Wedding Singer was set only 13 years before it was made???

So I'm watching it tonight in 2023 and realised it was set in 1985 and released in 1998. The gag through the entire movie is mid 80s culture and fashion, eg Michael Jackson glove, fluoro coloured clothes, shoulder pads etc.
Now if a movie was made today set in 2010 could the comedy be based off the change in fashion etc. I feel like my wardrobe hasn't changed that much in the last 13 years. Or maybe I'm just getting old.
