She totally had the hots for me. Did you see her wink at me!?

[–]phinbar 85 points86 points  (6 children)

No, she was winking at me!

[–]Clockwork_Medic 39 points40 points  (4 children)

Damn you both!

[–]fxx_255 20 points21 points  (3 children)

No no, I am the one standing behind everyone. She was winking at me.

Y'know, like when someone you don't know waves at you, so you awkwardly wave back, but they were waving at a person behind you?

Yeah, that's me

[–]Radius_314 22 points23 points  (2 children)

I had that experience in highschool. I was outside of some class, and this pretty girl that I didn't know waved my way. I confusedly waved back only for giggles to erupt as her friend walked past me. It still haunts me to this day.

[–]fxx_255 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've all been there my doode. Time to let that ghost go and laugh at it. We've all been there

[–]Amirax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, she was winking at me!
Phin, she was winking at me, she had her eye on my knee
Dog, I'm sorry she had her eye on my guns
Oh you loco, she was checking out my buns

No bro, she had an eye on me...
She had an eye on me!
How could she have an eye on both of us?
Wait a minute, you talking about that girl with a lazy eye?
I think she might had a slightly lazy eye!

[–]CazRaX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seent her first!

[–]RedStar9117 233 points234 points  (27 children)

I didn't know she was a dancer too....lovley

[–]digressnconfess 239 points240 points  (18 children)

her original dream was to be a prima ballerina! she even gave dance lessons to younger children. her height and lack of practice during the war are what stopped her.

[–]ramence 139 points140 points  (6 children)

I was so surprised when I first learned she was 5'7 - which is tall-ish now, but notably tall for a woman in the '50s. She's such a little thing that I'd just always assumed she hovered around the 5' mark.

As a lady who's a bit insecure about being taller than average, it was nice to find out. :)

[–]Icankeepthebeat 50 points51 points  (4 children)

5-7” was giant in the 50’s but doesn’t even rank for tall anymore. I’m 5’-10” and people say to me “oh yea I guess you are sort of tall” 😂. Seems like Americans get taller every year. The middle schoolers look like college kids.

[–]JoshJoshson13 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Interesting. Why are we getting taller? Hormones in the beef?

[–]Jrdirtbike114 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well.. our diet certainly doesn't lack calories or protein

[–]peacesrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’ and I’ve always been so self conscious about it

[–]Relo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5-7” Seems like Americans get taller every year.

As a 2m european dude, im glad i dont have to grow with you.

[–]snailsnoozers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She also made me less self conscious about my big feet! She famously wore ballet flats and reportedly bought her shoes a half size larger (America size 10½) so her feet would not look too squeezed.

[–]RudyRusso 44 points45 points  (4 children)

Hepburn performed silent dance performances to raise money for the Dutch resistance effort in 1942. A 2019 book by author Robert Matzen provided evidence that she had supported the resistance by giving "underground concerts" to raise money, delivering the underground newspaper, and taking messages and food to downed Allied flyers hiding in the woodlands north of Velp. She also volunteered at a hospital that was the center of resistance activities in Velp, and her family temporarily hid a paratrooper in their home during the Battle of Arnhem

[–]90Quattro 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hepburn was an amazing person by all accounts. She was an all time beauty and had the talent to boot. She could have easily been a self-serving jerk, but that just wasn’t who she was. I believe she did relief work in Africa after she quit acting. Hmm. Sit on my stacks and get fawned over or go halfway around the world to help other people? Fuck the Kardashians, those idiots aren’t fit to open the door for her.

[–]sixpackshaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Her service against the Nazis was far more important than her important Hollywood career.

[–]kthomaszed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

holy shit i had no idea. swoon

[–]siddharthbirdi[🍰] 53 points54 points  (2 children)

Lack of practice and the long term physical effect of the malnutrition she suffered through the Dutch Famine during the liberation of Netherlands.

[–]sixpackshaker 10 points11 points  (1 child)

When my mother learned of her malnutrition during the war, she stopped being jealous of her thinness.

[–]dorkydragonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read in a biography of her that her family dug up tulip bulbs from the yard to eat as that was the only thing available.

[–]mogaman28 38 points39 points  (0 children)

She gave secret ballet recitals (to the Germans) during the war. The ticket money going to the Dutch resistance.

[–]RedStar9117 27 points28 points  (1 child)

A world war seems like a pretty good excuse for missing training....well im glad she got to be a great actress if she couldn't be a ballerina. Hollywood legend

[–]Practice_NO_with_me 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's a totally valid excuse but ballet basically requires that you shape your muscles, tendons and bones and stuff as you are growing. If you miss out on that critical window 🤷 She was ~11 when the war started and ~16 when it ended.

[–]Pilot0350 46 points47 points  (1 child)

She never really considered herself to be an actress and when asked she'd say she was a dancer first. I highly recommend reading Dutch Girl. Audrey Hepburn was one of the most incredible women in history and it's sad to me that she is mostly only known for a few movies and not her decades of humanitarian work or her help in funding the Dutch resistance during wwii and all the other incredible things she did.

[–]morvus_thenu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it make you feel any better I do believe more people are aware of her decades of humanitarian work than you think. Which is good, because she was just... good. Adorable and good. Or maybe adorable because she was so good — they go hand-in-hand.

[–]ddei989 8 points9 points  (1 child)

She trained as a ballerina when she was younger and even did secret performances to raise money for the Dutch underground during WW2. She was very talented and may have even been a professional had the war not effected her training.

[–]squigster037 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The long term effects of starvation are pretty awful.

[–]skexzies 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Same here. I had no clue she could dance that well. Impressive.

[–]Select-Sample-4022 10 points11 points  (1 child)

She dances in the movie Funny Face with Fred Astaire

[–]squigster037 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite movies growing up.

[–]userlesslogin 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Some people have that look that’s so perfectly disarming, it’s dangerous.

[–]Dracenduria 23 points24 points  (0 children)

She is one of my favorite actresses and you can never convince me she is not a member of the elven race.

[–]tequilavip 112 points113 points  (3 children)

That wink. 👌👌

[–]pietaster999 173 points174 points  (19 children)

Describe her in one word. I'll go first:

Delightful

[–]Pasargad[S] 55 points56 points  (6 children)

Audrey Hepburn

Classic

[–]getyourcheftogether 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Dead

[–]Itsasecret9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh...you are morbidly correct.

[–]disturbedsoil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Laughing, myself included. 70. How old are the rest of us who watched her?

[–]ceeceeblack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Perfection.

[–]enzo_baglioni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hepburnesque

[–]alpha914 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After all that spinning? Dizzy

[–]leggseggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exceptional

[–]fxx_255 7 points8 points  (2 children)

My forever crush

[–]vulfneck 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Describe her in one word.

[–]zAxioMatiCz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that all the comments are about her dancing. I am absolutely stunned by the incredible framing of every shot. Just incredible. The use of reflections, light and shadow, just all of it. What a feast.

[–]nasaglobehead69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

if I got a wink like that from a lady that pretty, I'd melt into a puddle before she could do her first spin

[–]PitTitan 41 points42 points  (2 children)

Everybody's talking about Audrey Hepburn and I'm trying to figure out why Jimmy Carr is creeping at the door.

[–]LogaShamanN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How about the camera cutting to a woman who looks really concerned about the dancing?

[–]AngryHumanoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Creepy seal laughter noises intensify"

[–]Soft-Lingonberry345 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That woman plays the piano very well.

[–]naivemarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a complete amateur, although I know it requires less skill, I prefer Freddie Mercury metronome style to silent movie frequent tempo change, at least for dancing.

[–]Adeno 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Audrey is one of the most beautiful people who ever existed. Her face should appear next to the definition of beauty.

[–]morahman7vn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Today I learned, Audrey Hepburn was Dutch.

[–]neon_overload 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Audrey Hepburn in a leotard winking at me does strange things

[–]vs-1680 48 points49 points  (5 children)

This seems like a super early example of fourth wall breaking. Mesmerizing

[–]Xeynobrand 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Pretty sure she is winking at the woman in the chair next to the piano who sees her wink and reacts to it through the mirror.

[–]JoshJoshson13 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No stfu she's winking at me

[–]neon_overload 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ostensibly so, except she looks and winks directly to camera - if the angle was correct for her to be winking at the woman, we would see the camera in the mirror.

Of course, they angled the mirror so that the camera wasn't visible (the reflection of camera and crew would be to the right of that woman, off screen) so they do seem to have added in winking directly to camera as a cheeky fourth wall thing.

[–]Trick_Importance8181 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure thats been going on since the silent era

[–]Vitalstatistix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“You ain’t heard nothing yet!” ushering in the new era was obviously an audience wink too.

[–]Free-Stable-8539 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She’s a maniac, maniac on the flooooor!!!

[–]Mr_YUP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man old school entertainers really could do it all. Sing, dance, and act were minimums that they all had to have. Even now I’m sure a lot of people would be surprised how well their favorite actors could sing and dance.

[–]metrogypsy 38 points39 points  (2 children)

so fun to watch. She is definitely trained, but far from a pro. she looks like how I would if I were to “dance around” 15 years after stopping serious ballet. very loosey goosey and kind of half-out, which I really kind of love.

[–]squigster037 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah. That's because she trained the go pro until she was 16 when the Nazis tried to starve the Dutch into submission. They were digging up tulip bulbs to survive. After so much muscle waisting, her body was ruined for professional dancing. Which is when she started acting.

[–]kthomaszed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she would have been if not for the war. look her up she did incredible things.

[–]Moosetappropriate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obviously she retained a lot of her early training.

[–]dirkdisco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So beautiful....

[–]JohnnyGFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My lifelong crush on Audrey Hepburn continues.

[–]SonOfZaknafein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She actually had some ballet chops.

[–]maeta123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wink! I wish I could pull this off IRL

[–]tidytibs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Amazing footwork! I am glad she was able to do this herself. I cannot imagine who she learned from but I bet they were strict!

[–]Tenprovincesaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was a dancer before she was an actress.

[–]dirtythirty1864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lovely woman and great actress, her costars were cringy and ruined most of her movies for me.

[–]stepdownblues -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was a bold choice to cast James Spader as her mom, seated by the piano, seen clearly at 0:16. Wouldn't have thought to do that.

[–]DBH114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was a delicate flower.

[–]Antha1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was a delicate flower!

[–]airbrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what horrors she experienced working in Hollywood.

[–]neopanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute class. Looking at this year’s Oscars, you realize how low we have dipped…

[–]spazmcgee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always amazes me seeing old films of people dancing ballet since it has changed so much since then

[–]WuTang360Bees -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d put it in her butt

[–]milkshakakhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want that old lady’s outfit.

[–]ObnoxiousTwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hnnnnnnng....

[–]adamhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not realize she was a ballerina.

[–]minibini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The woman next to the pianist looks like an older Evelyn Nesbit.

[–]SteiNlolGateS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no reflection of the camera 😵

[–]GoofBall92 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does anyone know what song that is? I want to learn it on piano!

[–]Equivalent_Alps_8321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't know she was a ballerina

[–]dirkkrymer369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a beauty❤
