All posts must be related to information technology (software, hardware, configuration, or the IT industry).
Newcomer and tech-support questions are welcome (for now), but you are expected to do your due-diligence before posting. Read https://meta.stackexchange.com/help/how-to-ask to understand what good questions are. Explain what you already know or have tried, or your post may be removed. Use the "help request" flair.
No (mere) advertising.
If you’re a developer or employee of a company that makes software, hardware, or IT services, you may post links/comments with the following rules: You must use the "self promotion" flair. You must clearly identify yourself, and stick around to answer questions. The post or link must be of a technical nature about the design of your project/product. Marketing (posts without technical and community engagement) is grounds for post removal and banning.
Refrain from repeatedly pushing traffic to personal or other sites. Per rule 3, limited self-promotion is permitted, but repetitive posting is grounds for all posts being removed. Inauthentic content, astroturfing, pure marketing (self promotion without substantive content or community engagement), and bots pretending to be people are always spam.
All surveys, fundraising and petitions must be approved by the Mods before submission.
Be nice and have fun. Don’t jump on people for making a mistake. Engage carefully with those who disagree. Flaming, gratuitous insults, or trolling will not be tolerated. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. You're free to tell someone they are wrong (about anything), and even use strong language - just be mature about it.
Don’t suggest violence or destruction as a means to an end. This includes DDOS-ing and other typical online weapons. Do not promote anyone or any group that relies on, endorses, or normalizes this kind of behavior. Do not advocate or teach breaking the law.
Use descriptive titles, not appeals for attention or misleading summaries. Use all applicable flair, tags, or other general categorizing labels.
Some blog and news sites will try high-jacking guides, tutorials, and explanation without contributing anything new. Always link to the original source, or to the most clear/detailed explanation of an issue. Add extra commentary/links in the comments if you need to.
Please don’t fuel conspiracy thinking here. Don’t try to spread FUD, especially against reliable or well respected developers. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Show credible sources.
Repeat offenses, egregious offenses, or combinations of several offenses at the same time are grounds for muting or banning.
All offenses are judged at the discretion of the mods. If you disagree with a decision, make a case. Insults and complaints will get you nowhere.
