I've been wondering whether there is any truly plausible take on where sandworms might theoretically be situated on the tree of life if they were part of Earth's biodiversity legacy.
Are they some form of genetically engineered reptilians?
Are they some form of invertebrate?
Given there connections with humans as the novels progress could they be some wildly altered form of mammalian close to homo sapiens?
Are they truly the only alien form of life in the Dune Saga?
I have no answer, only questions, but am really interested to hear others' perspectives whether based on textual evidence or one's own guess work.
Hi everyone. I was wondering can someone give a detailed and accessible explanation of what exactly Genetic Memory is in Dune? I am struggling to understand this important and complex idea (and how it functions) in Frank Herbert’s Dune Saga. It seems to remain a constant theme from the first novel to the last novel. Spice Melange and the Water of Life seem to be the things that unlocks these extraordinary abilities.
I have also read so many terms flown around that all seem connected to this idea and I was wondering what is the exact difference and distinction between all of these specific terms: Genetic Memory, Other Memory, Ego-Memory(ies), Pre-Born, Abomination and Possession. Is there a glossary or index we can create to adequately distinguish and explain all of these ideas and how they interconnect with one another?
BONUS: I am also trying to understand what happens to Alia in the third book. Her grandfather has been dead for nearly twenty years at that point in the novel and yet somehow he is “possessing” her. His personality seems to be the exact same as it was at the time of his death nearly two decades ago. Does that mean his consciousness from the past is possessing her in the present (since he no longer exists in the present due to being dead)? It comes across as almost literal magic to me.
