People seem to be redefining Web 2.0 as Facebook, etc, that own data, but Web 2.0 at the time was platforms like WordPress, Odeo, Six Apart, Flickr, Technorati, and del.icio.us that had open data and interoperated. flickr.com/photos/ross/49

3. I agree there is an overall move toward using platforms. But there is a big difference between using a platform that also owns all the data also (web2) and a platform that is merely a proxy to decentralized data (web3).

I am very grateful that folks at Apple re-reviewed and have let us know we do not need to implement in-app purchases to be able to continue to update the app. Bad news travels faster than good, usually, so please consider sharing that they reversed course.

Twitter does some things so darn well, like how their embeds work, the web app, the related tweets, how the app works when you don't have a good connection... if you're an engineer that worked on that stuff and want to do it again, HMU

Heads up on why updates have been absent... we were locked by App Store. To be able to ship updates and bug fixes again we had to commit to support in-app purchases for .com plans. I know why this is problematic, open to suggestions. Allow others IAP? New name?

Why I just paid for Twitter Blue: 1. I think Twitter is great and want to see it succeed. I learn a ton on here. 2. I want to see subscription models work for social networks, we're also attempting this on .

My life's mission, and the purpose of WordPress, is to increase the freedom of the internet. I hope in addition to native apps people continue to create websites and web apps that provide accessibility, autonomy, and freedom to the widest audience. Future generations deserve it.

Want to take your following list from Twitter to ? We want to help you do that! Unfortunately, @TwitterAPI is returning an empty list for every user we check with our token using their API. 😕 It's your data, they're locking it up!

For : Over the past 7 days, iOS downloads are up 58% with 30% more impressions in the App Store. Android downloads are up 57% with 50% more impressions in the Play Store.

We have to stop saying work remotely, it's about working in a distributed fashion. "Remote" implies there is a central. But this poll should definitely give people food for thought. 😄

iMessage on MacOS is the worst software Apple currently ships. Better search in iMessage would have a really positive impact on my life. Sometimes I still resort to SQLite queries on chat.db.

I suppose this is a good opportunity to let people know that I'll be running personally for a while, and it will be my top priority within . There is a ton of opportunity for improvements the community has asked for and deserves, and I'm excited to work on it.

Tumblr, at 15 years old, has just lost its CEO. Yet these half-deserted ruins of a social platform have defined the internet as we know it, @kait_tiffany writes. on.theatln.tc/zy9gwlN

Can we all agree that giant per-post image headers look terrible on most blogs? It’s been a curse of default WP themes past few years, too. We need it to be easier to have posts without image headers and even without titles.

As WP continues through the decades, we have to deal with all parts of life, including death. As a community, we now have a memorial place we can remember and honor those who contributed to but are no longer part of this world.

It's hard to overstate how important this is to other corporations and the other big tech companies. Others that don't do this will lose talent to Microsoft (and smaller distributed companies).

I don't disagree with anything else in 's thread, it's just a trend that retcons web2 to be regressive when the same goals (interoperability, openness, decentralization) were there. To be fair, Web2 probably did the same thing to Web1 in 2005.

33 days since we called off WordCamp Asia. A lot has happened since then. I hope all WordPressers and their loved ones are staying safe and well. I'm really proud of WP companies stepping up to support their communities.

FWIW, 's boosted post feature on (called Blaze), which is in spirit like Facebook's, was rejected until we implemented it as IAP and gave the 30% cut.

Anyway the most interesting conversation to me is how to make all the new stuff as user-friendly as possible without recreating the same centralized bottlenecks and gatekeepers.

We will continue to be responsive and do our best to be within both the spirit and letter of the app store rules, including closing any webview loopholes that pop up. This also made me appreciate the freedom of the open and independent web.

It seems like a good time to thank for the awesome Bose headphones they sent me for my birthday in January! Awesome company, no weird ads, doesn’t impersonate competitors... sounds good to me.

Details matter. Details matter! Take some time today to look around your spheres of influence — your team, your time, your work, your desk — and do something to raise the quality bar. Hold yourself accountable to make it a daily habit. The impact will ripple and compound.

Hopefully someday I’ll be serious! But seriously, I do recommend periodic meetups and that was part of Automattic’s culture since 2005. 3–4 weeks a year seems to get you much of the benefits of full time collocation.

I did not expect the previous tweet to get attention outside the WP community. My understanding was the previous decision was final, and we had already made many of the arguments people suggested privately over the several weeks the app was locked.

Read this thread. Many companies are pleasantly surprised by how well things are going right now, it may be much worse when they start bringing people back to the office. "Hybrid" is tough.

Below is a thread about the future of remote work after the COVID-19 pandemic is over. I predict that remote will go through a trough of sorrow due to hybrid not working out, and most companies will return to being office based. But many all remote companies will see success.

5. The #blocktheblue protest doesn't make sense. What's success look like: Twitter out of business? If you want to block me for supporting a site that provides a ton of utility to me every day, I'm actually very okay with that.

I am a big believer in the sanctity of licenses. (Open source relies on licenses and copyright.) We agreed to this license when we signed up for (and stayed in) the app store, so going to follow and abide by the rules. Not looking to skirt it, hence doing what they asked us to.
