What actually happened was that one of Hamas' founders, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, had founded a charity (under the Mustlim Brotherhood banner) called Mujama al-Islamiya in the 1970s. Israel recognised this as a valid charity. HAMAS was not founded until 1987 and wrote its anti-Semitic charter in 1988. The Israelis only "founded" or "helped found" HAMAS in as far as a security incident at a checkpoint inflamed two men who started it.
