"The world of astronomy has been dazzled, nevertheless. Among the objects caught in the telescope’s giant mirror is one that turns out to be the oldest known galaxy in the universe. The prosaically named JADES-GS-z13-0 appears as it did a mere 320m years after the big bang, long before the creation of our own planet. It also turns out to be tiny compared with our own galaxy, yet it was clearly creating new stars at a rate comparable to the Milky Way."
My question is, let's imagine that humans had evolved 320m years earlier and pointed a JWST at the skies. What would this mean in terms of what we could see of this early galaxy?
I roughly get that the universe is expanding etc. but it follows, for me at least, that the universe must be very much larger or older than we think. All we need is a better telescope, and then we will see further back in time. But there must be some events in the universe that we will never be able to view, because the light that they emitted reached us long ago. So how can we ever know the true age of the universe?
Is the big bang just another name for a kind of event horizon, where we are not able to see any further back in time?
