Rob Reiner doesn't get enough attention as a director. He made 6 classics in an 8-year-span, which is insane.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone post about Rob Reiner on r/movies. Look at this tear he went on in his first 8 years of directing films:

SPINAL TAP (1984) - probably invented the mockumentary genre STAND BY ME (1986) - perhaps the best coming of age film THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) - universally beloved and endlessly quotable WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) - considered the greatest rom-com of all time MISERY (1990) - one of the best King adaptations and won Kathy Bates an Oscar A FEW GOOD MEN (1992) - one of the best courtroom dramas, nominated for Best Picture, and put Aaron Sorkin on the map

I think Reiner is one of the best directors of actors ever -- his films are full of outstanding performances and memorable moments: "You can't handle the truth", "My name is Inigo Montoya...", "This one goes to eleven", "I'll have what she's having."

Why do you think he's not discussed as one of the greats?

In the Princess Bride (1987), you can see a replica of the hat that Rob Reiner wore in This is Spinal Tap (1984). It was included because Rob Reiner wanted Mark Knopfler to compose the movie’s music, but he would only agree to do it if the hat appeared as an easter egg.

From 1884-1992 Rob Reiner made This Is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men. Since then, his output has been largely panned, what happened?

Is there something I'm missing? The Bucket List (2007) made money, but wasn't received well, and it looks like that's about the most successful movie he's put out since the 90's. Not only that, but it looks like critics have pretty much torn everything he's made since then to shreds. I'm mostly surprised that he still seems quite active, but the quality of his output seems to be drastically weaker than the classics he used to pump out yearly. John Carpenter is another director I can think of whose career seemed to fizzle in the 90's. Any thoughts on this subject?

UPDATE: What are your favorite incorrect director timelines? I could delete this thread, or we could talk about the influence Zack Snyder had on George A. Romero's Day of the Dead, idk.

Mark Knopfler refused to write the score to The Princess Bride unless director Rob Reiner would include a homage to his previous film, This is Spinal Tap. Reiner used the hat he wore in TiST which can be seen in the grandsons room during the opening scene

Rob Reiner deserves to be considered one of the finest directors to ever attempt the craft. Here's why.

Rob Reiner made an indelible print on popular culture. He had one of the greatest stretches of films that one can imagine; he directed classic comedy and family films that are still regarded as the top of their genres today, including Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally in a five year span. As he matured as a director, he transitioned to more serious pieces such as A Few Good Men, The American President, and Misery with ease.

I don't think enough is said of his career. He brought out the best in his actors, crew, and genre.
