I found a car with the options I wanted: Blue 2017 with Rex, Tech Package, Harmon Kardon, and Deca interior. I found one for $20.4k with 30k miles and flew to Chicago to pick it up and drive it back to Dallas. Here's what I did/learned:

It was 40* in Chicago, so I couldn't really test the AC properly, so I took a gamble on that. I checked the Rex oil, and its was good to go. I couldn't test the Rex because it was fully charged, so I couldn't take an accurate oil reading, but they just changed the oil, so it seemed in order.

I drove about 60 miles to a Walmart with an Electrify America fast charger. I coded the car for Hold State of Charge and the upgraded fuel capacity, bought a can of Fix A Flat, a 2 gallon gas can (which I ultimately didn't need), and some snacks.

I went to test the Rex in emissions mode, and it wouldn't start and gave me an error and CEL. Panic set in, as I thought I wouldn't be able to make the trip without it. Either way, I charged for about 30 minutes to 90% and drove off, hoping it would work. I went to gas station and used the restroom. When I came back, I was around 75%, so I fired up the Rex and it worked fine, and cleared the code.

Overall, the trip that was supposed to take ~15 hours on Google maps took about 18.5, factoring in gas and charging stops. I fast charged a couple of times when the Rex couldn't keep up. I tried Eco mode with no AC and 70mph, but there were 30mph headwinds for a majority of the way, so it was slowly losing charge over some long stretches.

Things I figured out:

  • I thought Tech package had a backup camera, but apparently, I needed the Parking Assist package as well. I have purchased an MMI for CarPlay, so I added a backup camera as well. I plan to install this weekend.

  • Adaptive Cruise sucks in the sun. It kept disengaging and I couldn't figure out how to get regular cruise back. Luckily, this only happened around 5-8PM, and then as the sun went down, it worked fine. I found out how to disable adaptive and revert back to regular cruise after the fact.

  • The A/C and vent control system is wonky. Auto on the AC doesn't control the fan. I had to set the fan to high, and it modulated as necessary after that. The A/M controller for the recirculated air is odd, but I figured it out.

Overall, I am really happy with the car. It will be my commuter car for work. I definitely don't recommend taking it on a long road trip, because it is annoying having to fill it back up every hour and 10 minutes, but it is doable if you don't mind.
