Peter Falk, best known as TV's COLUMBO, an unforgettable character actor remembered for dozens of roles in movies from the late 1950s on, e.g. THE GREAT RACE (1965), THE IN-LAWS (1979), WINGS OF DESIRE and THE PRINCESS BRIDE (both 1987). Worked often with his friend John Cassavetes.

No John Cassavetes in S&S top 100? What other great filmmakers didn’t make it?

Discussion

Late to the S&S discussion party, but I realized this morning that none of Cassavetes’ films made it onto the top 100. I don’t want this to be a negative post about what films don’t belong on the list, but maybe we could talk about what (if any) of Cassavetes’ films would you put in the top 100?

I would make a strong argument for “A Woman Under the Influence,” “Husbands,” or “Faces” to join. I think any of those three films are up to caliber with the rest. What are your thoughts?

Also what films/filmmakers do you love that didn’t make it onto the list?

And if you haven’t watched Cassavetes, treat yourself to one of his films sometime :).

Edit: So I didn’t understand that not everything on the director’s polls makes it into the final top 100 list. Even though directors put Cassavetes and other films on their lists, they didn’t make it in. However, this whole discussion has me thinking more about the way we use lists to “rank” art and consume it. I’m not entirely satisfied by this idea of listing, and I think we might be leaving too much out…

TÁR (2022) was boring, cold and pretentious and Cate Blanchett was so artificial and theatrical as Lydia Tár that I wonder if people, who are raving about this, ever saw Ingmar Bergman or John Cassavetes.

It's like, there wasn't a single moment in TAR where I felt like Cate Blanchett immersed herself in her character, it just seemed hammy and fake. It seemed just like acting to me. Sure, Blanchett can do a good speech but that doesn't make it great acting. I didn't buy it for a second. I thought Nina Hoss and the actress who played her assistant were a lot more convincing.

And it was Sooooooooo Boring. I mean, the endless monlogues, the pretentioness of it ll. I mean, how can you make a movie about a narcissistic, self-absorbed witch who destroys everyone around her and make it an absolute chore to go through?

Todd Field's previous movies were good. The guy next to me was so bored, he began to sleep. I could literally hear him snore.

If you want to watch something a whole lot better, I recommend OPENING NIGHT with Gena Rowlands and Joan Blondell. This had me wanting to scream.

Were John Cassavetes' criticism of method acting correct?

So as some of you may know, Cassavetes was extremely scornful of method acting, referring to it as "more a form of psychotherapy than of acting", not to mention accusing it of being self-indulgent, sentimental, pretentious and overall just producing bad performances.

His contempt was actually so strong that it inspired him to create his own acting workshop that focused on pure character creation rather than backstory, one that saw acting more as an expression of creative exuberance.

It's important to note how brave this was to do for a then struggling actor in 50s New York, where the Actors Studio was idolized and Cassavetes made plenty of enemies for saying these things. And mind you, this isn't just empty gesturing from a nobody, Lee Strasberg had actually offered him a full ride scholarship after being incredibly impressed by a performance by him which Cassavetes not only rejected but downright mocked him.

Personally I find method acting to be very valid and some of my favorite actors come from that tradition but I do concede that there is a certain degree of validity to what he's saying, there are lot of actors who unfortunately take a very simplistic approach to method.

Any thoughts on this?
