Namecoin is a blockchain that acts as a decentralized alternative to the DNS and public TLS CA's, which resists censorship, hijacking, and MITM attacks. Namecoin uses the .bit top-level domain. .bit domains are "special-use" (not part of the DNS; similar to .onion); hence, to resolve .bit domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin blockchain (a full node such as Namecoin Core) or a lightweight SPV client (such as Electrum-NMC or ConsensusJ-Namecoin).

Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

Bitmessage is a P2P communications protocol used to send encrypted messages to another person or to many subscribers. It is decentralized and trustless, meaning that you need-not inherently trust any entities like root certificate authorities. It also aims to hide "non-content" data, like the sender and receiver of messages, from eavesdroppers. If Bitmessage is completely new to you, you may wish to start by reading the [whitepaper](http://bitmessage.org/bitmessage.pdf).

Namecoin was the first major altcoin (Initial release 18 April 2011, compared to Litecoin's Initial release 7ย?October 2011)

Most of its source code is composed of Bitcoin's source code. Its mining algorithm, balances, and issuance are being secured through SHA256, proof-of-work scheme

Just like bitcoin, its supply is limited to 21 million coins.

The main use case of this coin is to register .bit - top-level domains, Independent from (ICANN) organization and Domain Name System (DNS), and make Decentralized TLS (HTTPS) certificate validations, backed by blockchain consensus

It originates from a discussion started in September 2010, in the BitcoinTalk forum about a hypothetical system called BitDNS and generalizing bitcoin.

Gavin Andresen and Satoshi Nakamoto joined the discussion in the BitcoinTalk forum and supported the idea of BitDNS, and a reward for implementing BitDNS was announced on the forum in December 2010

It was also mentioned in the 2015 book called Mastering Bitcoin: Unlocking Digital Cryptocurrencies by Andreas M. Antonopoulos , and given 2 pages of it

The Github repository is regularly updated and being kept alive https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin-core

Somehow project came to a halt and by that I mean It fell out of popularity (Not that many parties use its services), the price and volume seems to be low

Picture 1 the price (About 1.54 $ per coin at the moment)

Picture 2 Trading Volume

https://i.redd.it/drvn0ri71k381.jpg

You could see that as of December 4, 2021, It barely reaches 22 000 $ .

Picture 3

The market capitalization is 22 mil. $ at the moment

The question is, How did this happen? What are the reasons that Namecoin came to the state of this?

Namecoin Was The First Altcoin To Be Created, The First Blockchain After Bitcoin But What Is Its State Now?

Altcoins are something normal now and a dozen of them appear every day, some in the form of tokens, being only a contracts, others in the form of separated blockchains. But the first one to do it was Namecoin and it was the first cryptocurrency to appear after the creation of Bitcoin.

Namecoin is a naming system based on Bitcoin, domains can be bought and they will be attached to coins, every name is unique and has an expiration date that has to be renewed for the owner to maintain ownership. If the rules are not followed the transactions are rejected when the blocks are being validated. This was made to decentralized Domain Names (DNS) that are owned by big corporations, the domains are all .bit domains.

Namecoin was created in 2011 and the interesting thing is to see how the first ever altcoin is doing after so many time has passed.

The .bit domain has not been used a lot and the creator abandonned the project, leaving the development of the project to its community. Namecoin now is barely spoken and the project seems like dust in the wind. But what are the numbers of this coin? Lets take a look.

Namecoin has a maximum supply of 21 million coins like Bitcoin and is trading righ now at 1.37$. The all time high of this coin is 13.11$, achieved at the end of 2013.

The problem with this coin is its volume, it has a volume of 7800$ in the last 24h hours, it's really low and can be hard to trade it sometimes. Right now the only reputable exchange that trades Namecoin is Coinex and it's responsible for almost all the volume of Namecoin. This volume may come from miners who are capable of dual mining Bitcoin + Namecoin.

The technology behind it is still there but the market has moved on and Namecoin, the first ever altcoin, seems to be forgotten and seems to be only part of the history of cryptocurrencies. Now there are many decentralized domain services like ENS, but it was Namecoin that started it all.

I know this belongs in r/namecoin, but there isn't a lot of activity there, and I'm curious what they could do with this, as its all about a blockchain hopefully someone here can help me understand this a little better. Thanks in advance for anything I learn of this, it's fascinating to me.

Ghash.io has 54.4% nmc hashpower.
