For some reason when I saw the post title and the photo I thought this was going to have durian in it.

London got voted sadest city in Canada? by TheBraveTabby_ in londonontario

[–]etgohomeok 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, some real estate firm came up with a long list of arbitrary metrics that they decree to be representative of "happiness" and scored cities based on them without sharing their methodology, rationale, or source data. It's just clickbait nonsense.

There's a machine in Covent Garden to validate the underground parking, I think 1 hour free at most times?

For a 2-bedroom 1000 sq.ft. house with a hot tub and gas furnace, average $200/month for London Hydro and $150/month for Enbridge Gas, fluctuates quite a bit from month to month depending on usage as well as seasonally.

What's your plan? by ImOnRedditHarHar in FidoMobile

Black Friday plan ($30/20GB for my line and $25/20GB for my wife's line).

Why speculate about how much data is good for your needs when you can easily just check your data usage to see if you have too much?

Pixel Tablet will be available on June 20 by betterpasta in GooglePixel

[–]etgohomeok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phone + desktop PC cover the vast majority of my use cases, the only reason to have something in-between is to have a mid-size screen I can take with me (eg. for web browsing/media on airplanes), in which case a tablet is cheaper and more portable (and better battery life?) than a laptop.

If you worked 100% remotely and could move anywhere in Canada, where would you live? by vesieco in PersonalFinanceCanada

Sure but in this context OP already has a remote job so they wouldn't need it for work.

Practically speaking you'd be fine in Montreal with only English.

It's the -20° wind chills that you need to prepare for.

Does my plan make sense? by adorn93 in Aeroplan

[–]etgohomeok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that partner seats show up much closer to departure, but you're going to have to be completely flexible when it comes to airline, routing, and exact date.

To test this theory I checked flights leaving 1-21 days from today and I’m not seeing anything but it could just be because they’re getting snatched up quickly.

Search within the next 4 days and look at options that route via Seattle.

What is with these Pittsburgh lefts? by mooregatehoe in londonontario

[–]etgohomeok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a possible explanation other than "London drivers bad"

There are some intersections in London where there is an advance green but it doesn't turn when you expect it to. From what I can gather, it seems like they alternate which axis of traffic gets the advance on each light cycle (eg. North/South gets the advance every other cycle, East/West gets it on the off cycles). Richmond/Oxford and Highbury/Oxford are some examples.

So you'll be at an intersection where there is a physical advance light and you've gotten an advance at that exact intersection before, and when the lights turn green for you, it takes a moment to realize you don't have an advance this time.

Still dangerous and not excusable, but people make mistakes and most of them aren't selfish assholes all the time.

Recommended gyms? by LiteFrost in londonontario

[–]etgohomeok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just looking for cardio machines, take your pick of any of the budget gyms (Fit4Less, Planet Fitness, Crunch, etc.) in your area.

Honestly though it's gonna be nice outside real soon so why pay for a gym membership when you can burn calories outside for free?

Can you be more specific about what your needs are? Gym recommendations are very different for someone who just wants a treadmill to run on vs. someone who wants to attend fitness classes vs. a powerlifter.

Decent Hotel? by Ridgewood2016 in londonontario

[–]etgohomeok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check Google Maps ratings, opinions about downtown London will be a lot less skewed than they are on this subreddit.

Generally speaking anything owned by Marriott or Hilton will be nice since they have standards to maintain. I haven't stayed in any of them since I live here but I've been told by avid world travelers that the Delta is their preferred property in London.

Healthier/healthish take out food suggestions by joshmusik in londonontario

[–]etgohomeok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define healthy, fast food is actually the best if you're on a diet because you can look up the exact nutritional information about everything on the menu.

A lot of "health" food places that aren't required to post nutritional information can actually have a massive amount of calories and be loaded with sodium without you even knowing it.

3Gbps is nuts for residential lol, you would need really expensive LAN equipment to not be throttled locally. Even my Ubiquiti stuff only does gigabit.

Start.ca if you want a local company with good service (yes they've been acquired by Telus but they're still operating independently, at least for now).
