I live in an upper high cost of living area, so I can’t tell if the contractors are used to more wealthy people or if they are just taking me for a ride.
Two quotes for installing two external windows are running about 10k just for the windows and install labor — doesn’t include architect fees, permits, drywall and painting afterwards, etc etc. admittedly one is a bigger 48x48 window but still very surprised. Tried to get more quotes but two other companies basically refused to give me a quote for it and quoted me 30-40k to do that and replace a bunch of other windows.
Are new install windows really that expensive? I was expecting the project to be 5k maybe, not 10k.. am I just completely off?
Hi all, had a long 1 year process of completing renovating my kitchen and bathroom and the last 3 months the contractor has made no effort to send people to finish the job and at this point I have spent a lot of time trying to chance them down to complete the project.
Additionally in the contract they warranty their work for 2 years and have noticed that they did a poor job at installing garbage disposal as I found a decent leak after no telling how long that has completely warped and wages through the bottom of the new cabinets
I guess my two questions are since the contract doesn’t specify end date could they randomly try to comeback and complete ptheir work months from now??
And is it even work trying to reach out and get them to fix their existing work as they have pretty much ghosted me
EDIT: There was no bad blood or altercation that happened they just stopped showing up and kept saying someone would be out and no one would show.
Hired a contractor (to finish a large basement) with great references and highly recommended by a friend. He had been great in terms of project management, attention to the project, organization, design know how, etc. we’re about 40% of the way through the project but 70% of the money paid due mostly to advancing materials purchases.
A couple weeks ago, his main two workers were picking up their stuff to leave (we came to be friendly with them over the past 6 weeks) and they confided with us that the contractor hasn’t paid them in 3-4 weeks and said he had no money. Contractor is avoiding them, etc and they haven’t worked on site in about 10 days.
The contractor doesn’t know that we know and is still operating as usual and plans to come see us Monday to give us updates, etc. I’d like to be Frank with the guy and ask what’s going on. If we see that he’s being evasive and does not provide a commitment or act of keeping things moving by paying the sub or show us tangible proof of materials purchases, I’m tempted to rip up our contract and ask for unused moneys.
If the contractor continues to avoid and ghosts us, I know my state’s attorney general’s office has an office dedicated home improvement consumer protection and we’ve used them successfully before against a builder. Is that the best path to recoup our money?
Contractor is licensed/bonded.
