[Book Club] "Milk Fed" by Melissa Broder: Week 1, Chapters 1 - 16 by XBreaksYFocusGroup in books

Yeah, that is fair. Was talking with my partner about it and how strongly it brings to mind books like First Bad Man and My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness. It is the sort of book which is so intimate in its articulation of neurosis, I cannot help but feel a large amount must draw from experience.

Miscommunication. Trying to reschedule for as soon as possible. Apologies.

I think that is a hotly contested interpretation. It does seem to suggest Rob may be Jack; however, I think it unlikely for many reasons, one of which being that Jack would not stand to gain anything from impersonating Rob and it would open up a massive can of unreliable narrator worms. My personal take on it may be that Rob doses herself with drugs to suppress darker inclinations as Jack used to do and the contacts are meant to hide dilation. Which feeds well into the theme of "no click, just coping and insistence on nurture" that has weaved through the book.

Miscommunication error in setting things up. Should likely be rescheduled for some time this same week. Sincere apologies for the confusion.

Can't get through "The Sellout" by GyrosSnazzyJazzBand in books

In my opinion, part of the charm of the book is that it centers a sort of post-neoliberal approach to racism which you do not often see in fiction (and even less so in comedy). It critically examines a lot of classically racist institutional elements as needing to be revisited in a contemporary light as part of healing and contending with our history. Like essentially enslaving Harmony who has been so messed up by stereotyping and being exploited for television that is causes him pain to operate otherwise or re-segregating schools so that institutional biases are able to be better addressed.

Oh, yes. The top photo was taken on a table in an enclosed patio. Natural light. Bottom was taken indoor with soft, warm light. The top is more true to the color. Grey, slightly blue-ish.

Thank you for the kind words! They are my everyday use shoes so they get a ton of use (and no popped seams yet). The holes were actually precipitated by a river hike.

Nope! I wish I were so talented but it is not quilt. Just a scrap of a screen print fabric I picked up when I lived in Madagascar and have been holding on to for way too long.

It is common for there to be differences in page count between translations and while that is definitely on the larger side, I imagine it is fine and you are both reading the intended versions. Sometimes it is subtleties of language, sometimes it is liberties taken by different translators, and sometimes it is just variations in printing elements such as page size, font, spacing, etc.

Sadly, no. Quirk of the code. Nor will it likely exist in what is to come after New Reddit. It currently is just a solid object just brings you back to the main sub navigation upon click.

Why does reading feel different then any other hobby i have? by suggestmemedia in books

[–]XBreaksYFocusGroup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Has my brain rotten from too much fast media etc., or is there something else going on.

Very probably, yes. Though not "rotten" so much as your attention span currently shorted. Books have a significantly slower investment curve than other media and do not provide that immediate endorphin drip that the novelty of social media provides nor the swift hook of music and movies. I realized that something similar happened to me several years ago when my eyes would stray before completing a single page. But fortunately, it is something you can likely reclaim relatively easily. Keep your phone in another room while you read, explore audiobooks (or read along with an audiobook), set a schedule, persist, etc. It also helps to read along with a club or a friend as a social component introduces another avenue of reward in your circuitry and keeps you committed.

Idle musing here, but we probably also tend to have better expectations about other forms of media than with literature. Movies and television and games have trailers or trusted studios, friends can have tastes that are familiar and known to us, and genres can perhaps tell us readily what sort of enjoyment may be found in each. Even though, say, a science fiction novel can have similar setting and themes, it might be a character study, a mystery, an anti-capitalist thesis, philosophy, etc, which is not as readily apparent while you are in early chapters. While (especially combined with trailers or promotional material,) we tend to know to be titillated by explosions in action flicks, humor in comedy, twitch reflex feedback loops in FPS's, etc, etc. We also speak about books on a longer timespan. I can tell you I liked reading Beowulf in high school but for all I know, I would hate it now. But you are more likely to be recommended music or television people have consumed recently and can speak more concurrently towards.

If you view the sub in old.reddit, the banner becomes an interactable marquee where clicking on a book will take you to the comment of the person who is reading it!
