What baseball contracts were initially mocked and ridiculed but then turned out to be worth every penny? by RobotYoshimis in baseball

The Mo Vaughn worked out kind of ok since they dumped the worst years of it on the Mets and Kevin Appier was a contributor to the 2002 team (though was pretty bad in the playoffs admittedly).

And there was so much salary inflation around 2005-07 that his contract was a bargain for the last couple years before he opted out.

I feel like Kent is going to be like Trammell and McGriff- not a lot of traction with the writers, but goes in on the first opportunity with the VC.

10,000,000 or the chance to serve these people? by Machinefun in facepalm

I think the one with his back turned is Abraham Lincoln. Republicans love pointing out they’re the party of Lincoln, though it is a little odd to have one historical figure among a bunch of present day folks.

I read that he got suspended for mentioning on the broadcast that the Orioles are 29th out of 30 teams in payroll and ownership got mad at him for informing the fans that they’re cheapskates.

I irrationally hate microstates. Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, the Vatican, Liechtenstein, and you’re on thin ice Luxembourg. Singapore as well, not pictured. What other microstates around the world are you aware of? And why do these European microstates even exist? by LoganLikesYourMom in geography

[–]DodgerWalker 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you consider population then you'd probably have to exclude Singapore. Singapore has 5.6 million people which might not sound like a lot but it's more than some pretty large countries geographically. E.g. Mongolia has 3.2 million people.

2005, basically an everything that could go wrong did that year. It did ultimately lead to drafting Kershaw, though.

If we’re going back, I’ll give a shout-out to Hong Chi Kuo. Other than Gagne at his peak, there was no one I trusted more than Kuo circa 2008.

ELI5: How exactly does a person "die of age"? Also how do the medical professionals determine whether a death person died of age or not? by veselin465 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DodgerWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US at least, old age or natural causes are not valid for a death certificate. Typically those people are listed under heart disease since if they don’t know, then heart failure is the most likely proximate cause of death

Beyond may taste more similar to real meat, but I prefer Morningstar

According to Statcast's Outs Above Average, the Padres have been the best defensive team in baseball (+27 OAA as a team), while the Brewers are the team that has been most victimized by good defense while at-bat (+24 OAA while hitting). by TriviaWhiz in baseball

[–]DodgerWalker 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Makes me think Fenway Park is screwing with the data somehow, like if the doubles off the green monster that would be flyouts elsewhere are coded as bad defense. But OAA should take the dimensions of the park into account.

Edit: Reading other comments on this page, sounds like Fenway is a culprit here.

How many consecutive losing seasons would it take for baseball fans to feel bad for the Yankees? by CricketIsBestSport in baseball

[–]DodgerWalker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be generations. Different sport but the Cowboys haven’t even been to a conference title game in over 25 years and they’re still seen as a common bandwagon team and never lost the “America’s Team” brand.

Is the intention of Intercosmos to give the USSR 2 additional influence in every non-battleground where they already have influence? That could be a ton of influence added across the board. If not, then you need to reword that card.

could someone analyze this for me? by SmartChungus in TextingTheory

[–]DodgerWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got one of those once. Gal pretended to be texting someone else she met on an online dating site. I told her that I wasn't that guy but I was single. After a little bit of back and forth, she sent me a topless photo, then said if I sent her a dick pic, she'd sext me back. I just thought "lmao, I'm not that stupid" and never messaged her again.

I get these types of messages a lot and usually ignore them. But what exactly is the scammer trying to do? Like start up a conversation and then eventually ask for money? Or is simply getting a response to verify the number belongs to a real person what they're after?

Malaysia is 61% Muslim, but I was just there and there’s loads of pork available. Though there the majority of the non-Muslim population is of Chinese descent (also a substantial proportion of Indian descent) and pork is a big part of Chinese food.

The case for Jared Goff by Detroit5g in fantasyfootball

Goff had pretty big home/road splits last year. If I don’t get an elite guy at QB, I’d consider getting Goff later, playing him in home games and streaming matchup picks when he’s on the road

Recreational weed is now legal in Minnesota: What to know by ancient_mariner63 in news

Wisconsin finally gets a liberal supreme court majority today. There should be a case soon challenging that the districts were illegally gerrymandered, thus leading to a new map where a Dem majority is possible. But it’s a 50/50 state so with the new map, control would be a toss-up in 2024 (as opposed to safe Republican with the current map).
