Basically Paraguay thought it could gain more territory by taking out Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay at the same time. Despite early success in the war due to Brazil's late mobilization, the war went exactly how you would expect it to: Paraguay got curbstomped.

because the American civil war was extremely brutal basically a prequel to the type of stuff seen in WWI line tactics used against entrenched enemy's with fast firing accurate rifles and cannons even then it seems the Paraguayan war was more brutal
