Gotta love mutual respect

[–]Murmur322 160 points161 points  (6 children)

Reminds me of one of my favorite mutual easter eggs that reached across mediums:

The videogame Rage featured an easter egg from Breaking Bad, Tuco’s grill is sitting on a shelf in the sheriff’s office. In response, Breaking Bad had Jessie playing Rage in the fourth season.

[–]PIWIprotein 62 points63 points  (5 children)

That is cross media sweet, breaking bad, arguably the best show ever, partially because of those details.

[–]Tacdeho 34 points35 points  (4 children)

And Rage….which….Rage! It’s a….

Okay, I’ll say this. It was Carmacks last game at Id and it’s success most likely helped bring us the Doom reboot so I’ll give it that

[–]Murmur322 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Honestly the first Rage had IMO the tightest gunplay of any videogame ever made. It’s graphics and enemy AI were also years ahead of its time, and it had some pretty neat gadgets like the wing stick and explosive rc cars. The level designs were fantastic (aside from the main world map that was lacking inspiration). Also the car-battles were the best in that genre of any game since Twisted Metal Black.

The game did have a lot of shortcomings though. The script and plot were derivative and cliched, the game was entirely too short. The “open world” was the smallest most closed-off open world game I’ve ever played.

But for all its shortcomings the first Rage was an overall solid game. It wasn’t breakthrough in any regard but the superior gunplay, AI, and map design made it feel fun from beginning to end. It was a solid 6/10, maybe even 7/10 game that was still worth it. The sequel was an abomination though.

[–]fuskadelic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo I was actually thinking a lot about this, more recently as I've been playing Mad Max.

[–]PIWIprotein 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Awesome, i have never played. Know an emulator? I like to….RAGE

[–]Tacdeho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s probably like $3 on steam and it’s 10 years old, I’m sure you probably can get it dirt cheap

ESQ: Is it true that you had a feud with Wes Craven?

SR: There's a torn-up poster of Jaws in [Craven's] The Hills Have Eyes, so I thought it would be funny to tear a Hills Have Eyes poster into pieces in The Evil Dead, to tell Wes, "No, this is the real horror, pal." So then, in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes put The Evil Dead on a television set, saying basically, "No, Sam, The Evil Dead is just pop entertainment. This is real horror."

ESQ: So it's over?

SR: Years ago, I was at the Cannes Film Festival giving a radio interview -- I had never met Wes -- and he came up to the booth. I thought, This is where I'm going to get old Wes. I hid and leaped out with a terrific shout, and he just jumped out of his skin. [Laughs] Then I introduced myself. He gave me a look like, Are you out of your mind? He's been very kind to me ever since. - interview from 2007

[–]DKV19202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had to show the old man what real horror was, in person!

[–]SlanceMcJagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, that was two-thirds of the interview. Ridiculous

[–]HorseSteroids 17 points18 points  (1 child)

It wasn't respect. Raimi put the poster there to be destroyed, symbolizing that Evil Dead is a new chapter in horror movies that makes everything else look silly. Evil Dead in Nightmare had the person watching it falling asleep in an obvious diss. Freddy's glove in Evil Dead 2 was a call for truce as nothing good or bad happens to it.

[–]Neysiriss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trying to one-up each other can still be a kind of respect. I don't think they did it out of spite or hatred so I'll go with respect or humour.

[–]machstem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mutual respect also turns nerds into massive nerds. It means we have actual reason to believe the monsters share the same universe.

[–]MrFluffyhead80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, this is way cooler than the Easter egg love affair between Lucas and Spielberg

[–]JTrace18 275 points276 points  (42 children)

This just made me realise something. So the evil dead is a movie in the NoES franchise, which exists in the same universe as Friday the 13th. In one Friday movie it is shown that Jason was created with the necronomicon from the evil dead. Which would suggest that the evil dead is based on true events or something?

(Different movies of the same franchise can ofcourse not be canon to others)

[–]teethansplinters 155 points156 points  (19 children)

To be fair, the Necronomicon shows up in Jason Goes to Hell. I also believe that someone involved in the creative team stated that Jason in JGtH is a Deadite.

[–]einharjar009 89 points90 points  (14 children)

Isn't Freddy vs Jason vs Ash canon? Because it takes places right after Freddy vs Jason, and has Freddy seeking out the necronomicon to resurrect and influence Jason into thinking Freddy was his father, and Ash is trying to stop them and the deadites

[–]_newtman 42 points43 points  (1 child)

this is the comic right?

[–]JustinTotino 26 points27 points  (8 children)

When it was potentially going to be a film made as a sequel to Freddy vs Jason, it could have been. But because it’s a comic book, it’s just that. The only thing canon in the Evil Dead realm are the 3 films and the TV series.

[–]Saetric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sad zombie noises

[–]AnonymousSpector 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Evil dead doesn't have a cannon.

The flashback in the second movie contradicts the first movie. The beginning of the third movie is completely different from the second movie. The TV show can't properly reference the third movie due to legal reasons

[–]machstem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I consider the universes mixed because of their ties, even subtle, in the movies.

NOES is tied to ED and ED is tied to FTT, and that's good enough for me, even if all we see are small samples of each other's works.

[–]JustinTotino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. The inconsistencies are both retcons and/or references/fixed in future instalment, such as the TV series. This is according to Raimi and Renaissance Pictures.

Evil Dead Wiki Timeline Link

[–]Omegamanthethird 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Is the "reboot" not actually canon?

[–]JustinTotino 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If I recall correctly, it’s canon in the sense that it’s another timeline, not in the same universe as Ash. (Despite the after credits cameo, haha)

[–]Omegamanthethird 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think they were initially going to have them meet. I've just kind of assumed that since it was planned, they're intended to be in the same universe.

[–]JustinTotino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that was the case too, when there was an idea for the remake’s sequel. Shame it never happened, but I hope the upcoming Evil Dead Rise is good!

[–]Caroniver413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the fuck

[–]Shantanu0992 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Pardon me, but what does "Canon" mean in film terms? Legitimately don't know the context of the word here. Wiki is showing the literal meaning

[–]Orngog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The canon is all the events determined to have taken place in the canonical story.

There are other Christian gospels than the four in the Bible, but they are not part of the canon.

[–]JTrace18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I mean.

[–]TomClancy5873 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Jason is Evil Dead canon?

[–]BadFortuneCookie17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In comics, not the films, other than some references. It threw me off too.

[–]ChattyKathysCunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didnt really think about their writing back then, they had no respect for the viewers intelligence.

[–]whatnameisnttaken098 37 points38 points  (7 children)

Fun fact we almost got a Ash vs Freddy vs Jason movie. But it languished in development hell.

[–]JTrace18 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Yeah I'm aware. They couldn't agree on who would win.

[–]wafflepantsblue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fair enough tbh. That's the problem with vs movies.

[–]in_casino_0ut 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I legitimately can't tell if this is a joke. I'd assume they would do something where Ash kills both then they show Freddy amd Jason are both alive somehow when the credits roll.

[–]JTrace18 25 points26 points  (1 child)

No it's how it really went. New line cinema called up Sam raimi about having ash in the movie. And Sam wanted Ash to win. It never really got much further than that. There was a concept script created which later became the comic I believe. There isn't a lot of info on those initial conversations.

[–]lemmeseeyourkitties 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Why would anyone ever disagree that Ash should win? I'm confused.

Hail to the king, baby

[–]yescaman 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So you're saying there's a chance?

[–]EJ33334 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly not anymore. Bruce Campbell our beloved ash retired from the roll after season 3 of Ash Vs Evil dead. So unless a lot of money is produced and he puts the saw back on I doubt we will ever see it

[–]poleybear316 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I feel really really stupid because it took me a solid 10 min to realize that NoE stands for Nightmare on Elm Street. I think I need more coffee.

[–]JTrace18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just now see I missed an 's'. Probably why it wasn't as obvious.

[–]SmallHeadDave 8 points9 points  (2 children)

The necronomicon was created by H.P. Lovecraft. So, what these movies suggest is that what Lovecraft wrote was non-fiction. It would also mean that it is very possible Cthulhu also exists in these universes.

[–]Sproose_Moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not a universe I'd like to live in

[–]JTrace18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But the design of it in Jason goes to hell was the one from evil dead 2. Like exactly. I believe the one from Lovecraft didn't look like it was made of flesh with a face on the cover. Necronomicon loosely translates to book of the dead which can be pretty common. Like castle of doom or something.

[–]lanceturley 14 points15 points  (2 children)

My headcanon is that the Evil Dead franchise is a multiverse, so maybe ED1 is just a movie in NoES, but ED2 takes place in the universe where Freddy and Jason exist.

[–]ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN 10 points11 points  (1 child)

In this case I think it's just directors having fun, but it's not unheard of for them to have shared universes. Tarantino and Rodriguez for example.

Also Lucas and Spielberg often referenced each others films.

[–]lanceturley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, of course I know it's just the directors joshing each other and I'm overthinking it. It's all in good fun.

[–]greymalken 6 points7 points  (2 children)

The magic words “Klaatu, Verata, Nicto” are an homage to The Day the Earth Stood Still (Klaatu barada nikto). Which happens to be the name of some aliens in the Ninja Turtles. So more crossovers?

[–]AnonymousSpector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ooze that created the ninja turtles also blinded daredevil in the original comics.

[–]JTrace18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ye they show up in more places. Recently Dr robotnik said them in the Sonic movie 2 for some reason.

[–]EJ33334 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well Ash was supposed to battle Freddy and Jason! (Along with a Pinhead cameo) but sadly the film was never created. One of my biggest sad facts I wish happened

[–]Omegamanthethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This applies to any media that exists within another media.

We can't assume that the media, as it exists in another media, is unaltered. For example, in Last Action Hero they make a point that Sylvester Stallone plays Terminator and Arnold doesn't exist within the Jack Slater movies. So it's possible that the F13 and NoES version of The Evil Dead doesn't have the Necronomicon.

[–]Portlander 43 points44 points  (1 child)

If only that cut off evil hand had found Freddy's glove.

[–]Patchman42 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That would have been awesome. And the absurd humor would totally fit the Ash vs the Evil Dead series. Would be a nice throwback/homage.

[–]Iisham 25 points26 points  (1 child)

There's two missing pieces to the back and forth. In Scream Randy presents several horror VHS tapes, one of which is Evil Dead, the group eventually picking Halloween.

And in Ash Vs Evil Dead, they go back in time and Freddy's glove is again found in the cellar.

[–]jeredws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still missing the first part of the whole story. "The hill have eye"s featured a torn poster of "Jaws" in the background of a scene, essentially saying that this movie is scarier than jaws(as told by craven). Raimi does the same to Craven in Evil dead and it continues from there.

[–]javsand120s 22 points23 points  (7 children)

Still waiting on a Hills have eyes 3…

[–]Vantheman147 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Hills have eyes is such a shocking movie, hate the rape scene though

[–]javsand120s 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yeah that scene is brutal, not gonna lie.

[–]Vantheman147 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Oh and last house on the left, mate that made me sweat Best movies though, haven’t seen anything as shocking these days , everything feel to be patented of other movies no real new stories

[–]Ability2canSonofSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the original or from the remakes? Both series had a part 2.

The only thing I liked in the remake was Ted Levine.

[–]Apprehensive_Neck817 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love when directors give nods to each other like this

[–]Ternarian 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Sounds like an epic horror bromance.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not totally related, but I watched dr strange 2 this last week and holy shit Raimi put himself all over that movie in a really great way.

[–]GitEmSteveDave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was actually a insult at first:

[–]ghetto_salmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This cool and I love these kind of details. I miss Wes Craven so much.

[–]Nail_Biterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeesh, guys. Get a room

[–]Axeleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's up with the lower/upper quotation marks? I've been seeing it more on Reddit. Is that a meta I missed or something else?

[–]dingo_username 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly find this really sweet, ive always wanted to interview Sam Raimi and would have loved to do the same with Wes Craven- Rest in peace

[–]theflashsawyer23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Referenception

[–]Akihirohowlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Continuing on this, the HHE poster reappeared in Ash vs Evil Dead (I believe the third season, maybe the second)

[–]meyerovb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always wondered why that glove was there

[–]snapdragon15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When directors are in love

[–]ShellGore420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s fucken awesome i love how directors play with each other like this!!

[–]zeek247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the party, pal..

[–]pikmin311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow

[–]BradleyHCobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This entire sub is just Leo pointing at the screen.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He likes tossing in cool movie posters in all his movies. Same with Darkman.

[–]Medical-Examination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s too much tuna

[–]MinecraftTroller28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More obscure bit of trivia: in a deleted scene in Evil Dead 2, an actual poster for Nightmare on Elm Street was hanging in the fruit cellar (where the Hills Have Eyes poster was in the first film)

[–]ZestyAppeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flirty!

[–]Root_Veggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another fun fact, the director of Jason Goes to Hell put in the Necronomicon and Kandarian Dagger as a way to say that Jason is canonically a Deadite.

[–]thecostly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PARDON ME??? Evil Dead came out in 1981?! Before A Nightmare on Elm Street? How have I never realized this before? I had no idea Evil Dead was that old. It’s actually mind blowing that Ash existed as a horror character before Freddy fucking Krueger.

[–]OuttatimepartIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a drama teacher in high school who loved Wes Craven movies. He told us all about how the the glove mysteriously disappeared from the set one day. It gave my nerd heart such glee to fill him in on this playful back and forth and that the glove disappearing moat likely ended up in Evil Dead 2

[–]Altephfour[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall a rumor about that being the actual glove "borrowed" from the set of Nightmare on Elm street 3 that was returned the next day.

[–]soco81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artists supporting artists!

Anytime I'd watch Nightmare on Elm Street it would drive me nuts that I couldn't remember what movie Nancy was watching. It wasn't until I'd seen Evil Dead a few more times that I started recognizing "shut it offffffff".

[–]ColdBloodBlazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Necronomicon in Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday. Freddy Also Makes A Cameo

[–]thatmanbrandon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤝🤝🤝

[–]MrNaoB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What horror movie is there like out in USA arid area and getting hunted by inbred stuff

[–]TheGanglionDepths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dee Wallace nearly had a cameo. She's on the bottom corner in the background of the Hills poster, but that part is ripped with Dee on it. She was almost in Evil Dead as a cameo lol
