This one had a famously fraught production, with directors being changed out numerous times and vision changing with each one. The result was kind of a mess, but damn it. If you are interested in watching a movie called The Wolfman, it is for two reasons: you want to see a wolfman, and you want to see him do wolfman stuff. And oh my gratuitous violence does it deliver! No fewer than four werewolf rampages, and the movie makes sure you see every brutal mauling in excessive gory detail. The monster itself is also well-realized with mostly practical effects enhanced by CGI. Hugo Weaving, Emily Blunt, and del Toro himself all give good performances, and Anthony Hopkins is at his very most Anthony Hopkins as the questionably sane father.
All in all, not exactly a criterion collection classic but definitely fun as hell and worth a rewatch for Halloween.
