Halloween Countdown: Appendage Accessories

Posted in craft, skulls and skeletons with tags , , , , on October 18, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

While not an exclusively spooky shop, these sleep masks by Appendage Accessories are perfect for the Halloween season.

I can’t really use sleep masks because I get uncomfortable with anything pressing against my face when I try to sleep (other than a pillow). But if I could, these would definitely be my choice!

Life Sized Octopus Backpack

Posted in accessories, craft, sea with tags , , , , on September 21, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

Although it’s certainly not the most practical accessory, I must admit I still checked to see if this life sized octopus backpack by Olga Kotova was for sale (it’s not…but I swear I would’ve had restraint!).

I’ve seen cutesy octopus bags before, but I admire her choice to throw caution to the wind and go for realism here.

Would you use this backpack just for the fun of it?

Martin Tomsky

Martin Tomsky has been showing up a lot in my Pinterest suggestions…for good reason.

From the artist bio:
I am a London based artist who creates illustrative, relief pieces built up from layers of laser cut, stained plywood. These range in size and shape from very small items of jewellery to much larger, bespoke artworks. Each piece is hand assembled to create a unique, organic object that bridges the gap between craft, illustration and sculpture.

The effect he creates is awesome…

While I’m incredibly impressed by the level of detail in the larger, wild compositions, this may be my absolute favorite. The tea really makes the piece.

Masayoshi Matsumoto: Balloon Animals

Posted in craft, creatures with tags , , , on August 3, 2016 by shewalkssoftly

Where was Masayoshi Matsumoto when I was a kid having birthday parties? I’d absolutely love his balloon sculptures at my future parties for adults, too.

Check out his site for many more badass, beautiful balloon beasts.

I love her style. These are like little portraits…just missing the flesh.

Mr. Riu

I was absolutely certain Mr. Riu’s detailed cut paper projects must be laser cut, but he does all of them meticulously by hand.

I think sometimes there is immense satisfaction in doing something the hard (er, traditional) way in an age where so much digital shortcuts are available. The act of creation is intrinsically meditative and meaningful.

Robin Van Valkenburgh makes what she calls “pop surreal ceramics.”

Many of these inspire a sense of nostalgia in me, while catering to my love of the absurd (beloved childhood characters mix with traditional ceramic creatures and shapes).
