When Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of German physicists Max von Laue (1914) and James Franck (1925) in aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from confiscating them. The German government had prohibited Germans from accepting or keeping any Nobel Prize after jailed peace activist Carl von Ossietzky had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935.

De Hevesy placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. It was subsequently ignored by the Nazis who thought the jar—one of perhaps hundreds on the shelving—contained common chemicals. After the war, de Hevesy returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The gold was returned to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Foundation. They re-cast the medals and again presented them to Laue and Franck.[12]

‘Like Waze, but for toilets’: The start-up hoping to solve Paris’s public urination problem

Public urination is high on the list of critiques of the French capital, along with rats, noise, and people not picking up their dogs’ business. Referred to in France as le pipi sauvage, or “wild peeing”, the propensity for public urination – which is technically illegal and mainly male – is explained by many factors, though a lack of available public toilets is a fundamental one.

Over the years, Parisian leaders have proposed a number of innovative solutions but, so far, to no avail.

The newest scheme to combat the ongoing problem comes from a start-up from the western city of Nantes called Urban Services.

ICI Toilettes (“Toilets HERE”) has two main functions. First, it is a geolocation application that helps users locate public toilets and allows them to update the status of the facility if it is in disrepair. This helps members of the public find the closest functional bathroom in real time and keeps local authorities informed about the state of the city’s sanitation infrastructure.

As part of a larger strategy, the response from the public has been “extremely positive”, says Di Gallo, adding that it makes the city more inclusive by meeting the needs of “women, the elderly and disabled people”, who have described the difficulties they encounter when out in public with no access to facilities.

“Of course, we also hope that those who degrade our public spaces will now be more inclined to use a toilet,” Di Gallo says.

In his new role overseeing Target’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual marketing, Thompson says he plans to “flip the script and rewrite the narrative of CPG [consumer packaged goods] retail industries to better serve all segments and thoughtfully & authentically cater to *ALL guests, ALL humans & ALL hearts* who enter our stores and across the nation.”

LOS ANGELES – Police in Los Angeles are asking for the public’s help in finding Dashawn Dow, a 20-year-old resident of Los Angeles, suspected in a series of violent follow-home robberies.

According to the LAPD, on October 2, 2023, around 1:30 p.m., surveillance footage captured a grey Maserati tailing a male and female victim into the parking structure of their North Hollywood apartment complex. Confronted by two armed suspects upon exiting their vehicle, the victims, fearing for their lives, complied with the demands, resulting in the loss of money and jewelry.

Another incident occurred on October 10, 2023, around 12:10 a.m., in the parking structure of a North Hollywood apartment complex. A male and female victim were accosted by two male suspects. One suspect forcibly tried to take the victim’s watch, and when resisted, the other suspect brandished a gun against the victim’s chest. Fearing for his life, the victim surrendered his belongings, and the suspects fled to a waiting getaway vehicle. Detectives believe Dow was involved in both incidents and used a firearm. [… or something similar brandished against the victim’s chest.]

Dow, arrested five times for robbery in the past 18 months, managed to post bond after each arrest. He is identified in two other follow-home style robberies in downtown Los Angeles and is a person of interest in additional criminal investigations. Dow is currently at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.
