I've worked at 3 different FAANGs as a data scientist. Google, Amazon and I'll keep the third one private for anonymity. I now manage a team. I see a lot of activity on this subreddit, happy to answer any questions people might have about working in Big Tech.
Started my DA role 7 months ago. I was supposed to be focused on marketing but my shortsighted manager laid off someone in an adjacent position and put his workload on me (that involves tasks not in the job description). So now I oversee digial analytics for Eeeverything.
My manager is a flashy tech-bro that says things like "we are going to maximize synergy across all departments and determine cadence yada yada". He spends most of his time in meetings with the VP and Director and makes sure to introduce me to all higher ups, which is fair, but he seemingly has no grasp of what I do. I just recently found out that there is a team of data engineers that could have been incredibly helpful when my boss couldn't think of a solution.
I feel like in every meeting I'm in, everyone presents themselves using jargon that I find so unnatural to say. During my 6 month review, my manager said I spoke too casually and that I really need to SELL that I'm a data professional.
But this is not how I speak. It's never been a problem until now. I feel like he writes impromptu scripts for me to present and if I don't say his exact words, he'll accuse me of not saying it (even though I did in another way).
