The last two days I discovered a niche sub-genre of documentary that Iโ€™m deeply into which is documentary about really โ€œout thereโ€ conspiracy theories and the people that believe in them. After binging all of Q: Into the Storm and following it up with Behind the Curve I think as a society we are primed for a mockumentary to help point out the insanity and let us all laugh at how ridiculous things have become. Enter Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy. Together they made a career creating brilliant mockumentaries like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, satirizing real world phenomena such as community theater, dog shows, and the folk music scene. Now that batshit insane conspiracy theories spread over the internet are a genuine phenomenon, I really would love to see a satirical take on them, in the mockumentary format. Anyone else really into seeing Guest and Levy, along with their staples like Catherine Oโ€™Hara, Michael McKean, Parker Posey, Jennifer Coolidge, John Michael Higgins, and Michael Hitchcock all meet up for the first international conference of Lizard People Truthers?

Edit: Did not expect to get this massive a response, but Iโ€™m thrilled to see that Guest and Levy have such a healthy fanbase! To respond to a few points Iโ€™ve seen repeated in the comments:

  1. Itโ€™s been pointed out that Guest and Levyโ€™s formula is to take the mundane and inject it with lively and absurd characters to create comedy, so taking something as ridiculous as Qanon or Flat Earth wouldnโ€™t fit their style. This is a fair critique. Although I do think they could make it work by flipping the formula, take a bunch of seemingly normal people with mundane lives and reveal they all believe something absolutely insane. That being said, maybe another creator like Armando Ianucci or the Documentary Now team would be a better fit. I went with Guest and Levy because theyโ€™re the first creators to come to mind when I think of mockumentary.

  2. I wouldnโ€™t want the mocumentary to be specifically about Qanon (or Flat Earth but Qanon is clearly the more hot button issue), just something as obviously crazy. I agree that it wouldnโ€™t be as funny if itโ€™s making fun of something real, just the types of people that get sucked into the conspiracy theory wormhole.

  3. And lastly, I didnโ€™t consider how negatively Qanon has affected many people, from tearing apart their families over the ideology, to encouraging violence including the storming of the US capitol. Thankfully I donโ€™t know anybody (at least I think) who is involved in either of these conspiracy theories so that distance allows me to laugh at the absurdity, but I understand why a lot of people feel itโ€™s nothing to laugh about.
