Last week I found an old copy of 'Doctor Who - the movie' (1996) sitting in a box and decided to rewatch it for the first time in many years. I know the movie itself is not rated very highly, but as far as pure entertainment value goes, I had an absolute blast watching this again - loved it from start to finish in all it's mid-90's cheesiness. The music is gripping, and I still think that was the best the TARDIS had ever looked.

But most importantly of all - Paul McGann's performance. All I can say is: Wow!

Re-watching this movie- seeing his performance as the 8th Doctor, was a mix of pure joy and crushing sadness over the fact he never went on to have his own TV series. In my opinion, his costume and whimsicle performance in this movie gave us one of the best depictions of the doctor - ever. Some may disagree with this - but at the time that movie came out in 1996, I think he was the strongest portrayal of the Doctor since Tom Baker.

Watching this movie has re-ignited my interest in the 8th Doctor, and the general subject of why Paul McGann was never given his own series. As far as I can tell - he's always seemed ready and willing to take part in Doctor Who. It's beyond tragic that he hasn't been given a series! The Night of the Doctor was absolutely incredible, but it's just not enough.

I had never listened to any of the Big Finish audios before - so now I've begun to listen to the ones featuring the 8th Doctor. This will no doubt become my next Doctor Who obsession. The one's I have listened to so far are amazing- but it doesn't quite replace seeing an actual TV series starring McGann.

If the BBC can't do it, I just wish the fans could somehow get together and crowdfund something - even if it was just a small mini-series. I guess this can't be possible for copyright reasons.

It just feels like such a waste that he will likely have no further significant on-screen performances as the 8th Doctor.
