Sad News......
To all our loyal customers, friends, followers and fans. Café Irie will be closing its doors come November 2014.
The reason for this, the building that we lease is earmarked for development by its landlords, in the near future. Something that has always been on the cards and sometimes the show just ‘cannot” go on.
Café Irie has been in the former fisherman’s cottage at 38, Fore Street, Newquay, since 2003. Proudly embracing Coffee Culture, a DIY festival ethic and bringing it to Newquay’s very heart. Café Irie was producing homemade and organic, way back before it was mainstream and before we cut off our dreadlocks!
Growing organically, never wanting to advertise, embrace commercialism or join the mainstream. Merely letting word of mouth and the quality of our products do the talking and promotion for us.
It has not just been about food and drink at Café Irie. Having played an active part in the New quay/Cornish music scene, holding regular events and showcasing up and coming musicians coming to Cornwall.
George Ezra, Emily and the Woods, Rae Morris, Bo Young, PJB band, Lily and Meg, The Loose Salute, Ruarri Joseph, Matthew and Me and Neil Halstead have all passed through and graced its intimate upstairs space.
We have been the location for many birthday parties, christenings and wedding receptions. Our staff over the years have come from every corner of the globe and remained great friends.
The arts have also featured heavily in the Café Iries 11 years. A regular fixture for Newquays Art8 festival, hosted one man plays and comedy nights. Worked with the Tate Gallery and played host to Simon Armitage when he was walking the SW coast path as part of his poetry walks. Did we mention that there’s also an upstairs bi-monthly art exhibition that has given space to many incredibly creative artists works over the years?
Phew! And you thought that we just did food and drinks?
The future is certainly not all doom and gloom as Gary and Jon are looking forward to future challenges and spending time doing the things they love.
Please watch this space for a date as to our final closing party where we can have a drink together, celebrate the good times and thank each and everyone of you who has ever been to our quirky little venue.
