Notable Box Office Stories:

  • Seems even the power of Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt on horses couldn't save the September doldrums as The Magnificent Seven came in #1 with an underperforming $35 mil. While not a terrible haul for the $90 mil action western, the film was expected to easily pass Rango ($38 mil) and Cowboys & Aliens ($36 mil) to have the best opening weekend ever for a western, but just came in third overall. In particular hopes were high going into the weekend, with high star power, a diverse cast, and decent reviews. Now the film did open better than the last Antoni Fuqua/Denzel action outing The Equalizer which opened to $34.1 mil, but that film was rated R and didn't have Chris Pratt co-starring. The film did get an A- on Cinemascore, so as the only new major PG-13 action film out right it could hold well with word of mouth. Internationally the film is doing well, earning $21.3, mainly in South Korea where marketing has focused solely on Korean actor Byung-hun Lee. Ultimately The Magnificent Seven should justify its creation but it won't be the slam dunk late entry hit that Sony is desperate for at this stage.

  • Despite a bit of a desert of kids movies out right now Storks couldn't quite muster up the families as it opened far under predictions at #2 with $21.8 mil. Compared with fellow September opening animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($30 mil) and Hotel Transylvania ($42.5 mil) it far underperformed, but with a mid-range budget of $70 mil Storks had a lot less to lose on the table. Internationally the film did solidly, opening also under predictions with $18.3 mil, including a $5 mil opening weekend in China. The film received an A- on Cinemascore so without competition in the future Storks should hold well enough but don't expect a Storks franchise in the future.

  • I try not to talk about future releases too much but I've never seen anything like the recent announcement from Viacom that they expect the Paramount film Monster Trucks, which doesn't open until January 2017, to lose $110 mil. The film, a $100 mil kids film about monsters inside of pickup trucks, is tracking horrendously and has been barely advertised despite its huge budget. According to Viacom the film went through multiple revisions before settling on a kid's film. That kind of muddled message clearly has inspired zero confidence in Viacom who already expect the film to be a total loss despite not coming out till next year. This is pretty terrible news for Paramount who are coming off a string of major losses like Ben-Hur and the TMNT sequel.
