The beautybrains did an article about this once - that some protein treatments will not contain as much of the other conditioners so I think you are right. I think it is likely that when people say it made their hair crunchy, that their hair was already 'crunchy' (hence using the treatment), and it wasn't the right product for them.

Regardless if the particular product is any good for your hair, there are myths out there that too much protein will cause hair to harden and become brittle, which is not true.

Think that was from a korean study? If I remember right, the damage is caused by tension as the hair can absorb a lot of water and how it causes the hair swell. Heat styling causes a diffent type of damage so blowdrying with cool air could be a good idea.
