Russian people may not be able to withstand "economic siege," experts say by dremonearm in worldnews

[–]gajbooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminder that it doesn't necessarily mean as much as you think for citizens. That all depends on if it becomes valueless for local purchases. In terms of food and oil, local Russian production is probably sufficient to prevent the worst. It will be a pain to get more advanced goods though, although China will definitely be willing to sell.

Depends on the changes of the government. If Russia coups Putin and then like splits into 3 different countries or something during the ensuing civil war, sanctions probably won't be meaningful for each of those countries individually.

The longer he goes without going nuclear, the less likely anyone is to actually be willing to fire nuclear missiles. Russian and US military personnel alike weren't willing to fire nuclear missiles during the height of the cold war.

what is something many people have but you would never consider buying? by plvtosvenvs in AskReddit

Ok, apparently they just *tried* to do that. They have since backpedaled.

If you're not technically inclined but want a really useful utility, look up X10 Home Automation. Smart switches from the 90s. Don't need wifi or internet, just a RF remote control.

If you're more technically inclined, you can look up ZigBee and Z-Wave automation plus a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant. Works like X10 but with way more features. Only accessible on your local wifi (unless you set it up otherwise) so it's more secure and doesn't rely on some crappy app or server (web browser).

As long as you never ever buy the official ones, you'll be fine. They sell "cartridges" that just unlock the software to make new patterns, and force you to have some of them online and pay for services to use the thing you already bought.

Edit: Apparently they walked this back, which is good, but it is bad that they even tried.

They're nice to set on the knead mode and stick pizza dough in them, then bake it yourself later. As for baking they're pretty terrible since it makes the entire bread an impenetrable crust.

Russia threatens 'serious military repurcussions' if Finland joins NATO by itSmellsLikeSnotHere in worldnews

[–]gajbooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a strange suspicion that a large number of the forces brought in are either inoperable or insufficiently supplied to advance meaningfully. There are apparently large portions of Russian forces hanging back. They've been carting in all these tanks from storage in Siberia and I've just been wondering how the hell they got them working so quickly. Maybe the answer is that they haven't and that they're just good decoys or spare part fodder.

They also seem to be suiciding in airborn divisions like lunatics against Kyiv, so I would guess they fear their supply lines failing, but also don't have enough for as much of a blitzkrieg as they would want you to think.

Russia declares war on Ukraine, flights suspended by Ketsetri in worldnews

[–]gajbooks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Russia is probably hoping through this that they can prove NATO is meaningless by incursions into some minor country while the ukraine war is going in. I hope it isn't proved worthless, or that would be a nightmare.

TIL there's a hypothesis the moon Phobos may cycle between being a moon and a ring system around Mars. It reaches the Roche limit and breaks up into rings then slowly reforms, getting smaller each time. We were just born in a time when it is a moon not a ring system. by Dakens2021 in todayilearned

[–]gajbooks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably what happens is it gets close enough, disintegrates, the lower orbiting parts get sucked onto Mars over time, then the upper ones re-combobulate themselves into a smaller moon without as much gravity difference. That being said, there are some doubts if it is possible. Deimos probably gets in the way too much.

You can literally just disable ads in the settings. It is a dick move to have added them in the first place, but they're 100% removable.

ELI5: why is it old black and white sitcoms still look crisp today and every sporting event filmed up until the 2000’s looks like it was shot with a potato? by MellyMel86 in explainlikeimfive

Some fans are actually using similar tech to try and upscale DS9. The problem is though it isn't really in high enough resolution to start with and algorithms can only go so far without adding weird nonsense artifacts to the scene that look worse than the blurriness.

New satellite images show advanced Russian military deployments in Belarus by scot816 in worldnews

They are calling Russia + Belarus "The Union State of Russia and Belarus". Belarus is de-facto a federal unit of Russia now.

They have already done that with corruption though. Why bother fighting when you can just absorb the government cronies into your system?

National parks (in the US) don't get any more snow than say, Canada, or anywhere else in the same area. They also claim the dish is more resilient against snow and bad weather, probably just because it is larger with greater power usage.

Can the steam deck run 3 monitors? by Tjesssthewii in SteamDeck

[–]gajbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for reference, the Displayport over USB-C bandwidth isn't the same as the USB-C bandwidth. The Steam Deck looks like it supports full Displayport 1.4 so it runs 32 Gbps outgoing. A lot of manufacturers seem to forget that DisplayPort multi-stream exists and don't even mention that it can be used so it's hard to know if they just forgot or that it really won't support more than 4 monitors (looking at you, Nvidia, and your terrible docs). Given that they have both a DisplayPort output and HDMI on the dock, I think it's safe to say that Valve has DisplayPort multi-stream enabled.

Enabling people's scummy business tactics just makes them bolder to try even more blatant ones. Using the internet is cancerous these days with ads and cookie banners and robot checks and popups and leaving the site overlays and requirements to enter email and adding to cart and inability to cancel online and fake download buttons and fake requirements you can decline and automatic software installers and opt-out telemetry and autoplaying videos and those annoying popup video players for crap you don't want and absolute tons of this utter crap they want to force on people to "reduce churn" and "serve relevant ads".

I'm guessing this is like their business tier internet and they're expecting state/national parks and campgrounds and stuff to purchase and reuse it, or like oil rigs or large ships eventually.

I haven't understood what rust is for by Linked_Punk in ProgrammerHumor

[–]gajbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have it automatically enforced in Rust. You also have pointer safety and thread safety automatically enforced. The language itself is also just brilliantly designed, unlike some of the quite horrible modern C++ kludge syntax they have to keep for backwards compatibility. Rust has the "match" syntax which is like "switch" but not cancerous, and Enums are basically type-safe unions. Most of the error handling is handled in return values through Enums as well which I find so much nicer than running a program only to find some stupid library function that throws easily handleable exceptions at runtime when you least expect them.
