I'm not writing off expats :) I'd be one myself. Just want to find different ways of experiencing Singapore other than being a NYC/London hybrid in the centre of SEA. I'll be surrounded by expats quite substantially through work anyway.

I've been to the hawker centre at Bukit Timah before, and I thought the food there was pretty good. I'll be staying around that area for a while, but I'd also like to get out and about and see the rest of the city.

Also, I don't mean anything bad by mainstream, it's just a word. Don't want to come across as pretentious or anything, but I couldn't think of a better term for what I was trying to say. Thanks for the advice anyway!

R/singapore tends to be pretty helpful, but for some reason I submit one post where the word mainstream appears in the title and everyone wants to label me a hipster. It's kind of funny. I don't mean it in the hipster sense. I loathe hipsters. I mean it in the "Londoners don't hang out at Westminster Abbey" sense.

I'm moving to Singapore and I want to know what the cool places to hang out are, and what places to avoid if I don't want to be surrounded by tourists all the time.

EDIT: I've been to the Night Safari before. It was enjoyable but not really something I think helps integrate one into Singaporean society. I just want to find the best way of settling in once I get there. I don't think hanging around a lot of tourists or Western catered places will help me do that.

There is some rampant downvoting going on in this thread towards anything that just vaguely supports Apple. I think you make a good case. And even if Apple's claim was dismissed, I think what people are trying to argue is that the claim itself was frivolous and groundless, which it clearly wasn't. Just because they lost doesn't mean they're retarded. Companies sue each other for shit like this all the time.

Being accused of tax evasion doesn't really mean much unless you're actually ordered to appear in court. If Eto'o was ordered to appear, no doubt a bigger shit storm would have rained down upon the footballing world than has happened.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to discredit you or undermine journalists, it's just there seems to be general misconception in society about legal terminology. Just thought I would help clear up some issues.

Of course civil and criminal violations are different. Both can land you in court however, and both are considered illegal. Misrepresentation in contract law is illegal; it is not criminal (at least to a certain degree).

I'm not really too concerned with what journalists think. I'm more concerned with what lawyers and legal professionals say, and I think it's pretty clear as a recent master of laws graduate that both criminal and civil violations are considered illegal.
