In this post, I use the name format Gate*[dot]*io so the name isn't registered as a link.
In more news about not your keys not your crypto, Binance and Gate[dot]io retain the right to seize your funds if you do not use your account for some time.
Specifically for Gate[dot]io they specify a period of 2 years. The TOS says:
They deem your crypto as โabandoned propertyโ if you do not log in for two years and reserve the right to seize your assets. It gets a bit more murky for Binance.
Binance describes such accounts as โDormant Accountsโ. Stunningly they do not outline any specific deadline or timeframe by which they use to determine what a dormant account is or how long it takes for an account to be deemed as such. It seems it is simply up to the whims of Binance themselves. Binance does claim that they may initially send a notice to dormant account owners to close all positions and withdraw their assets within 30 days. The use of may seems to indicate they can choose whether to notify you.

ACH WITHDRAWALS: We encourage customers to withdraw their USD via bank transfer (ACH) by June 13, 2023. Due to elevated volumes and weekend bank closures, ACH withdrawals may take longer than usual to process (e.g. up to several days); we appreciate your patience.
USD DEPOSITS: To ensure a timely USD withdrawal process, we are suspending USD deposits and recurring buy orders today and beginning the transition to a crypto-only exchange. Any deposits already initiated will be processed.
USD TRADING PAIRS: Beginning next week, we will start delisting USD pairs (e.g., BTC-USD) on our platform, while continuing to support stablecoin pairs (e.g., BTC-USDT).
USD BALANCES: Any USD balances remaining on the platform after June 15, 2023 may be converted to stablecoin that can be withdrawn on-chain.ย?
Cryptocurrency services remain fully operational, including: crypto trading, staking, deposits and withdrawals.
Until we secure more stable banking partners, Binance.US will remain a crypto-only exchangeโat least for a time. We will continue to provide you with updates via our status page.ย?

beware of platforms that offer High APYs

if you don't do risk management now, don't blame others for the consequences later
fast forward to today and the headlines are about Binance laying off thousands of employees
It also turns out that Binance offers high APYs
So if we listen to the warning that CZ tweeted last year everybody should probably stop using Binance or get ready to blame nobody but yourself for not doing proper risk management.
