Hari & Deepti

Posted in paper, sculpture with tags , , , on September 2, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

This post has been sitting in my draft folder for many months, but now that I’m about to try my hand at paper lightbox creation, Hari & Deepti are on my mind.

Their technique is unparalleled; the use of layering, light placement and various techniques to manipulate opacity create a surprising degree of depth and detail.

From the artist bio:
Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.

The contrast between the plain pieces, and their inviting glow when lit is quite magical. It’s as if they literally come to life.

Mr. Riu

I was absolutely certain Mr. Riu’s detailed cut paper projects must be laser cut, but he does all of them meticulously by hand.

I think sometimes there is immense satisfaction in doing something the hard (er, traditional) way in an age where so much digital shortcuts are available. The act of creation is intrinsically meditative and meaningful.

Travis Bedel makes some of the most breathtaking nature and anatomical mashup collages I’ve ever seen.

Bovey Lee

Bovey Lee creates dizzying rice paper cutouts filled with topsy turvy twirls and turns.

She has a great artist statement:
My hand cut paper explores the tension between man and the environment in the context of power, sacrifice, and survival. These three “motivators,” as I call them, drive all our desires and behaviors toward one another and the environment.

We live in a time when we overdo everything from technology to urbanization to consumption. My recent work is informed by our precarious relationship with nature in the twenty-first century, i.e., what we do to the environment with our super machines and technologies and what nature does back to us in reaction.

Annemarieke Kloosterhof makes gorgeous two and three dimensional paper cutting projects.

Yes, this is paper…

Of particular interest to me is her “Vital” series, in which she “[tries] to capture the essence of the different diseases people struggle with, and the feeling it gives them, hiding amongst the delicate veins are animals and insects to be found, portraying the delicacy of the human body and its vital organs.”

The “invaders” in each organ are not quite visible at first glance, but upon closer inspection they become apparent.

I’ve posted many images of gorgeous paper cutting over the years, but Cybele Young has her own spin on papercraft: constructing miniature exact replicas of real world items, and juxtapozing them in a kind of dialogue.

This tiny curling iron is brilliantly titled “It’s Worth It This Time.”

She achieves such precise detail that it’s hard to believe these are made of paper.

I wish I could see a time lapse video of one of these pieces being made. Wouldn’t it be great to witness plain sheets of paper turn into this before our eyes?

Hoang Tien Quyet

We’ve all seen traditional crisp, pointy origami figures defined by their straight lines and sharp edges. Hoang Tien Quyet uses wet folding to bring some soft curvature to his creations.

This technique seems to bring these creatures extra dimension, life…personality.

Can you imagine opening a folded piece of paper and seeing THIS spring to life before your eyes? I’d like to keep one nearby for emergency doses of vibrant vegetation in barren winter months.

Lotuses are my favorite flower, and she does an outstanding job with the petal detailing on this.

Isobelle Ouzman’s altered books are spectacular three dimensional creations that breathe new life into discarded volumes. Light seems to shine from within them, and draw us down a path inside the pages.

ouzman-1

She states:
Every book that I alter was found by a dumpster in Seattle, a recycling bin, a thrift store, or was given to me by someone who no longer wants it. Rather than have these discarded books sit out in the rain or in some store to gather dust, I’m striving to make good use of them. I love books very much and would never carve into one that was valuable. I just want to give them a new life and a second chance to mean something again.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

As to how I make these – glue, an x-acto knife, Micron pens, watercolors and lots of love.

Gabriel Schama

Gabriel Schama makes incredible large scale laser cut pieces (click photos to enlarge). The depth and texture are mesmerizing!

The+Materialization+of+Empathy

Each layer is cut and mounted, one by one, allowing the shapes and forms to evolve in ways even the artist himself doesn’t plan (aside from the initial cutout shape). Isn’t it wonderful that they grow like organisms?

It’s like geometric shapes that have melted and broken free from the confines of their own rigid lines!
