I just added this perfect piece of October reading to my wish list. It looks fantastic!

Chris Woodyard, author of the The Ghosts of the Past series, digs through long-buried newspapers and journals, for this fascinating look at the 19th-century obsession with the culture of death. The Victorian Book of the Dead unearths extraordinary tales of Victorian funeral fads and fancies, ghost stories, bizarre deaths, mourning novelties, gallows humor, premature burial, post-mortem photographs, death omens, and funeral disasters. It’s pretty easy to find a variety of plush zombie creatures these days, but Undead Teds are a cut above (pun intended).

Halloween Countdown: Peeping Thomas Vampire

Welcome to the Halloween Countdown! I couldn’t wait to post this window decoration from Victorian Trading Co. But I found the link was gone, and the original Peeping Thomas product had been replaced with a Peeping Thomas “vampire.” I feel it’s a major downgrade.

Here is the first version:

This has be to be the most legitimately creepy Halloween decoration I’ve seen. It’s not over the top ghoulish, and the face looks almost real from a distance.

Come on…did that figure really need BLOOD? Now it’s closer to a Halloween superstore item. Do you agree, or do you think the blood works?

I sense a seemingly incorrigible child and a maudlin, happy ending.

I can forgive the obvious impracticality of having a giant tube directly in the driver’s field of vision, because it’s clearly inspired by atomic structure.

A wonder what qualifies as a “good” or “mediocre” decapitation.

This could be a poster to promote neutering (PSA: countless healthy animals are put down in shelters due to overpopulation. Have your pet spayed/neutered!)

Dug Stanat

Dug Stanat is an awesome sculptor who specializes in creepy, crawly, and undead creations.

When I first saw some of these, I thought they were paintings. He can achieve an incredible sense of movement and weightlessness.

Doesn’t this look like it’s floating?

And here we have a cartoonishly gaunt fellow with bats in flight.
