Answer:

  1. He had announced that he would stick with The Witcher if they remained faithful to the lore. From the get go, the screenwriters stated methodology suggested that they were not dead set on being as faithful as possible to the original material. They also publicly confirmed that they were planning to make the content more diverse and inclusive. By series 3, Cavill delivered as promised and bowed out.

  2. He made a cameo as Superman at the end of the Black Adam movie, which hinted at a new Superman movie. But there was a change of Directors at DC and the new ones felt that the whole DCverse was not worth saving and needed a reboot. So no Cavill.

  3. He manage to secure the rights and funding to adapt the Warhammer IP, and with him being a geek you can trust that he will try to pay justice to the original material.

[–]Zonerdrone 1774 points1775 points  (134 children)

Cavill as Superman is kind of the only thing that really worked in the DCU.

[–]way2lazy2care 286 points287 points  (22 children)

Tbh he's the only person I would have kept from the original justice league. That said if you're trying to start over it'd be hard with him as he's now almost 40 and would probably have a more difficult time maintaining SuperMan-ness through a whole new set of DCU movies unless they killed superman at the end of phase 1. They need someone to hang 2-3 phases on.

[–]chainmailbill 128 points129 points  (2 children)

Oh man I’d love to go back to a simpler time where there weren’t “phases”

[–]Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks 23 points24 points  (6 children)

Tbh he's the only person I would have kept from the original justice league

Can you believe they're keeping Ezra Miller of all people?

[–]Internationalizard 42 points43 points  (5 children)

Or they could just jump to Batman Beyond and age him up. Then work backwards from that

[–]jakeofheart 132 points133 points  (33 children)

Who knows, maybe that freed him for the next Bond movie.

Henri Cavill is a man’s man: women want to be with him, men want to be him… or could perfectly settle for being one of his buddies.

[–]sk9592 54 points55 points  (7 children)

Basically no one watched Man from UNCLE, but it was a really fun movie and the perfect audition for a Henry Cavill version of Bond.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

He made a pretty decent villain in the mission impossible movies as well.

[–]Imperium_Dragon 29 points30 points  (2 children)

After watching the man from uncle, he’d be a pretty good Bond.

[–]ElectronicImage9 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Criminally underrated movie

[–]Imperium_Dragon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A shame it never got a sequel

[–]Danishroyalty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. Except he hadn't played the character in 5 years and the entire universe was a mess during that time. Bringing Cavill back would be like placing a band aid on a bullet wound. I'm sure we would have gotten a good Superman movie and then another 5 years of nothing (through no fault of Cavills). While I would have appreciated some closure to his character before rebooting, I 100% prefer a reboot over another decade of Superman will they/won't they.

[–]Arashmickey 68 points69 points  (4 children)

A geek and apparently a huge fan of WH40K.

I think highlander was looking for someone who can make a long-term commitment in case their thing takes off, and mr. Cavill is going to be busy elevating the Imperium to ever greater glories.

[–]thebestspeler 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Let’s be honest, Highlander is doa. There can only be one, and it was the original and even then critics didn’t like it

[–]CaptainMagnets 55 points56 points  (12 children)

I'm pretty pumped about the Warhammer deal tbh

[–]ThatCrossDresser 49 points50 points  (14 children)

Wasn't there also a list of grievances from The Witcher writers and producers, accusing him of a bunch of stuff? If memory serves me it was all either weird surface level complaints (He looked at me bad) mixed with stuff that is easily proven wrong?

[–]newpotatocab0ose 64 points65 points  (1 child)

Yes, that’s my understanding. I can’t link any sources but the little bit of digging I did when that came out seemed to heavily favor Cavill.

It seemed like it was actually pretty dirty tactics from a couple Witcher staff members trying to drag him down, and that much was easily countered and disproven by others who worked there or were familiar with the situation.

[–]smashmag 412 points413 points  (73 children)

Answer: The Witcher and Superman thing seems to have been a miscommunication of some sort. Cavill quit The Witcher when they were going to make a new Superman movie - he would have had to be available bc of his contract with DC. But then it turns out they are going to make it a prequel with a younger Superman and Cavill is in like his late 30s. (Not sure what’s the deal with the Highlander thing though.) https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/henry-cavill-the-witcher-return-not-happening-superman-exit-1235462635

[–]SandwichesTheIguana 200 points201 points  (34 children)

It isn't a prequel, but a reboot.

If you've seen Man of Steel, there isn't anything to "prequel." It covers his childhood through becoming Superman and then moving to Metropolis.

[–]smashmag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reboot, okay thanks, it’s been awhile. Was relaying what I heard about this on the “Who Weekly” celebrity news podcast

[–]iamricardosousa 133 points134 points  (21 children)

Cavill quit The Witcher when they were going to make a new Superman movie

This is not the unique reason for him to drop "The Witcher". He wasn't happy with the way the source material was being used and was vocal about it several times. The Superman role might have been the ultimate trigger, but it wasn't guaranteed he would continue with the Witcher even if Superman wasn't a thing. He also announced the Warhammer 40K series and that probably means agenda conflicts with other projects.

[–]mr_math24 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Answer: GiantFreakinRobot is notorious for making shit up and is banned on most leak subs.

[–]fart3mis_growl 39 points40 points  (1 child)

Answer: I don't think he's having any bad luck. He wasn't dropped from Witcher. He himself decided not to do it anymore. Sure, he was dropped as Superman but so is the maximum roster of DC actors as James Gunn wants fresh blood in his vision. Also since he's producing and starring in Warhammer it is a huge commitment. I don't know how true this news is of Chris Hemsworth replacing him but Chris doesn't have any such commitments lined up so it makes sense.

[–]ElvenArcherV 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Question: does anybody think a Highlander reboot is a good idea? That movie is lightning-in-a-bottle, ridiculous 80s schlock. Doesn't matter who's the lead, it will be awful.

[–]AsherTheFrost 62 points63 points  (3 children)

Answer: Henry left the Witcher due to creative differences, as he wanted to stick close to the source material, and it seems a lot of the writers don't feel the same way.

https://redanianintelligence.com/2022/11/01/henry-cavills-departure-from-witcher-originated-in-s2/

Then with Superman, DC decided at the 11th hour to scrap the way they were setting up their movie universe, and have decided to go with a much younger Superman story, probably closer to a year 1 thing.

https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/superman-james-gunn-henry-cavill

Highlander appears to be a schedule conflict with the Warhammer 40k movie and Amazon series he's starring in and producing, which is something of a dream project for him, as he's a long time fan of the Warhammer franchise.

https://deadline.com/2022/12/henry-cavill-star-warhammer-40000-film-tv-franchise-amazon-studios-1235200833/

Seriously, looks to be a massive project, so we may not see him in much else for a bit.

[–]dred_pirate_redbeard 165 points166 points  (119 children)

Answer: It's because it's an open secret in the industry that he and his team are notoriously hard to work with. Dude's had a chip on his shoulder ever since he got passed over for Bond back when Daniel Craig eventually got the role.

Do you folks know who his representation is? It's Dwayne Johnson's ex-wife, Dany Garcia, who is still a producing partner with The Rock. They're the ones who took the bizarre approach to the whole Black Adam experiment where they made a movie that served the actor instead of the franchise, had it blow up in their face and then they insisted on a revisionist version of history to claim it was a success. It's a really odd, and frankly wrestling inspired, approach to business that just doesn't work outside the WWE. She may have been fired but Cavill's professional reputation stands.

These are the kind of people managing Henry Cavill. I don't know much about The Witcher outside the game, but my understanding is the crew felt the same way about him on that production. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like he has the franchises best interest at heart, but at the end of the day, he's not a writer or a producer, he's an actor, a hired gun there to do a job.

Being hard to work with is a death knell in the industry. He may have a great public-facing persona, but that doesn't at all extend to his professional persona.

I like Cavill btw, and his love for sticking to source material. This is just what I've heard from industry adjacent folks.

Run of bad luck?? I know I'll get downvoted, but this thread has been going on six hours now and I haven't seen a single person post the real answer.

Edit: This isn't the kind of thing you'll find in published articles (outside of a gossip rag). Do any of you know someone who completed film school? Talk to them and see if they'll hit up their industry connects to see what they'll say - that's how you get this kind of info.

Edit2: Yes Reddit, I'm sure the guy who couldn't even bother to make a five second cameo in Shazam! is suuuuuuper easy to work with. /s

[–]jcdoe 45 points46 points  (6 children)

This is probably the answer.

The problem is Reddit likes him. What’s not to like? He’s a gamer who plays nerdy roles and he’s buff so we can imagine being him. I like him.

But I don’t have to work with him. Could you imagine working with an actor who keeps telling the writing team they aren’t “faithful to Witcher lore?”

[–]Pairadockcickle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lot more than probable.

A surface level search brings up a loooot of corroborating opinions that match precisely.

I think there’s a lot of people that really don’t understand the celeb persona thing, and just fundamentally can’t see that it’s entirely fake in most cases. Not necessarily a bad thing, I wouldn’t want the real me in the public eye either.

[–]dred_pirate_redbeard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Reddit is incredibly naive to the realities of Hollywood.

The man wasn't even an executive producer! He was talent, that's all. I'm sure I would've liked his version better but I'm glad I've never had to work with him.

[–]schmoopycat 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Insane how Redditors are so far up their own nerd ass that they think he’s “having bad luck” and his lack of success isn’t self inflicted

[–]dred_pirate_redbeard 9 points10 points  (1 child)

You know what a healthy exercise is? Once a year, talk about something on Reddit that you're actually an expert on. See the qualities of the replies and the trend of upvotes and you'll realize that generally, the Reddit hive mind doesn't know shit.

[–]marblerye69 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This is the answer.

[–]dred_pirate_redbeard 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Not the one reddit likes, apparently.

[–]marblerye69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. The Reddit hard on for Cavill is too powerful

[–]Existing_Party9104 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yeah I was amazed to see no one commenting on his ridiculous behavior reported on The Witcher. That would have been my first guess at why he’s having a hard time getting roles. There were a ton of articles written on it from what I can find just googling “Henry Cavill The Witcher controversy”

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I’m with you on this one. There’s too much of a rough pattern here of things ending or not panning out to not at least consider this as the possibility. These things aren’t always directly discussed in a consumer-facing manner, it can often be dealt with within the industry, as you said.

Edit: Cavill was so damn hot in MI: Fallout.

[–]BroadswordEpic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Answer: He's working on a Warhammer series for Amazon Prime.
