What is the dumbest travel mistake you've made?

I had a personal alarm on my bag, one where if you pull the strap a loud alarm goes off. I got it because I'm a solo traveler and hike a lot and wanted something to set off if I twisted my ankle in the middle of the woods.

I forgot about it and left it on my bag that I don't normally check, got my bag back without it attached. I imagine the cord got pulled during handling and the poor airport employees had to smash it to get it to stop yelling at them. Sorry guys 🤦‍♀️

Do you leave the 5 Star Resort when you travel to a tropical destination?

I was all excited to visit with my friends who spent ten days on a tropical island in Asia last month. They spent about 40 hours in cars, airplanes and airports from Jamestown North Dakota USA to get there and arrived after dark. They took a taxi to a fancy resort hotel and then never left the resort the entire ten days.

The hotel they stayed at was not all inclusive and they had to pay a retail rate at the restaurant, bars and shops. If they walked out of the hotel into town the prices would be half as much.

I asked them what they did at the resort and they said they ate, drank lots of beer and wine and chatted with people at the pool. In the evenings they partied at the bars at the hotel. Basically they hung out in their room, at the pool, ate lots of food, drank lots of booze and relaxed. They said it was a perfect vacation. This was their first trip to Asia.

I asked them why they did not tour the island or at least take a drive to a near by outside mall and tourist area where they could shop, walk around and see a bit of the island on the way. They said, "why would we when the resort was so nice?" And most of the people they talked to at the pool and the hotel bars never left the resort either.

I think going to a vacation destination that takes them over 40 hours to get there and not leaving the resort the entire time is odd, but I don't want to be over judgmental because it is their vacation but wonder what the users of Reddit think of this approach to a vacation. What do you think, would you fly all the way from the USA to Bali to stay inside the resort for 100% of your vacation?

Did you prioritize career or travel in your 20s?

I (23F) kickstarted my career right after graduating college — I literally started 2 weeks after graduation.

I’ve been in the corporate 9-5 grind for 2+ years now, but all I ever think about is wishing I took a bit of time to travel first (like a gap year or a working holiday visa).

Curious to hear others’ experiences with balancing career/travel in your 20s. Which did you prioritize/are you prioritizing, and do you have any regrets?

It’s taking everything in me not to put my career on pause to live abroad for a couple of years before I settle into a stable routine. I probably will end up doing that in a year so I have time to save more money.

All stories/advice welcome!

Basically, insider tips for travelling that not many people know about. For example, I only recently learned that I could just pay per visit in many airport lounges even if I don’t have a membership.

Long term travel - I just want to go home now. Has anyone cut their travel plans short?

Hi guys

I quit my job and planned/budgeted to travel for 16 weeks. I've been traveling for 10 weeks now.

I'm from New Zealand so I've flown to other side of the world.

I started in South Korea for a week.

Spent about 3 weeks in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Then I flew to Europe. I went by train and bus through Riga, Kaunas, Warsaw, Gdansk, Poznan, Berlin, Prague, Brno, Kromeriz, Ostrava, Krakow, Zakopane, Kosice.... and right now I am in Budapest.

It's my 4th night in Budapest and all I've really done here is walk around and eat food and drink coffee. I love museums, I went to a great one in Gdansk. But after that I just couldn't face going to another museum.

I was really looking forward to Krakow and going to Auschwitz, but I didn't even go in the end and spent most of the time in my hotel room.

I do about 70% hotels and 30% hostels. I met people in the hostels to chat with or have a meal with which was nice at times. I'm an introvert and don't really feel lonely. I dunno I just feel over this trip and like I'm wasting my money now.

Last year I also did a long term trip. I planned 12 weeks and ended up changing my flight to go home after 10. So I'm in week 10 now and just wanna change my flight and get back home to real life.

Also I only plan a few days in advance. After Budapest I was planning either Timişoara or Belgrade. If I went to Timişoara I would carry on around Romania and Bulgaria to Istanbul. If I went Serbia I would go around maybe Albania and Croatia and make my way to Italy, which is where my return flight is from currently.

Has anyone cut a trip short like this? I feel so ready to go home, but also, I might regret it when I get there.

Basically, I just want someone to tell me it's ok to go home now.. I've done a lot in 10 weeks.

How do you deal with travel burnout?

i’m only 1 month into an 8 month long trip and starting to miss home and my work. it’s been a huge change for me as i’ve never travelled before. i’m 20 and it’s my first time overseas, visiting family at different points in Europe and I honestly just feel numb to the things i’m seeing.

I read somewhere that after you’ve seen 1-2 cathedrals you’ve seen them all, and at first I didn’t believe that but now i’m wondering how many others feel that way.

I’ve spent the past day or so just resting before another journey to a different destination but i don’t feel like it’s done much to help.

I spent the first 3 weeks in the uk and really enjoyed seeing and spending time there, this past week i made the journey to paris and i’ve not enjoyed it nearly as much.

i’m having trouble with the language barrier and the huge amount of tourists in paris is pretty overwhelming, I intended to stay in france / europe for close to 3 months but i’m thinking of cutting it short to head back to the uk and spend some more time over there instead.

I’m not sure if it’s travel fatigue that’s catching up with me or if france just isnt for me, overall though just looking for some advice and ideas

Tell me your most embarrassing travel moments! I’ll start.

Another post refreshed this deeply repressed embarrassing memory in my mind today, and the cringe-wound feels fresh again, so I thought I’d share it with you all.

We were staying in a luxury suite that had a personal room attendant who we met briefly when we arrived that afternoon. We were in a hurry to get out and explore, so we ditched our belongings in the room, and headed out to sightsee. When we returned late that evening, we were shocked to find that our luggage had been unpacked for us. Our toiletries were in the bathroom, neatly placed on his and hers trays; our clothes were hung, and shoes carefully lined … and then the kicker:

MY LINGERIE WAS SPLAYED OUT ON THE BED, ANGLED TOWARD THE DOOR, WITH A TRAIL OF ROSE PETALS LEADING UP TO AND SURROUNDING IT - A PLATE OF CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRIES AND A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE NEARBY.

I had a few pieces of lingerie in my bag, so this one had been chosen. And, the room attendant must’ve not noticed, but it had (I’m rocking in fetal position as I write this) …… already been used.

I. Was. Mortified.

Needless to say, I could not look our male room attendant in the eye for the remainder of the stay.
