Pop music
I struggle to get my head around the fact that the music and musicians that are pumped out on radio are recognised as being good. Given the breadth of music, the genres available and the talent of so many musicians, it makes me sad knowing that there are prodigal artists out there that never see the light of day whereas trash like Ice Spice, Nicki Minaj, Harry Styles etc are all raking in the cash from mediocre music.
A yearly tradition inspired by ToddInTheShadows, what was the small part of the song that was just awful in 2022?
A couple nominations:
-
Machine Gun Kelly's "i'm in loooooooooooove" at the end of Emo Girl (yes this song actually did come out this year)
-
"En la calle ando sUELTO, pero por tI ME QUITO" on Me Porto Bonito
-
"A B C D E F U" or even worse, "A B C D E FORGET YOU"
-
the "oohhh we oh we oh" on Unholy
-
and honestly, take a pick of any line from the chorus of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Bitch" (my pick is "just another narcissist" because that word has been run into the ground so much this year)
So what was the worst 2 seconds of popular music this year?
What are some of the albums which you consider to be the worst?
Surely Christina Aguilera's Lotus is one of them. It looks so cheaply edited, that it is shocking. Your Body's single cover was so much better in comparison.
Especially after Bionic which provided some great visuals, from the cover to the booklet. Imagine going from this, to this.
Did they work? Were they underwhelming or surprisingly good? Here are some of mine:
Rihanna and Coldplay on Princess of China (used to be obsessed with it)
Taylor Swift and Future on End Game (this one is somewhat controversial but I think it worked?)
Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar on Don’t Wanna Know (not my cuppa)
Inspired by ToddInTheShadows' as it is every year, what are some of the worst moments from a pop song this year?
Some of my answers are:
-
"can't make a wife out of a ho, oh" from Without You by The Kid Laroi
-
"fancy like, ooooooo" from Fancy Like by Walker Hayes
-
the final "girl put your records on" where it sounds like the world is melting from Put Your Records On by Ritt Momney
-
"weeeee are never ever ever" from Taylor's version of We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
I’ll start.
Mariah Carey and Eminem.
Just… why?
I think that the modern equivalent of that would Machine Gun Kelly calling out Beyoncé in his music, just a bit surreal.
My favourite is when Katy Perry dissed Taylor Swift and then Taylor had the nerve to release her music on streaming the same day as katy perry's album. Lol
Enya is one of them, as is the late great Sinead O’Connor or Phoebe Bridges.
Another one that comes to mind is Morten Harket.

Especially being in a music conservatory, SOOOO many people don’t enjoy pop music. And a lot of my friend’s arguments are, “it’s just like 3 chords” and complaining about how simple it is. The more and more I started producing my own music, I realized how difficult it is to make something like that. There’s always tiny changes in production that go unnoticed but can make or break a song. Idk, let me know if you have other reasons why you hate it or why you like it
I hear it in Pinkpantheress,
I hear it in Agora Hills by Doja Cat (a song that's wildly different from anything else on that album and with the most success right now)
I even hear it in Tate McRae, she sounds like a mix of Pinkpantheress and Camila Cabello.
Every era of pop had many trends happening simultaneously (like 2016 had the trop pop and trap music, 2012 had EDM and indie pop)
We're clearly in the era of Y2K nostalgia, thin eyebrows, grainy retro music videos, girlie aesthetic, and IDK how this new trend fits into all this but it all makes sense somehow. The thin eyebrows too.
Is there anyone else who noticed this and who could give more examples of this baby voice ?
We felt it was appropriate to allow discussion of the ongoing unrest after George Floyd's murder. As the music industry responds to the situation, feel free to post their social media responses and we will keep this thread updated.

So, i personally have a VERY diverse music library. I’ve got everything from Ambient to Post-Hardcore, Pop, Folk, Rap, Classic Rock, Jazz & a lot of things in between and on the edges.
One thing that has always annoyed the daylights out of me though, is people who dismiss pop music, simply because it’s popular. That’s such a ridiculous viewpoint to have and i’m just curious if other people feel similarly? To me, if you like a certain song or album or artist, you shouldn’t be criticized because of how mainstream (or not) it is. Thoughts?
After replacing jazz, rock was the most popular genre of pop music. The 1950s had Elvis. 1960s had Rolling Stones. The 1970s had Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Sabbath. 1980s had Metallica, Bon Jovi, AC DC. 1990s had grunge bands like Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Early 2000s had Nu Metal. Mid-Late 2000s had pop punk and emo.
My childhood was Blink 182, Greenday, Sum 41, Simple Plan, All American Rejects, Dashboard Confessional and Plain White T's. 2009 was the last year most of these bands had major hits.
But overnight, rock became an after thought in the cultural zeitgeist. Rap, R&B and Hip Hop became the most popular genre of pop music. By 2013, this was complete. A lot has been written about this. But not much has been written why? A quick google search provides lots of articles about when rap/hip hop took over, but none properly explain why.
Here are my theories, not in any order of importance.
1. Accessibility: With the rise of the internet, anyone could download a beat and rap to it. They can edit and remix it. Rap and dance music is the best genres to use. When people enjoy something, on some level they want to imagine they are doing it. Compare this to rock. You need at least 4 people. Lots of expensive equipment like guitars, drums and microphones. A place to store and practice, without people complaining about noise. Must be good looking and have some charisma.
2. The Great Recession: The economy crashed in 2007/2008. Suddenly songs about high school crushes didn't seem relevant to middle class kids anymore when their parents losing their jobs and homes became a very real prospect. Society became more mature. Songs about getting drunk at the club sounded better than a song that could play in a Disney Channel movie.
3. Dad Rock: Gen X had become parents and rock became associated with them. Need I say more?
4. Emo/Scene Music: The last phase of pop punk, really the last mainstream rock scene, didn't have as wide appeal. It was actually (unfairly) hated by a lot of people in the rock world. It didn't click with anyone outside white middle class teens leaving the rest of society to find alternate alt music.
5. The "mainstreaming" of rap: The 90s had rappers like Tupac and Biggie. But the new millennium had Eminem who made rap accessible to middle class kids.
6.Lack of evolution: The pop punk era ran its course. It had its 15 years in the sun. But nothing came after that. Why? I don't know. Probably with so many young people turning to rap and dance music, there wasn't a new generation of rockers who could potentially blow up. Pop punk is having a slight resurgence with folks like Olivia Rodrigo.
thought this might be an interesting discussion. examples of successful: in summer renaissance, beyonce rhymes givenchy with beyonce, pronouncing it “be-yon-see” instead of “be-yon-say.” it seems like that was received very positively.
however, on the other hand, camila cabello in Never Be the Same rhymes nicotine, morphine, with “hero-ween,” which was met with mixed reception / cringe.
there’s a lot more examples, but I wanted to know what y’all think make this land well vs makes it cringe?
also, feel free to mention your examples of this trope being super successful and/or being a total failure.
Loosely inspired by conversation in r/Deuxmoi.
Pop music relies very heavily on marketing. Many songs come hand in hand with the drama that produced them (a recent example is Drivers License, which got a lot of attention due to the love triangle), and it’s always very important that people are talking about you - not just the music but who you are, what you represent, what your “thing” is, e.t.c.
Because of this, a lot of artists’ success relies on good PR and making the public know about them almost as much as it does music. But what about when an artist goes too overboard with the marketing? Time and time again we see a singer go through an insanely successful year, only for the public to turn on them due to exhaustion of seeing them everywhere. What are some good examples of this? (My first thought was Taylor Swift in 2015/2016, but I’m interested in hearing older examples too). Adding on - what are some current artists who think are in danger of being overexposed, or already have the GP growing tired of them?
Is it possible to be popular and avoid this? Or is it guaranteed that if you reach a certain level of fame the public will grow exhausted of you? (What goes up must come down, if you will). How do you keep the balance and manage to keep your name in the news enough to stay relevant, but not enough that normal people who were impartial before begin to resent you? What are some artists that you guys think have mastered this balance, and how?
I’m very interested in hearing what you have to say!
Smartest for me is pretty much every artist that managed to have a highly successful comeback after a period of sharp decline in popularity. Madonna pretty much invented the whole concept of "eras" by realizing that she had to tone down her aggressive, highly provocative and sexualised image if she wanted to stay successful because the general public had had enough of that. Mariah also took a completely new route to recover from the failure of Glitter - her 1990s type of artist was not only no longer sustainable for her voice but also no longer the main trend in the business, so she had to jump onto what was popular at the time and make that hers.
Dumbest move, maybe Azealia Banks' entire life after 2011 lol. The moment you start getting into trashy twitter feuds with random people, writing racist slurs and messing with your lgbt fans, your career is over.
I'm opening a discussion about pop music being feminised and the closed-minded practise of labelling men that like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, or Dua Lipa, 'gay'. I find that in some social groups the word is weaponised to threaten men into prescribing to 'traditional masculine preferences', which often ranges from rap to trap, or all in all anything that isn't pop music, and more particularly anything that isn't female. Let's discuss this conditioning, and the relationship between homophobia, sexism and pop music.

i divided by genre, so some people appear on multiple lists. I am not a musicologist; please do not ask me why i categorized an artist in one genre, but not the other. if the grammys never even get it right, how can i?
methodology: i included artists who give a clear answer being a part of the community, have had it verified being queer and/or queerness some tangible way, have passed, and/or discuss queer themes in the first person in a moderate or significant part of their body of work. i did not include comedy artists, so you will not see too many camp acts or drag queens here.
key:
-
* = person and/or representation of color, mostly black
-
(+) = noticeably problematic
-
(#) - uses queer themes or narrators often, but not verified
if I missed someone, or misidentified someone, post a response with their name and genre. i will edit & include them.

I thought it'd be fun to discuss some of the things our favorite artists usually won't address, but it's something well-known by most fans. What are some of the biggest well-known yet never discussed facts in pop music?
It’s the cinema double feature of the summer. If you’ve been anywhere on the internet in recent months you’ll be aware of the hype building surrounding two very different movies dropping on July 21, 2023. Barbie vs. Oppenheimer. The battle of the bomb vs. the bombshell. With all this talk online recently about these two movies going head-to-head this week, it’s got me thinking about similar phenomenon in music.
When have two different artists released music on the same week? What were your favourite chart battles? Do you remember the discourse? Who were you siding for at the time?
I initially wanted to ask for examples with two artists who are polar opposites to match with the Barbie/Oppenheimer contrast comparison (the release between Taylor Swift’s Lover and Tool’s Fear Inoculum in 2019 comes to mind) but perhaps that might be a bit too specific…

K-Pop (Korean popular music) is a musical genre consisting of pop, dance, electropop, hiphop, rock, R&B, and electronic music originating in South Korea. In addition to music, K-Pop has grown into a popular subculture, resulting in widespread interest in the fashion and style of Korean idol groups and singers.
