Cheers for the pro’s insight 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 …yeah been a while…. mortars were never my thing …called them in plenty of times but as for operating..not my cup of tea…except for maybe our platoon based 51mm light mortar…mainly for illum tasks and even that’s kinda a thing of the past now

In all honesty I used to give the mortar lads a hard time ( friendly banter ) with their comfy sleeping and bacon sandwiches 😂

Hats off to them though…jumping in with the barrel, base plate, bipod and rounds ( could be last out the plane but still be first on the ground!) ….then carry that s*** ….and I’ll never complain about more firepower

Now I was no mortar man …but ….in essence to fire at a closer target you aim the barrels higher …so the round travels higher ….but a shorter distance…think trajectory and flight arcs…so flight times should and would be quite similar (only by a few seconds) but dropping rounds on a close enemy wouldn’t be much quicker that a far one, this does become a bit more technical when we incorporate “charges” ….tube’s..( mortars ) can adjust the number of propellant charges on their bombs thus effecting range and travel time (a simple plastic clip on ring filled with propellant) it all gets a bit technical when you incorporate this so doubtful it’s in game …but essentially, if we keep with the same “charge” flight time would be very similar regardless of distance

Fair one, on ops if I call for a mortar strike I’m given a flight time by the MFC, but there’s no huge difference (eg “8 seconds bombs out” or “11 seconds bombs out” …you get the idea)

A mg on a rifle team is there for fire support, and suppression reaching out “effectively” to about 800m

Where this game come up short is on the tripod mounted units, a 3 gun gun line using map predicted fire can be used to deny a large area, suppress a whole company or more or cause massive casualties out to …3k? If memory serves me right, in 25 round bursts…forgive my memory it was a long time ago and wasn’t my preferred role (may have even been out to 5k) What would be interesting to see is mg’s on tripods (what we call the sustained fire role) having a fire on position option like mortars and arty get

Edit to add. A mg even in the light role (bipod or just supported) is considered an “area weapon” not super accurate but for covering a specific “patch” shall we say, using bursts of 3-5 rounds every 8 seconds (8 seconds if memory serves) For context…on the range the targets we use at 300m+ are triple figure 11’s ….essentially 3 people wide and that’s what you’re graded on However….however….a good MG gunner will regulate his fire to suit the situation….if I’m suppressing an area I’ll extend that burst and have a shorter time between bursts ( certainly when the assault goes in) ….if i really wanted to focus a specific target I’ll drop the burst to 2-3 rounds and fire with only a second between bursts and hit a man sized target in the chest with at least 2 rounds from that burst out to 600 …maybe 800

It’s all about desired effect

I was a fully qualified light role gunner and did it plenty of times I was also a fully qualified sustained fire gunner and fire controller….but never did it in a combat situation, it was more so if the platoon needed that capability we had it

But again….guns wasn’t really my bag Same as sniping (fully badged and toured sniper) ….always wanted to be a sniper….but found I was much more happy and more suited to door kicking and posting grenades

In the UK at section level (8 man team) we could have upto 2 mmg’s on the section “golf bagging” weapon systems to suit the task so may only have one or none and take a m249 ( minimi ), sharpshooter rifle or assault rifles in their place…again, situation and effect

At the platoon level (3 and a half to 4 sections) we would have a separate “fires” section or fire team (4 man) that would deal with mg’s on tripod’s for that sustained fire with the option to pull the qualified troops from the assault sections if we wanted more guns …again situation and effect

Then at company level (4 platoons) we would have a support weapon’s platoon that dealt with mortars and dedicated sustained fire MG teams….sniper section could also be on this platoon (making it platoon level plus strength) but more often than not they were part of company HQ ( the fifth and final platoon on a company) as they were considered what’s called a “company commanders asset” because of their intelligence gathering capabilities

To clarify on that….a company commander doesn’t on the most part plan or allocate tasks to the platoons, that’s the job of either the 2nd or 3rd in command of the company…a guy called the operations officer (ops O) the company commander gives the ops o his objectives and limits and will have input but he deals with bigger responsibilities

The best explanation is this, the company commander is the daddy, the 2nd in command the mum, the dad runs the show, the mum makes it run …but sniper’s belong to the company commander!

This was my units approach and was mirrored by many, but different units had different approaches, there is no “set” doctrine that everyone keeps to

170,000! Out of 7 billion people when the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 290,000–650,000 flu-related deaths annually. so yeah…..mild. Now I’m not down playing it at all, and yes vaccination would have helped in certain demographics but 170,000 is nothing in the grand scheme and that’s if we totally accept that number and not factor in all the “died with” not “died of” shenanigans that were going on

In 2021 I moved to the least vaccinated country in the whole of Europe and despite all the fear mongering omicron was a non event here….and now….isnt suffering from this super mysterious “excess death” event. Same as most countries that had a low vaccine uptake now have the lowest cases of the “excess death’s” ….odd that. Now am I claiming h to at the covid vaccine is responsible…no ….but there is an interesting correlation, it could indeed be argued that due to the low vaccination rate many of the people that would have died in this excess death wave are already dead due to not being vaccinated. But surely…..we KNOW that covid was most likely to kill the weak, old and infirm….the people that would have probably died over the coming years, so with those people now already being dead (before their time) surely there should be a LOWER mortality rate now as the people that would have been dying are already dead?

It was mainly on this platform, x, and certainly from news outlets that allow comments, have to admit, I was shocked and made me reflect on how easily people are manipulated and how extreme people can be, at first we had the vaccinated calling for the internment of the non vaccinated, then we had the non vaccinated calling for the internment of the vaccinated (because they became carriers without symptoms (super carriers)) if I’m totally honest…part of me wishes covid was as serious as what was advertised…we need a good culling as people are dumb….a person can be smart….but PEOPLE! are dumb

To add! I was an adviser to an advisor to a member of the UK’s covid cobra team due to my experience in “human terrain mapping and management” After 3 months I said “to hell with this” as I saw how my work was being used in propaganda and manipulation of people

Totally agree, but also have to acknowledge corruption and some one somewhere profiteering off the back of misery, the problem largely was there was so much of it going on from both sides of the argument. The biggest take away for me from the whole covid debacle was how quickly and easily people can turn on each other and be so manipulated that they literally cry out for people to be rounded up into camps…..history repeats

Totally agree …sorry wasn’t trying to be an arse, but yeah…a decent recon unit would (depending on the unit) have optics capable of x8 maybe x16 or more, when this game is set they would possibly have gen 1 or 2 nigh vision or thermal (thermal being a massive piece of kit akin to having a movie camera on your shoulder making a constant humming noise) but muzzle flash, unless you are on the receiving end ….from a shooter from within a building with the narrow angle of view created by the window or firing hole it can be incredibly difficult to pin point a firing location, urban warfare is bit of a b****, rather than using obvious firing points, we’ll remove bricks and shoot through walls, remove roofing tiles and shoot from the attic and so on and with the natural damage created from urban warfare…none of it looks out of place. Second only to the Jungle, urban is probably the most difficult theatre to soldier in, but for different reasons

Troops are trained NOT to hang out of windows and stay a distance back and shoot from inside the room preferably from shadow….to penetrate shadow you need optics of at least x7

It would be a massive risk over reward move, as it stands if you want to occupy a village you have to land on the outskirts and manoeuvre in …same as wooded blocks, fast rope would allow for precision insertion but would inevitably put the helo in a more precarious situation
