I really love our democracy. I love all of our different parties. And I wouldn't mind a seventh party to get into the mix.
However, it really takes a lot to get your foot in the door. And many parties implode, over continuous triennial failures. Furthermore, when MP's jump waka to a brand new party, that said party (history has shown) hardly lasts.
All current six parties have a history that New Zealanders are familiar with. To establish a seventh, they'll have to do a lot of work to teach Kiwis who they are.
Dotcom's Internet Party simply came with money, controversy and Laile Harre and Hone Harawira, but no dice. Jim Anderton jumped waka a few times through history, successfully, simply through his already established political persona. United Future was solely dependent on Peter Dunne and once Peter lost his seat, they were no more - which is unfortunate, because United Future could've been the Seventh.
But then Gareth Morgan came along with the potential for the truest Seventh party - TOP.
Unfortunately, I don't know how long they could last. Thoughts?
