I'm not sure how they managed it but Funny or Die made a parody of Weird Al! This 2 minute video pokes fun at trailers and Al Yankovic at the same time. With Aaron Paul as Al and an all star cast (including Al -- pick him out) this short is just plain fun.Funny or Die mostly makes satire, but this is just over the top fun or any Al Yankovic fan! It's well acted, directed and technically well done. Not all Funny or Die videos are... It made me laugh out loud, but now I know how Al got weird.. :-) That's enough for me to give it 5 stars.

No doubt, Weird Al fans will enjoy this bio-pic parody of Al’s life. The cast seemed to be in on the joke, and notable characterizations included David Radcliffe as Al, Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, and Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento. The movie also included many guest appearances and identifiable impersonations. In addition, the bonus features are worth watching.

For the fringe fan, like me, the movie was enjoyable, though the laughs weren’t as often, and as hard as other reviews have described. My standard for over-the-top comedy and farcical humor is that of the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker projects like "Police Squad!" (1982) and "Airplane!" (1980). I thought the set-ups and jokes of "Weird" were funny, but the dialogue could have been more consistently satiric and extreme. With that said, "Weird" had its moments and I enjoyed the film. I appreciate a comedy that includes obvious parodies and send-ups, as well as carefully crafted nuances that require the viewer to pay close attention. If you like MTV videos from the 80’s, "Police Squad!", and "Spinal Tap", you’ll like this movie.

Been a Weird Al fan since I was a kid; had all the albums, watched the videos on MTV, saw him on tour four times (his band is amazing, by the way), etc. This "I swear it's all true" biography of the man gives you the story of his life, as only the master of parody could tell it. I hesitate to give anything away, so just expect the unexpected. Daniel Radcliffe nails in the lead role. Watch for the many cameos throughout the film (the pool party scene is a riot, trying to figure out who's who). No profanity to speak of ( a rarity nowadays), but some over the top, played for laughs violent moments. Make some popcorn, kick back and get ready for the "untold story" of Weird Al Yankovic!

If you’re a fan of Weird Al; this is a must see movie. We definitely loved it!

If you’re not a Weird Al fan, you should probably consult with a psychiatrist. 🙂

Im September 2022 feierte das parodistische Filmbiopic Weird: Die Al Yankovic Story von Regisseur Eric Appel mit Daniel Radcliffe in der Hauptrolle, beim Toronto International Film Festival seine Premiere. Anfang November wurde der Film anschließend in den USA ins Programm des Roku Channels aufgenommen. Am 30. Juni 2023 gab es dann die deutschsprachige Premiere des komödiantischen Biopics auf Blu-ray und DVD. Doch ob die Komödie aus meiner Sicht eine Empfehlung darstellt oder der parodistische Einschlag dem Biopic-Konzept über den hierzulande nicht ganz so bekannten Musiker und Parodisten «Weird Al» Yankovic schadet? Das möchte ich nun jedenfalls in meiner nachfolgenden Kritik klären.

Bekanntheit erlangte «Weird Al» Yankovic vor allem dank seiner humorvollen Songs, mit denen er die Musikindustrie parodistisch auf die Schippe nimmt. So entstanden vor allem in den 80ern zu vielen großen Hits nicht viel später auch Parodien von Weird Al Yankovic, die den Originalen zu noch mehr Erfolg verhalfen. Darunter zählen Songparodien wie Another One Rides the Bus (1981), Eat It (1984) oder Fat (1988). Leider blieb Al im deutschsprachigen Raum allerdings weitgehend unbeachtet und konnte auch in den USA erst 2014 sein erstes Nummer-eins-Album verbuchen. Seine zahlreichen Parodien sind dennoch absoluter Kult und Teil der US-amerikanischen Popkultur geworden.
Das Biopic beginnt dabei nach einer wilden Einstiegsszene wie oft üblich mit seiner Kindheit.
Aufgewachsen bei seinem jugoslawisch-stämmigen Vater und seiner italienisch-stämmigen Mutter, verspürt Al schon bald ein musikalisch brodelndes Feuer in sich. Diesem kann er dank einem Akkordeon, das er überraschend erhält, Ausdruck verleihen.

Dabei stösst er erstmal noch auf wenig Beachtung seiner Eltern hinsichtlich seiner musikalischen Ambitionen. Sie wollen, dass er wie sein Vater völlig normal zur Arbeit geht. Doch seine künstlerischen Überzeugungen bahnen ihren schicksalhaften Weg. Nach dem Auszug von Zuhause geht es dann erstmal aufs College. Dort findet er Gleichgesinnte, die ihn unterstützen. Er möchte dabei vor allem bereits populäre Songs mit neuen Texten verbinden. Als er dann eine Kassette seiner Parodie auf My Sharona von The Knack unter dem neuen Titel My Bologna, einem lokalen Radiosender einsendet und der auf Parodien fokussierte Radiomoderator Dr. Demento Kontakt mit ihm aufnimmt und den jungen Künstler fördert, folgt mit einem bald darauffolgenden Plattenvertrag, eine Erfolgsserie, die nicht mal er selbst vorhersehen konnte. Doch Al möchte schon bald mehr als ein Künstler der musikalischen Wiederverwertung sein.

Passend zum Künstler wählt Weird: Die Al Yankovic Story jedenfalls eine außergewöhnlich humoristische Mischung aus Realität und Fiktion, um erstmal biografische Infos über Al einzustreuen, die dann wiederum in den nächsten Momenten in surreale Höhenflüge abdriften.
Dabei werden auch bewusst tatsächliche Fakten spielerisch verdreht, um damit womöglich die parodistische Wirkung zu verstärken und eine Art alternative Geschichte über Al zu erzählen. So wird u.a. Eat it anstelle von Michael Jacksons Beat It zum Original verklärt. Diese humoristisch biografische Verdrehung findet schließlich auch zum Ende des Films, seinen schwarzhumorigen Höhepunkt.
Vieles wird ausserdem deutlich überspitzt dargestellt. Dabei ist so manche Maske der Schauspieler möglicherweise bewusst künstlich angelegt worden. Angefangen bei John Deacon und letztendlich auch bei Al’s Mutter, die mit ihrem späteren Fatsuit wie eine Cartoonfigur wirkt.
Der Film selbst nimmt sich ausserdem auch nie ernster als Al selbst, der sich darüber hinaus als Produzent, Drehbuchautor und Nebendarsteller in sein Biopic mit einbrachte und damit auch spürbar selbst inszenierte.

Die Kamera befindet sich meist unmittelbar im Geschehen und passt sich auch bzgl. der Kameraführung immer der Gefühlslage des Hauptdarstellers an. So bekommen wir zu Beginn direkt eine stürmische Szene aus dem Krankenhaus präsentiert, die uns auch nochmal im späteren Verlauf einholt. Diese zeigt sich sehr unruhig, während dialogorientierte Szenen sehr ruhig gehalten sind.
Schauspielerisch kann Daniel Radcliffe überzeugen, der genügend Energie mitbringt, um auch die verrücktesten Momente erstklassig und mit den Mitteln der Parodie zu spielen. Vor allem in den musikalischen Momenten kann er dabei mit vielen Ohrwürmern aus Al’s musikalischen Schaffen punkten. Ebenfalls großartig ist Toby Huss in der Rolle des Vaters Nick Yankovic, der sowohl den Unsympath als auch Sympath mit einer enormen Authentizität zu verkörpern weiss. Das ist in diesem Fall auch enorm wichtig, da er als Schlüsselfigur, eine tragende Rolle spielt.

Fazit: Weird: Die Al Yankovic Story ist ein bewusst abgehoben inszeniertes parodistisches Filmbiopic zwischen Realität und Fiktion, dass sowohl an der verdrehten Wahrheit als auch seiner verrückt aufspielenden Hauptfigur Spaß hat. Schauspielerisch bietet der Film dabei für eine Komödie erstklassige Leistungen. Der parodistische Einschlag und die damit erfrischend unkonventionelle Erzählweise passen außerdem wie die Faust aufs Auge, da man dem hier porträtierten Künstler mitsamt seiner Selbstinszenierung und seiner Lebensphilosophie mehr als gerecht wird. Da möchte man letztendlich nur hoffen, dass Al mit diesem Biopic auch im deutschsprachigen Raum an Popularität dazu gewinnt.
