Janet Leigh is also Jamie Lee Curtis' mother.

[–]Taint_Hunter 378 points379 points  (59 children)

I didn’t know this, thank you.

[–]CrocodileJock 240 points241 points  (57 children)

You did know her dad was the actor Tony Curtis though, didn’t you?

[–]Civil-Attempt-3602 139 points140 points  (48 children)

I didn't know this. But I have no idea who Janet Leigh is either so I guess I just didn't know her parents

[–]gigglefarting 297 points298 points  (46 children)

Janet Leigh played Norma in Halloween H2O, and Marion in Psycho.

[–]LinkRazr 105 points106 points  (2 children)

I heard that they used the same car in both movies, also.

[–]mull3286 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Prove it

[–]Left-Language9389 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that pictures isn’t proof. One is a wagon. The other a four-door sedan. Same plates though.

[–]Civil-Attempt-3602 28 points29 points  (38 children)

I figured that from the title, but I haven't seen either of them

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (9 children)

You should definitely watch psycho. Halloween h20 could be skipped although you should see the first two Halloween movies

[–]stickittodolores 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I only used to watch Halloween h20 for Josh Hartnett tbh.

[–]stray-bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I imagine that Halloween is a rather popular series for them to have made 20 movies.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to have like almost 20 of them. Between the remakes and the originals I think there are 8 or 10 of them

[–]derf_vader 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Or anything else with Jamie Lee Curtis

[–]MyDogHasAPodcast 62 points63 points  (22 children)

You should. Psycho is a really good movie.

People nowadays (not everyone, mind you) are put off by black & white movies but it's a good psychological thriller. And if you enjoy psycho I'd recommend going down the Hitchcock rabbit hole and watch some of the movies he made.

Edit.Typo.

[–]gigglefarting 59 points60 points  (4 children)

I watched Psycho when I was in middle school. For years after that, whenever I took a shower I made sure I brought my cat into the bathroom with me. I didn't think he would protect me, but at least he could warn me like a canary in a coal mine. Not once was I attacked in the shower with him there, so it must have worked.

[–]DiscoJanetsMarble 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Lisa, I would like to buy your rock

[–]MyDogHasAPodcast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shrugs and takes the money

[–]MyDogHasAPodcast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not once was I attacked in the shower with him there, so it must have worked.

Makes perfect sense. The cat created an invisible shield/barrier anytime you'd take him with you in the bathroom to take a shower.

[–]DeezRodenutz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife thinks my chihuahua is useless, and doesn't believe me that she keeps the Elephants away.
And since they are not native to the US, apparently she's actually really good at keeping them away.

[–]Papaofmonsters 13 points14 points  (3 children)

People nowadays (not everyone, mind you) are put off by black & white movies but it's a good psychological thriller.

Which is such a shame. I'm in my thirties but Casablanca and 12 Angry Men are a couple of my favorite movies ever. If I ignored them just because they are black and white I would have missed them and many other fantastic films.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take much to see that the problems of movie colour don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that.

[–]Frillic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

12 Angry Men is such a great movie. I liked Casablanca but 12 Angry Men is in my top 100 movies of all time.

[–]my7bizzos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine"

It is a shame. I just started getting into old films a few years ago. I was always put off by b&w but now I can't get enough of 'em, I especially enjoy the film noir genre and of course anything with bogie.

[–]BornAgainCyclist 7 points8 points  (1 child)

And if you enjoy psycho I'd recommend going down the Hitchcock rabbit hole and watch some of the movies he made.

I agree with you on psycho and also recommend rear window for the person you're responding to.

[–]bob1689321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol I also was about to suggest Rear Window. Dude made a ton of bangers though. Dial M for Murder, Rope, Shadow of a Doubt, 39 Steps. Really can't go wrong with Hitchcock.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And then once you watched all of Hitchcock’s movies, watch Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety.

[–]Tau_Iota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo Psycho is better than Halloween. The doctor just stands in one spot half the movie, Michael is kind of a doof, Laurie is dope af tho, and all of her friends were absolutely awful lol

Psycho was great because from the first death, you just have no idea wtf gonna happen

[–]Civil-Attempt-3602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to just watch it's on Amazon prime in the UK, I'll add it to the list and check it out

[–]forgedinbeerkegs -1 points0 points  (5 children)

The remake starring Vince Vaughn is verbatim as the original. So, if B&W turns someone off, watch the remake.

[–]aveganliterary 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Ugh. The remake is ugly, poorly acted, and is just a travesty compared to the original. I'd rather someone never see Psycho than think that hot garbage is an equivalent to Hitchcock's masterpiece.

[–]sofakingchillbruh 5 points6 points  (2 children)

So if I’ve only seen the remake, and liked it, I should watch the original?

[–]redicoyote -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I actually like this version better, because of the color and because Vaughn is creepy AF

[–]redicoyote -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There's also a shot for shot color remake of Psycho with Vince Vaughn and Vigo Mortenson, made in the 90's. Great film. Vaughn is perfect as Norman. Let's just say the addition of colors like red has quite an effect.

[–]dj_soo 2 points3 points  (4 children)

psycho was basically the precursor to the slasher genre.

Halloween is also considered one of the defining films that solidified the genre and brought it to the mainstream.

Kind of fitting that mother and daughter were both involved in such influential films...

[–]Green-Z 11 points12 points  (3 children)

“What pig?”

[–]DimiDrake 4 points5 points  (1 child)

“Seaman Hornsby is a swine!”

[–]Green-Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, he was the ugliest!

[–]JakeCameraAction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a great movie.

[–]thefutureisdoomed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason was thinking of Tony Todd (Candyman) when I read this, and was like, yeah I dont think thats accurate lol

[–]jtfff 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Do you know who Marvin Gaye Jr.’s dad was?

[–]Dorlem4832 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some Gaye guy is my guess.

[–]KillerOrangeCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a joke in the movie where Janet's character tells Jamie's character "I know it's not my place... if I could be maternal for a moment..."

[–]the_turn 46 points47 points  (2 children)

Buried the lede.

[–]Carpeteria3000 38 points39 points  (1 child)

The Leighd, even

[–]the_turn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

V. good.

[–]TMac1088 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I was going to say...that's the even better part of the movie detail.

[–]arealhumannotabot 56 points57 points  (3 children)

Janet Leigh

Jamie LEE

...mygod...

[–]KKW_KMG 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also, her father is Tony Curtis :)

[–]OFTHEHILLPEOPLE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It all makes sense!

[–]249ba36000029bbe9749 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Why did you say that name?"

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (12 children)

IIRC that's also big part of the reason Carpenter wanted her in the first place!

[–]MyDumbInterests 57 points58 points  (11 children)

A further connection is that Dr Loomis from the Halloween series was named after Sam Loomis from Psycho.

Then there was Billy Loomis in Scream to continue the tradition. It's a shame there no decade-defining horror movie has picked up the baton since.

[–]LetUsAllYowz 43 points44 points  (2 children)

It's because we lost Wes Craven. I always held he's the only man to reinvent the genre 3 times.

First Proto-Slasher Film, 1972 Last House on The Left

Reinvents the genre, gives it it's most famous character 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street

Reinvents the genre again, the first Meta Slasher Movie 1996 Scream

The man was a true visionary and I'll always be sad we lost him.

[–]MikeRoykosGhost 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Peeping Tom was a proto-slasher from 1960.

[–]LetUsAllYowz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes but that doesn't fit with my Craven fan boy statement lol

[–]OzzRamirez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, as a sort of consolation prize we got horror-themed wrestler Dexter Lumis in NXT

[–]livestrongbelwas 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Looking at you, Conjuring series

[–]Hyrule_Hyahed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also why Janet Leigh says ‘if I could be maternal for a moment’

[–]lemonylol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, OP probably missed that since he's just a spam farm account.

[–]hwc000000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just as Norma is Norman Bates' mother in Psycho.

[–]FergusCragson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this! Take my upvote.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jamie Leigh-Curtis.

[–]The_Flying_Jew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knew about this for a while, but I assumed Janet Leigh's name was spelled "Lee", giving more connection to Jamie Lee Curtis

[–]runnerchicLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was hoping someone acknowledged this. I was named after Janet Leigh.

[–]Penguin619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also both were titled Scream Queens in their respective movies (Psycho and Halloween)

[–]tuckertucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and Jamie Lee Curtis is Jake Gyllenhaal's godmother

[–]Old-Jackfruit1321 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just about to mention this

[–]thetwodeadboys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i literally thought that’s how this post was going to end up but (sigh) here we are.

[–]SulkyShulk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And Jamie Lee Curtis is Janet Leigh's son.

[–]CementCemetery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised this wasn’t in the title either.

[–]GreyStagg 455 points456 points  (5 children)

You missed out (to me) the best thing about this. A piece of the score from Psycho plays when Norma first walks towards the car.

[–]Hyrule_Hyahed 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yes! My favourite nod as well

[–]dani3po 114 points115 points  (1 child)

Also, when Jamie tells her she is having a hard time because of Halloween coming, she answers something like "I have also suffered my share of pain in the past".

[–]Hyrule_Hyahed 58 points59 points  (0 children)

And Janet quotes the Sheriff from Halloween (1978) when she scares Jamie ‘I guess everyone’s entitled to one good scare’

[–]roto_disc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

She also has a gag about showers. It’s great.

[–]simulacrotron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the musical note here is what made me go “ah ha!” When I saw this.

[–]Raggedy-Man 160 points161 points  (16 children)

Marion = I Norma

Checks out

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (9 children)

I really hope this was their thought process, this is great

[–]sergio_mcginty 51 points52 points  (8 children)

Or perhaps a play on the name of the main character of Psycho (“Norman”)?

[–]ColsonIRL 57 points58 points  (5 children)

Norman Bates's mom is Norma Bates.

[–]sergio_mcginty 15 points16 points  (4 children)

For the number of times I’ve seen psycho, kind of shocked that I somehow never picked up on mother’s actual name!

[–]ColsonIRL 4 points5 points  (3 children)

No worries, I think it's only said once or twice, by the sheriff's wife or maybe the sheriff?

[–]happysunbear 10 points11 points  (2 children)

It is only said once in the original film, and you only hear it as a voiceover, when Marion’s sister discovers the corpse in the basement.

Norman runs into the room in mother’s clothing and you hear “I’m Norma Bates! AHHH!!!” in an old woman’s voice.

[–]ColsonIRL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You know, you're absolutely right. Thanks for the clarification.

[–]happysunbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! I rewatch the movie like once a year so I know it inside and out 🤣

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That works too!

[–]JoshDM 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Norma also reminiscent of NormaN BATES .

[–]happysunbear 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Norma Bates is also the name of Norman’s mother.

[–]JoshDM 3 points4 points  (2 children)

SPOILERS!

[–]Viking_Lordbeast 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Dang I wish I read this first! I thought her name was Mother!

[–]JoshDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought her name was Mother!

Why did you say that name? Mother? Why did you say that name? WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?

[–]PKMNTrainerMark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tom Riddle energy.

[–]Orion_possibly 54 points55 points  (2 children)

There are several layers of references in this once scene

  1. Janet Leigh is the real life mother of Jamie Lee Curtis.

  2. Janet Leigh plays Marion Crane in Psycho (1960), and in this scene in Halloween H20 (1998) Leigh’s character, Norma, is driving the same car has her character, Marion, in Psycho

  3. A small section of the score from Psycho is played when Norma gets out of her car Halloween H20

  4. Leigh’s character in Halloween H20 is named Norma after “The Mother” character in Psycho, Norma Bates. Not to be confused with her son, Norman Bates

[–]DickensYermouth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad somebody put all of these together in one place. Also, although she was asked to several times in her career. Jamie Lee Curtis refused to recreate her mother's shower scene from Psycho because she never wanted to be famous just for being the child of famous actors. (She did eventually agree to do it for Scream Queens, and it was brilliant.)

[–]SpotlessMinded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The plate says NFB, does that have any significance? Like “Norman Fucking Bates”

[–]Future_Victory 56 points57 points  (12 children)

Marion has come back from the dead! Maybe she took revenge on Norman Bates off-screen? Who knows

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Nah, she wouldn't even harm a fly

[–]Future_Victory -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Great pun, mate!

[–]TheAllyCrime 19 points20 points  (8 children)

Spoiler alert!

I rented that movie from Blockbuster back in 1964 and was just now getting ready to watch it!

I swear if any one of you tells me what happens to Jesus after that “last supper” deal I will go nuts!

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (6 children)

Was she Jim Carey’s secretary in Liar Liar?

[–]mayoroftuesday 19 points20 points  (3 children)

You’re thinking of Anne Haney. They look somewhat similar.

[–]fuuckimlate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was thinking she looked like the social worker in Mrs Doubtfire who put the cake frosting under her eyes

Edit: omg that is anne haney

[–]ZippZappZippty[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you lick it’s ghostface

[–]lanceturley 45 points46 points  (3 children)

The car looks great! Slight water damage, though.

[–]Kornbrednbizkits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Took me a minute

[–]redditpics617 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Still disappointed that the whole movie didn’t take place underwater...

[–]feebleposition 19 points20 points  (12 children)

Man, I have this movie downloaded and have yet to watch it. I recently have been going back and watching all the old scary movies. Halloween, FT13th, NOES, etc. This movie is next on my list!

Dead by Daylight inspired me haha

[–]MrCaul 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Be sure to check out The Thing (1982).

[–]LordRumBottoms 7 points8 points  (3 children)

The Fog is one of Carpenter's best IMO. I love that movie and the score is amazing.

[–]bballinYo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Starring both Jamie Lee Curtis AND Janet Leigh!

[–]Gisbornite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it first when I was like 10 I think it was, and traumatised me so much that I get shivers whenever I see pictures of Michael Myers.

So based off that metric I think its probably pretty good

[–]Bozee3 1 point2 points  (3 children)

The Mist, and look for the black and white version.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing H20 in the theater. Not bad. Some pretty memorable deaths, if you watch slasher movies for such things. My brothers and I have these conversations lol.

[–]BLM-TheNewBrowncoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Changeling with George C Scott.

[–]rxsuperhero 9 points10 points  (1 child)

The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 two door hardtop. Beautiful!!!

[–]Saturnus8698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50's cars are my favorite and it's always neat to see them in more modern movies

[–]obeythed 5 points6 points  (1 child)

They’re also in The Fog together

[–]babywraith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're mother and daughter.

[–]Bullbladder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also if you listen to the music as she walks toward the car, it sounds just like the Psycho theme music.

[–]bbuck96 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Why is it that the only license plate I can remember is KFBR-392?

Alternate universe where she didn't stop at that hotel.

[–]duckerby-6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really cool detail /Easter egg.

Better than a lot of stuff that seems to crop up on this sub which is often interpreting meaning? (no offense)

[–]Architect81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its her mum as well

[–]ProbablyASithLord 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I just watched psycho for the first time and was soo impressed. It holds up so well as a horror movie, and you can immediately spot the scene that Tarantino adapts for pulp fiction, which is pretty neat.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Which Tarantino scene would that be?

[–]ProbablyASithLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Marion is driving out of town her boss is crossing in front of her at the crosswalk. They lock eyes and he looks confused.

Quentin paid homage to this scene when Butch and Marsellus Wallas see each other after Butch goes back to his apartment for his watch.

[–]Sgtwhiskeyjack9105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have assumed the fact that Janet Leigh is Jamie Lee Curtis' mother would have been mentioned also.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also JLC’s real mom.

[–]DeusoftheWired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leigh was also the inspiration for Ari Aster to name Ellen Leigh in Hereditary.

[–]Christmas_Panda -1 points0 points  (2 children)

By chance do you think it was the actress' personal vehicle?

[–]doublesailorsandcola 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nope. It's owned by Universal studios, it's the same vehicle the family drove in Leave it to Beaver, according to IMDB.

[–]Christmas_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh cool!

[–]alemanimani -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Awesome

[–]ian007i -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Thats some serious boomer shit right there

[–]itlivesinthewall 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That doesn't even make sense

[–]digitaleJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is she a teapot?

[–]PM_Nightly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now THIS is a movie detail!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now THIS is a movie detail!

[–]raudssus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow............... the best Movie Detail so far. That is fantastic!

[–]ExtracurricularLoan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outfit reminds me of “Vertigo”

[–]ravageprimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was in a really good episode of Columbo

[–]soulless-tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dang. janet just can't get away from these serial murderers can she

[–]redditor_aborigine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marion Crane was an especially unappealing character.

[–]1ncitatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good one.

[–]slardybartfast8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good one. I love it. Thanks OP

[–]Mild-Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still the dumbest name for a horror sequel.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternate timeline where Marion gets away with the money and changes her identity?

[–]ghandi3737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So she became mother?

[–]thepotawatomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad mom's take no responsibility and get all the credit. I'll Lynch this b**** because you won't.

[–]ReservoirDolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though pretty much all subtlety was ripped away when they played the music from Psycho in the scene.

[–]SeptemberEnded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re all entitled to one good scare.

[–]martiandude00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they just reused a prop there buddy.

[–]Obandigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KFBR392

[–]MooneyGWhiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, funny Janet Leigh story, whom I met right about this time (we were sat next to each other at a luncheon for reasons not relevant to the story). She was telling everyone at the table how exciting it was that suddenly, years after Psycho, she was suddenly a hot property again and getting asked to do all kinds of interesting things (like this film). “That’s so great,” said I, then proceeding to put my foot firmly in my mouth, “It’s like everything old is new again.” Knew the second it came out of my mouth what an asinine thing that was to say. She froze for a second. “Well, yes... I suppose...”, she said, then turned away. Didn’t say another thing to me for the entire meal—rightly so. I spent the rest of the meal mentally slapping myself upside the head.

[–]DADDYR0UNDR0UND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if it’s been said but they play a version of the psycho song as she gets in her car and drives away

[–]TheDivine_MissN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this little Easter egg.

[–]Gabecush1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There more then one

[–]Xeviic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And she says that there is a problem with the showers

[–]Fallenangel152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone else been calling this movie Halloween aich-two-oh for 20 years? Found out a few years ago that it's Halloween H-twenty because it was released 20 years after the original.

[–]FapplePie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halloween H20 is not nearly as shitty as people say.

[–]Kohgahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the Psycho theme song plays when she returns to her car.

[–]Elysian-Visions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Norma is a play on Norman (Bates).

[–]flakk14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All in the little deets

[–]Phan2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we now know that somewhere, Norman Bates and Busta Rhymes exist in the same universe.

[–]amayagab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, some good fucking Movie Details

[–]tealfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And she's probably carrying embezzled money in that purse as well!

[–]Dabrigstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dammit, according to Halloween canon, this movie no longer exists!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it just me, or did anyone else think it was christopher walken in the top photo for a second?

[–]kyler32291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a great Halloween podcast. "In Myers we Trust With Gyers and Rust. It's Matt Gourley and Paul Rust. Heh.

[–]kimkardashean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this woman also Fletchers secretary in Liar Liar?

[–]D_NEEVES_201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never noticed that before.

[–]BigLebowski0324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H2O was seriously underrated IMO. They had little Easter eggs like that, that show the writers really put a lot of thought into the script they were making. Unlike the majority of “rush it on out” so we can make a dollar sequels that we get these days. Also bringing back nurse Chambers was a nice addition. The two worst things about Halloween H2O were A: Josh Hartnett’s unibrow and try to hard to look “edgy” greasy messy hair and B: Creed’s “What’s This Life For” closing out the end credits. Halloween H2O received a lot of scrutiny for seeming to much like another Scream movie which were popular at the time, rather than sticking to its more traditional roots which is what made Halloween a successful franchise in the first place. We already had the latest Scream movie plus the I Know What You Did Last Summer series and Urban Legends.

[–]bigbubbuzbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halloween CO2 rumored to be in discussions with Greta Thunberg as the "lead" character.
