Automation is exactly what is scary about this future with AI... Eventually there will be an arms race of AI as it becomes competent and strong enough at strategic decision making there will be a point at which we must relinquish control to it as no human will be able to keep up with AI weaponry. Both sides will end up handing the reigns over to the AI to fight the battles. That's the tipping point at which we will see exponential growth of warfare as the AI work to out compete each other, and we lose all control else lose the war.

I get what you are saying but i don't think WFH would have an affect such as you say if our cities were not designed the way they are. If we lived in walkable areas a work from home person would be able to take lunch at the local pub or cafe and participate with their community. So i am a software dev that works from home and i have no interest in going into an office but i have an incredible community through my hobbies and passions. I am a member of the local music scene as well as ride bikes with friends multiple times a week. I work with mostly older teammates with with families and young kids whom i share few commonalities. While some need that social network through work, anyone engaged with their community already and with a support network outside of work probably does not. Plus we have the opportunity to work at cafes and co-working spaces as well....

ELI5: Why did indigenous people in Canada, before colonization, establish tribes in such extreme land in the north (e.g Iqaluit)? by JohnnyHaldric in explainlikeimfive

[–]bedake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your question sort of starts with a misunderstanding with the precept of branching off with the intention to establish occupancy of a land.

Family groups naturally splintered as they grew and migrated into new areas. Initial colonization of the Americas was done by crossing the northern land bridge but this was done over generations. Over time kinship groups just settled in these areas and never left. As they entered more northern latitudes they adapted and prospered and before long generations only knew life in that area of the world. As long as they prospered and thrived and food was in abundance there was no reason to leave. So it's not so much a question of why they established themselves there, but rather they had always been there and why would they leave.

They are happy because they have communities. The US no longer has any form of community. Wealth brings addiction to our devices and social isolation. We have spent the last hundred years building our cities into sprawling car centric nightmares without green spaces or public spaces in general. Anytime i leave the US and return i am absolutely shocked at how few people i see outside walking around or riding bikes. We no longer have communities. Nobody is invested in their neighbors. All we have is neighborhoods of isolated individuals moving from their home to their car to their desk and back home again.

While everyone is doing a good job highlighting income disparity and poverty as reasons for depression I think we should also note that in the US we most neighborhoods are severely lacking in access to nature, green spaces, or communal spaces in general. This is especially so in poorer neighborhoods. As we've come to live in an increasingly digital era with digitally focused lives the lack of chance in-person encounters or participation in the public realm have continued to decrease. The cheapest forms of entertainment now are all digital. The access of convenience is a slippery slope that drops people further into isolation. So we are dealing with a multi faceted amplification of depressive forces. Financial insecurity, isolating city planning, and isolating forms of entertainment.

Prior to the internet age we had to socialize with intention but now social media and our phones act as a proxy of socialization and grants us superficial forms of interactions with our friends and family. Pair this with neighborhoods built around isolating cars and single family homes without any form of communal space and we have a population starved of attention, community, green-space and ultimately joy.

2010 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 144wb - 220,000 miles - MN - Fair price? by goodnightgoodknight in vandwellermarketplace

[–]bedake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i guess so? I was just thinking, blue book value is fair, and then whenever i sell random things online, i basically just expect to get about 30% of whatever i payed for it... Maybe a little higher, possibly but not preferably a little less. It's a crapshoot selling online, and i generally price to sell though... kinda depends on how new some of the stuff is, like if you had some brand new stuff in there I'd try to get more and factor that in prolly at like 60% the value or something. I say this as someone that doesn't buy or sell vans though

Whatever the blue book value is plus 30% of the value of whatever upgrades you threw into it.

What is a quintessential American experience that every tourist should have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This, the quintessential American experience is spending 75% of your free time alone in a car driving for every mundane task and the eating fast food alone from a drive through window. It’s wonderfully depressing being American.

Amazon employees stage walkout over return-to-office mandate, climate goals, and layoffs by thebelsnickle1991 in technology

Not just for the individual but for the planet. 2 x 20 miles a day x 260 days a year is 10,400 miles driven a year i am not doing. That's freeing up traffic on roads and reducing emissions. It is morally wrong to expect us to go into an office when we don't have to

Tech workers are sick of the grind. Some are on the search for low-stress jobs. by thebelsnickle1991 in technology

[–]bedake 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My company's layoffs mostly affected senior engineers, now they have mid level non seniors doing their jobs on even smaller teams. What used to be say a team of 9 with 2 seniors is now like 5 with zero. The business thinks it's going well so far and I'm sure they feel like geniuses for on cost cutting but there is no longer any tech stack experts and code quality enforcement essentially ceased. This is a fortune 500 company asking unseasoned engineers to architect new systems and they won't even see the problems for months or a year down the line.
