in the sea
Tomato heart escaping gas
I think that girl is of her skin

Of all the people that I know
The ones I like I love the best
The fishes in the sewer pipes
The highwaymen in yellow stripes
It might not now, but it will be later
Wading through your ventilator

I tang my fag
He clenched his fist
The pretty bonny licks my stamp and twists her fang
She tugs his foot
We think of better things and laugh
The hairs on my marshmallow pout

My head is rich
Enough to burst
With ivy strung around my calf, picture the flies
On melon halves
You wind up living somewhere cheap
But dying upon a compost heap

Of all the people I don't know
The ones I do I hate the most
The twisted fodder of mankind's
Enough to drive a poor boy blind
It might not now, but it could be later
Wading through your ventilator

I waded in and that's a fact
The meat was cut, the meat was packed
You shredded me with icy strings
As coiled salami, I was led
Into a holy stacking shed
My life like antiseptic stings

A tongue of stalk
And tender leaves
Eventually your skull occludes, the melon splits
And like an egg
It dribbles down your inside leg
Don't get me wrong, I'm quite OK

I drank a cat
I sprung a cake
She threw transistors in my lake, I threw her head
Far through the door
You wonder what I do that for
They wonder what you think I've got

(Shut it down shut it down)
Listen baby, there ain't nothing in here but my own sweet mind (Shut it down shut it down)
If it bothers you, you can turn it off (Shut it down shut it down)
With my antelope cheek and my raven's eye (Shut it down)
And my buffalo heart and a crocodile's hide

And my salmon head wedged on a moose's neck
A breathing fungus on a hemorraged lawn
Invented me one summer's morn
I've lost you now, but I'll get you later
Wading through your ventilator

Boomtown Rats - Like Clockwork 7'' (1978)

Some more from Mr Geldof's Boomtown Rats. This was their 4th single and it reached the heady heights of number 6 in the UK chart back in 1978. My single is not only crackly but it also didn't come with a picture cover so I've borrowed the art off the net.

Athletico Spizz 80 - No Room 7'' (1980)

When I think of anything Spizz I think of one word "underated" I love this single and the epic B side (despite the crackles)

And now for the big question. Under what moniker did Spizz make their best music?

1) Spizzoil
2) Spizzenergi

The Damned - Something Weird (Bootleg) 7'' (Year = Unknown)

I've got no idea what year this one came out. This is a bootleg single (live recordings) and it certainly sounds like it too. The first 2 tracks on side 1 are extremely rough but L.A. Woman on the B side is quite listenable. Theres no information about where this was recorded just a plain blank label and extremely thick vinyl. A limited edition of just 200.

Tracks

Fulham Furies - These Boots Are Made For Walking 7'' (2000)

This was originally released in 1978 and original copys of this go for silly money - anywhere from between £35-50 quid.
However in the year 2000 around 500 were repressed as a bootleg 7''and due to my online friend Mr E Bay,you can now get these at a bargain £3.49. There were 8 left the last time I looked. This repress is exactly the same as the original except the date on the label and also some colouring on label. Like the original, it never came with a picture cover.

In case you didn't know Fulham Furies were actually UK Punk band The Crabs. Rumour has it that the then Crabs Manager was an avid Fulham FC fan and the Fulham team actually sing on this record. Yuk,I want my money back!

Vibe Tribe - Skylark Boogie/Conscious As A Daisy 7'' (1987)

This is a re-up of the pissed up version that was already on here but this one ain't wonky like the previous effort. I managed to gazzump 3 other bidders on ebay with just 12 seconds to go and bag this item for a bargain £4.09p eariler in the week. If you are one of those 3 other bidders, from the bottom of heart.....I really couldn't give a flying fuck! You would of done it to me.

Anyway, Vibe Tribe as you would probably already know were in fact The Cult Maniax before they changed their name and released this solitary double A side single.

Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Sweet Gene Vincent 7'' (1977)

The late Ian Dury was a true legend. Contraversal,funny,anti-establishment and an inspiration to many thousands of people. Even in the months leading up to his impending death in 2000,he never lost his humour. A great great character. Much loved and sadly missed.

The B side of this is actually Ian Dury & The Kilburns not the Blockheads.

Generation X - Fridays Angels 7'' (1979)

The 6th single from Generation X. This came in red vinyl and compared to their previous 5 singles wasn't as good in my most humble one. I definately prefer the B sides here especially Trying For Kicks. No doubt about it though,in their prime Generation X were a great band and top musicians.
