“You’re born, you take shit, get out in the world, you take more shit, climb a little higher, take less shit.

‘Till one day you're in the rarefied atmosphere and you’ve forgotten what shit even looks like.

Welcome to the layer cake, son.“

This is my favorite British gangster film

[–]South5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was the first sentence i thought of when i read the title!!

[–]FuzzyFuzzNuts 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My love of that movie is almost a family joke. RIP Gambon

[–]sicariobrothers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Layer Cake is one of the best films with worst titles ever. Shawshank Redemption is tied with it.

[–]crankery 355 points356 points  (12 children)

I know he's known by most for Dumbledore but I will always remember him for Gambon Corner.

[–]mooseninaboxen 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Was looking for this to make sure I wasn’t the only one, ty. RIP

[–]Losmpa 33 points34 points  (3 children)

“…and he’s off the racing line coming ‘round Gambon…”.

[–]reflUX_cAtalyst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

beat me to it.

[–]waterboy1321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved him as Mr. Bean in Fantastic Mr Fox, too.

[–]beatmaster808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I don't know...I don't like it"

[–]johnsgrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The singing detective was fabulous

[–]Dt2_0 93 points94 points  (3 children)

And... across the line.

[–]lpcustomvs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That lap was legendary indeed.

[–]HereForTheFood4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gabon corner!

[–]RighteousSkimpMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WOW, this brought back so many memories. Oh man, nostalgia trip incoming!!!! Thanks !!

[–]cybelesdaughter 173 points174 points  (8 children)

I'll never forget him as the antagonist in "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover". He's just the most horribly abusive asshole to his wife (Helen Mirren).

And it's a testament to his ability that I could then believe him as Dumbledore after that.

[–]ManUtd1994 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I mean I’d say that the two roles are pretty similar if you know about dumbledore

[–]UncannyTarotSpread 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Good reference! He was a fantastic actor, with the best voice. Damn.

[–]subhumanprimate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are HUMILIATED in front of the lady...

[–]residentdunce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't even recognise him in that film. I kept checking the credits thinking where the hell Michael Gambon was. He is fantastic!

[–]CenterAisle 193 points194 points  (4 children)

“To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.”

Condolences to his family and loved ones.

[–]TheFinalDecision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean Balenciaga

[–]badnboo_gee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Don't pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and above all, those who live without love." I always hear it in his voice.

[–]Rockky67 41 points42 points  (4 children)

So good in The Singing Detective

[–]funwithdesign 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I’d forgotten all about this. I remember as a kid thinking it was pretty scary

[–]Triskan 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It's in Sleepy Hollow I first met him. Still very fond of the movie though I havent revisted it in a very long while. Kinda wonder how well it has aged.

[–]Mandrake1771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it last month, still really enjoyed it

[–]kdlangequalsgoddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely hammy. Absolutely everyone is overacting. Still good fun, though. I especially liked the cameo of Christopher Lee as the magistrate who dispatches our luckless hero up the Hudson River Valley.

[–]randomsnowflake 151 points152 points  (6 children)

Holding my wand to the sky today.

[–]xigua22 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Just dont get arrested for it.

[–]beanscornandrice 60 points61 points  (5 children)

Damn, losing all the great ones I grew up watching.

[–]Entire-Ranger323 -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Which means….? Think about it. (Me too)

[–]beanscornandrice 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Which means I'm getting old and it reminds me of my own mortality, everything is temporary so take none of this too seriously.

That's what it means to me.

[–]Entire-Ranger323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I’ve been getting lately. I’m seeing all the famous people are dying or dead. As a result, I just updated my will! Ha ha ha!

[–]NU-NRG 55 points56 points  (7 children)

Really enjoyed his role as Robin William's military brother in Toys (1992).

[–]Osiris32 27 points28 points  (5 children)

The movie that predicted drones. And had LL Cool J dressed up as a couch.

[–]beatnik_squaresville 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you disrespecting my duplication investigation!?

[–]nullibicity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he played his uncle.

[–]BlacklightChainsaw 19 points20 points  (4 children)

He was excellent as the Villain in Open Range with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall

[–]blue_13 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I had no idea he was in this.

[–]BlacklightChainsaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an outstanding film

[–]kdlangequalsgoddess 2 points3 points  (1 child)

One of my favourite memories of my dad, who died six months ago, was his enjoyment of the final shootout. He was agog at the skill of the technical direction. If anyone reading this was involved with the making of that film, thank you.

[–]-Dorothy-Zbornak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ending is one of my favorites. I’m not a movie fan so I’ve never watched the entire movie but I’ll put that on, turn the volume up, and just enjoy the action.

[–]Scoot_Cooder 32 points33 points  (1 child)

this is like the third time dumbledore has died.

[–]Reidroshdy 35 points36 points  (16 children)

He was great as Dumbledore, may he rest in peace.

[–]Lumpwithknobs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Easy when you know how”

[–]roks92 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Oh man, I'll be having a Harry Potter marathon this weekend in his memory.

[–]caitmr17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

already started mine. Busted out my elder wand and that’s digging beside me lol. Such a sad day

[–]ThereminLiesTheRub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Singing Detective was my first exposure. Great stuff.

[–]chilipalmer99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have never seen the TV series "Longitude" starring Michael Gambon, make the effort to find it and view it. Seriously, some of the best television ever.

[–]bokononon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Singing Detective was one of the best TV shows ever. The soundtrack is excellent as well.

"The human mind has to ask 'who did it?' It always has to be somebody, doesn't it? There's no room for nobody."

[–]NotAPreppie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Rounding that final corner in the sky.

(Corner in the top-right was named after him after he nearly flipped a reasonably-priced car at that spot.)

[–]newleafkratom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Albert Spica - one of cinema’s greatest villains

[–]Im_just_saying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he was stellar in Quartet! He will be missed.

[–]griffinsknight7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He took a supporting role in a literary adaptation of Wives and Daughters, and made Squire Hambley the most hilarious, heartbreaking rendition of an English country gentleman that I've ever seen.

Godspeed, good sir.

[–]Dr_Waffle_Farts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

RIP to my favorite gangster from Layer Cake, and my second favorite Dumbledore.

[–]fresh-condoms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved him as the voice of Bean in Fantastic Mr. Fox

[–]jugglervr 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Michael Gambon, star of Harry Potter and The Singing Detective

I don't know that HP film...

[–]DerekB52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw an article that said "Harry Potter and Gosford Park Actor". I was like, HP and the what?

[–]Tankmaster5000 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Lets not forget the Prophet in Elder Scrolls Online.

Going to have to watch Sleepy Hollow tonight.

[–]ask-me-about-my-cats 2 points3 points  (1 child)

He played the Prophet?! I hadn't noticed at all, but now that I think about it I can't unhear it.

[–]Tankmaster5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! That voice is so distinct.

[–]AnonUserAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if anyone has questioned Snape.

[–]mataviejit4s69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will never forget him, and his participation in the og top gear

[–]tardiscoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Varen Aquilarios you will be missed.

[–]Danivelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rest in peace. You were a great Dumbledore!

[–]pretender80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I don't see it mentioned in the comments, he was also very good in the Dr Who Xmas special, which is one of my favorite versions of a Christmas Carol

[–]yourawizzzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup time to binge harry potter again

[–]Mild-Ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy one of his earliest films - The Beast Must Die

[–]theunpaintedhuffines 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He was so good in Open Range. Such an evil character.

[–]kdlangequalsgoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think actors love a good villainous role. Getting the audience to absolutely hate them means they've succeeded as an actor. Plus, it's often enormous fun.

[–]kedwards3917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one’s gonna mention Clean Slate? Surely a role he looked upon with pride

[–]ShadowMadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will certainly miss this man. What a legendary career this man's had. Though he might not have been the original, I'll always remember his time as Dumbledore, like I'm sure many others will. More recently, he was very fun to hear in Elder Scrolls Online as the voice of the Prophet. Sometimes it's hard to believe that the HP films are 20+ years old by now but then you look at the cast and how much its shrunk, and it really hits you.

Shame it feels like this news has been overshadowed by other topics today for some reason.

[–]asatbasdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rest in peace dumbledore

[–]falcorthex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosford Park was my go to.

[–]kdlangequalsgoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His Inspector Maigret was superb. I have heard good things about Rowan Atkinson's portrayal, but Gambon made the role his own.

[–]nickyeyez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was watching Layer Cake when I read the news. Spooky.

[–]jokekiller94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dicks out for Dumbledore.

[–]Viscount_Vagina04 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Sir Michael John Gambon...put some respect on his name!

[–]danhalka 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Technically, it's just a title for living ppl. Regardless, the title's not what we're here to respect.

I could listen to the man's voice for hours on end. Really liked his smallish turns in The Good Shepherd and The Insider.

[–]Mein_Bergkamp 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The title stays, there's entire crypts full of dead knights, especially since his isn't hereditary and belonged only to him

[–]MynameisJunie -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Am I an asshole for thinking he already died a long time ago? Condolences:(

[–]FabiusBill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris.

[–]ddiiibb -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Great actor, terrible Dumbledore. Bring on the downvotes. I'm ready.

[–]FingerGungHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great actor! Sad to see he has passed. RIP.

[–]brihamedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:S just a few hours ago I saw the harry potter fart clip and I was wondering that the old dumbledore guy is dead and that's why they got the other guy to play dumbledore. He wasn't dead apparently. RIP

[–]Leftleaningdadbod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A magnificent actor. Seems to have been highly quotable too, I hadn’t known about that side of his talent.

[–]beatmaster808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad day.

He was a great stage actor and tremendously funny

[–]dinoroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really thought his was the best Dumbledore. Richard Harris really did come off as a fragile old man, but Gambon breathed life into the role of Dumbledore, he truly was a Dumbledore with style.

[–]Rogue42bdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First David McCallum, now Micheal Gambon, who’s going to be the third old actor from the British Isles to pass? Or have I missed someone?

[–]MoveDifficult1908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phillip Marlowe in Pennies from Heaven. A true tour de force.
