England's Women's Super League kicks off!
The English league took a bit longer of a break compared to most other European leagues, but it's finally back! Chelsea are looking to defend their title while Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United will no doubt be in the hunt for the top spots as well. Bristol City is this season's promoted side, returning to the WSL after having been relegated at the end of the 2020–21 season.
Asian Games football tournament knockout stage (30th Sep. - 6th Oct.)
With the group stage having concluded near the end of September, the main event has begun! Will Japan be able to defend their title and win their 3rd overall? Or with the other past champs, China and North Korea, be able to add to their respective 3 time tallies?
2023 Copa Libertadores Femenina - (5th - 21st Oct.)
CONMEBOL's marquee club tournament returns for its 15th edition, with 16 clubs from 10 different nations coming to Colombia looking to win the crown of best club in South America. There have been 8 different champions in the tournament's 14 year history, though only three have been from outside of Brazil: Chile's Colo-Colo (2012), Paraguay's Sportivo Limpeño (2016), and Colombia's Atlético Huila (2018).
UEFA Women's Champions League qualification Round 2 - (Oct. 10-11 & 13-15)
Twenty-four teams enter, and only twelve move on to the group stage to join Barca, Lyon, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea. These ties are a home and home playoff, with the aggregate winner over two legs moving on.
Some notable ties are: Paris FC vs VfL Wolfsburg & Manchester United vs PSG.
A-League kicks off in Australia & New Zealand! (13th-15th Oct.)
The hosts of this summer's exciting World Cup see top flight action return. The league has hit 12 clubs with the reintroduction of Central Coast Mariners, who left the league before the 2010-11 season. This continues an expansion trend, with the league added 3 clubs in the last 3 seasons.
Sydney FC are looking to defend their double title of Premier (season) and Champion (post-season).
UEFA Champions League Group Stage draw (20th Oct.)
Barca, Lyon, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea will be joined by the dozen playoff winners from a week ago.
NWSL Play-off Quarter-finals (22nd Oct.)
The NWSL playoffs will begin on 22nd October, with the clubs ranked 3rd-6th facing off to see who will advance to the semi-finals, which are set for November 4th. The championship will be hosted in San Diego on November 11th.
At time of writing (23rd Sep.) NJ/NY Gotham (3rd) would host Washington Spirit (6th) and North Carolina Courage (4th) would host OL Reign (5th), with Portland Thorns (1st) and San Diego Wave (2nd) waiting in the semi-finals. That said, even last place Chicago Red Stars have 21 points, only 5 off of the last playoff spot. The last few weeks of the NWSL regular season will be something to see!
2023 Pan American Games Football tournament (22nd Oct. - 4th Nov.)
The first meeting of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL in the span of some months will start in Chile this month. As it stands Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Venezuela will represent CONMEBOL against USA (U19s), Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Mexico (replaced Canada, who withdrew from the tournament).
2024 CAF Women's Olympic qualifying tournament - Second Round - (23rd - 31st Oct.)
16 teams enter the 2nd of 4 rounds of Olympic qualifying. Zambia are hoping to continue on to repeat their performance ahead of the 2021 Olympics, while Nigeria, Cameroon, and South Africa would all like to see a return to the Olympic games.
2024 AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament - Second Round - (26th Oct. - 1st Nov.)
First round group winners India, Iran, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam are joined by the heavyweights who got a bye: Australia, Japan, China, South Korea, and North Korea* (North Korea were among the highest ranked teams in 2022 which decided the first round bye, but their lack a match played in the last 2 years saw them as the lowest ranked team for Round 2 team distribution).
The teams will be split into three groups of four, with the group winners and the best 2nd place team moving on to the third and final round of qualifying, a pair of home & away playoffs in February 2024.
UEFA Nations League continues - (26th - 31st Oct.)
After kicking off in September the Nations League continues on with the middle portion of the group stage. Depending on how results go, this could already decide who is promoted or relegated.
