"Does it really rain all the time?" and other thought provoking queries.
I am a federal employee and have many options for healthcare through my employee portal. I got notice from my union to consider switching from blue cross blue shield to KP during our current open season since it’s now available to me as I just recently moved back to the area. My boyfriend used to work in healthcare and everyone he worked with raved about KP and their care and especially about how they treat their employees. A lot of people quit at his hospital to go there if they were given the option.
I was wondering if anyone who has used their services could offer me any insight? Thanks!
Also if it helps, I do currently have a couple continuous healthcare issues I need to find practitioners to help me with: allergies/asthma and some minor hormonal issues that I currently take medication for.
EDIT: I had no idea this would be such a polarizing topic!!

There was the other thread someone posted about the strike.
I wanted to follow up with the experience so far. As a KP employee, I’ve been out on the strike lines and here’s my experience so far as well as other information that has been presented to us:
My first time striking and I can definitely say it is a lot of work, and both mentally and physically exhausting.
The weather was in the 100+s all last week (I was on the line for 3 days).
There’s 5-6 different locations throughout the region that the strike lines are located at so our numbers tend to be staggered. I’ve seen different people from different clinics each day.
Have to remind ourselves the number of people at the strike line is not exactly a representation of our total numbers due to other factors (remote workers, drive time, etc.). Most of the strike locations are about 40 minute drive for me. And then others are also working other jobs.
It’s been estimated about 25% of our 2000+ union members have returned to work after 1 week of striking. We’re doing our best to stay strong.
It’s actually quite telling that Kaiser has not offered to meet at the bargaining table. Everyday we’re out, they are losing money from patients not attending appointments, and they are also being fined by the state for patients being out of access. And they’re choosing not to care. Not only that, they also are facing fines from the contracted psychiatric hospitals (most of them require a follow up appointment within 3 business days of being discharged from the hospital).
So yea it’s been quite something. I wouldn’t call it a vacation. As it’s unpaid and getting up to head to the line to chant and stand strong.
Hoping this ends soon. But I’m going to sit through this until the end or at least try to.
Any questions. feel free to ask. Will update as it goes. It’s quite an experience being active on the strike lines. But it definitely is empowering standing with 50-70 others knowing that for once (in my life) I’m not fighting management alone about pay, workload, care, etc.
Thinking of starting a part time here in an ambulatory office but unsure if it’s a safe place to work. I have read serval news articles regarding nurses protesting about safe ratios

A community for Northern Virginia -- Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Falls Church, Loudoun County, Prince William County, and the surrounding areas.
If you use Kaiser Permanente, you may have some slowness at pharmacies and with optometrists today. In Virginia and DC, they are having a one day strike to draw attention to demand better wages and more staff. Burnout is very high amongst healthcare workers, especially with staff shortages. The whole organization is doing a three day strike in other states (Oregon, California, Washington). Support your healthcare workers' rights! .
A subreddit for those who want to end work, are curious about ending work, want to get the most out of a work-free life, want more information on anti-work ideas and want personal help with their own jobs/work-related struggles.
Stationary Engineers Local 39 have been on strike against Kaiser Permanente hospitals since SEP. 18, 2021. Small union, so not a whole lot of exposure. We spent Thanksgiving on the strike line, and it’s looking more and more like we will be here for Christmas as well. Asking for a fair contract from a company sitting on 45 billion in cash reserves. We are only 700-750 people in all Northern California hospitals. We install and maintain all hospital infrastructure. Meaning all of the HVAC systems, electricity, back up electricity (emergency generators), plumbing, sewer, nurse call systems, MRI and CT scan machines, etc. Would love to get the same amount of publicity as John Deere and Kelloggs have gotten, but being so small of a number that isn’t realistic. Anyway, just wanted to vent on behalf of 700-750 other brothers and sisters caught up in the struggle of fighting for a fair contract. After working 24/7 throughout the entire pandemic and going into Covid positive rooms (before and after vaccination) it just doesn’t seem right to be so unappreciated or under appreciated. I know life isn’t fair, but with inflation at 6%+ and a contract offer of 1% annually for three years, it just feels insulting.
