Theres been a lot of talk about the Medical Department especially given our recent injuries. So, I looked at who was fired and the current Medical Department.

TLDR: The Caretakers have fired 7 medical staff during their tenure. They rehired 1 (Jose Calvarro on a 1/week basis) and hired 1 Sports Scientist and replaced the Medical Director of Physiotherapy. We have decreased our Medical Staff by 5 people not counting Jose Calvarro. Its not a shock we have more injuries considering our medical team has been gutted.

Edit: as some have been mentioning the conclusion that the sheer number of medical department staff is not necessarily the issue. Clubs like Arsenal have staff of 6. I think this is a great point. So, the number of medical staff cannot be said to be causing our injury issue, but, Imo, it appears correlated.

Under prior ownership, we had essentially 2 Club Doctors. We fired the main guy, Sean Carmody, and promoted Dimitrios Kalogiannidis to โ€œInterimโ€ Club Doctor, but havenโ€™t gotten a full replacement.

We fired 3 physiotherapist and only hired one replacement until the players force the hierarchy to bring back Jose Calvarro, but given he had signed a new contract he only works on Sundays.

We fired 1 sports scientist and hired a replacement.

We also replaced the Medical Director Physiotherapy who had been with the club since 2014.

Much like the rest of the club The Caretakers have gutted the Medical Department and from what I can gather have simply not replaced them. It is no wonder we are experiencing an unprecedented amount of injuries since the takeover. They have decreased the medical department by 4-5 people, depending on if you count Jose Calvarro.

Current (2 NEW):

  1. Dimitrios Kalogiannidis โ€“ Club Doctor (Hired: 7/1/2018 | Promoted: 9/30/22)

  2. Fearghal Kerin โ€“ Physiotherapist (Hired: 1/1/23) โ€“ NEW

  3. Jose Calvarro โ€“ Physiotherapist (Rehired: 1/1/23) โ€“ Pretty sure 1 day a week

  4. Chris Searle โ€“ Sports Scientist (Hired: 7/1/16)

  5. Steve Hughes โ€“ Medical Director Physiotherapy (Hired: 7/1/22) - NEW

Fired (7 | 1 rehired parttime):

  1. Sean Carmody โ€“ Club Doctor (7/1/20 to 9/30/22)

  2. Paco Biosca โ€“ Club Doctor (7/1/11 to 9/26/22)

  3. Anastasia Panossian โ€“ Physiotherapist (9/1/18 to 6/30/22)

  4. Jose Calvarro โ€“ Physiotherapist (7/1/16 to 8/31/22) (Rehired: 1/1/23)

  5. Jon Fearn โ€“ Physiotherapist (1/15/10 to 1/31/23)

  6. Ben Smith โ€“ Sports Scientist (7/1/18 to 1/13/23)

  7. Thierry Laurent โ€“ Medical Director Physiotherapy (8/15/14 to 9/27/22)

Net:

  1. Club Doctor โ€“ Minus 1

  2. Physio Therapist โ€“ Minus 1-2 (Calvarro 1 day a week)

  3. Sports Scientist โ€“ Minus 1

  4. Medical Director Physio therapy โ€“ Even

Edit: If others find other info otherwise. Let me know. Happy to post edits with corrections. I would like this to be as accurate as possible.

Edit2: Per the above, u/ironclaw85 noted the club did hire a consultant for outsourcing some of the Physio Therapy. Link to Article from ironclaw:

I did a little further digging and the club hired a firm called Remedy which is run by Freddie Murray. Although its hard to tell exactly what Freddie's involvement is as one article stated: "The new physiotherapy firm will help โ€˜to provide advisory services to the club,โ€™ and aid the players as well." Source

some other articles on Freddie: Article from Daily Mail around time of Hiring(yeah yeah daily mail sucks)

Another article from the Irish Times pre-dating Chelsea

Edit3: u/kw2006 asked about Man City. They have a medical department of 12. https://www.transfermarkt.com/manchester-city/mitarbeiter/verein/281
