"Too many people are in the Hall of Fame. Literally anybody can make the basketball hall." Discussion around the Basketball Hall of Fame on this sub is rarely super positive on the breadth of their selections, so I had an idea! What if r/NBA voted every year and set their OWN standards for the hall of fame. A little over a year ago, we started in 1960 with the election of George Mikan, before finishing up this week with Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony.
Before exploring exactly WHO was inducted, a few important rules and reminders of the system to keep in mind.
As much as I'd like it to be, this is not representative of the entire sub. For the most part, these posts floundered in new and gained minimal recognition. I'm just a sucker for the sunk cost fallacy.
Similarly, specific percentages are completely useless. I rank the players below by percentage... but there's so many other factors, pretty much nothing can be drawn from them.
The format is drawn ENTIRELY from the baseball hall of fame. Every player has up to 10 tries to be elected. If you get more than 75% on a vote, then you are inducted. If you get less than 5%, you drop off the ballot instantly. In between, you keep going until you hit year 10. After that point, you fall off no matter what.
Starting with 1990, a Veteran's Committee was added. Every other year, 10 players that fell off the ballot were given another chance- they had the same requirement, needing 75% for induction.

If you didn't get in your first couple tries on the ballot, you were in trouble. Tracy McGrady, Chris Mullin and Joe Dumars were the only players to be elected after their 4th time on the ballot.
The Veteran's Committee was similarly useless. Walt Bellamy and Chet Walker were the only ones elected via it, though Sidney Moncrief, Dave Bing and Spencer Haywood all fell JUST short.
As a whole, this list is comparable to a slightly expanded 75th anniversary team list. Every eligible player on that list was elected with the exceptions of Bing and Earl Monroe.
No player eligible for the ACTUAL hall of fame was elected to this one. Chauncey Billups was the closest, topping 60% a number of times.
This hall, of course, is much smaller than the real one. About 55 players in the real hall were NOT elected to this one.
Voters decided they did not care much about college or international accomplishments. This is illustrated most by Arvydas Sabonis, who struggled to get above 60%.
Every eligible MVP was inducted to this version of the hall.
Every finals winning team has an induction except the 1951 Rochester Royals and 1979 Seattle SuperSonics.
Every eligible finals MVP has been elected except Dennis Johnson, Cedric Maxwell and Chauncey Billups.
Every eligible 20k points scorer was elected except Antawn Jamison, Tom Chambers, Joe Johnson, LaMarcus Aldridge and Mitch Richmond.
Every player who has been an all-star at least eight times was inducted, with the exception of Larry Foust. 10 seven time all-stars did not make it.
The most hall of famers any team had was the 1960/1961 Celtics with 5- Russell, Heinsohn, Cousy, Sharman and Sam Jones.
The only franchises that did not have a Hall of Famer primarily play for them were the Pelicans, Hornets and Cavs. And depending on your evaluation of Pau Gasol, the Grizzlies.
