Tell me your most embarrassing travel moments! I’ll start.

Another post refreshed this deeply repressed embarrassing memory in my mind today, and the cringe-wound feels fresh again, so I thought I’d share it with you all.

We were staying in a luxury suite that had a personal room attendant who we met briefly when we arrived that afternoon. We were in a hurry to get out and explore, so we ditched our belongings in the room, and headed out to sightsee. When we returned late that evening, we were shocked to find that our luggage had been unpacked for us. Our toiletries were in the bathroom, neatly placed on his and hers trays; our clothes were hung, and shoes carefully lined … and then the kicker:

MY LINGERIE WAS SPLAYED OUT ON THE BED, ANGLED TOWARD THE DOOR, WITH A TRAIL OF ROSE PETALS LEADING UP TO AND SURROUNDING IT - A PLATE OF CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRIES AND A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE NEARBY.

I had a few pieces of lingerie in my bag, so this one had been chosen. And, the room attendant must’ve not noticed, but it had (I’m rocking in fetal position as I write this) …… already been used.

I. Was. Mortified.

Needless to say, I could not look our male room attendant in the eye for the remainder of the stay.

I don't really like watching travel vloggers any more

In general I find what they do is far removed from the time and budget constraints of the average person. I don't find watching them inspirational at all, but rather disheartening in that what they do is not really attainable for me.

Like many of them will spend a whole week or more just travelling to and from some out of the way temple, ruin, waterfall, mountain village, island, etc.

Obviously they can do things like this because vlogging is essentially their job and the trip basically pays for itself if not makes them money, but this is not the case for the vast majority of travellers.

They also almost always get invited for food or to a local's house, that's almost become a running trope in travel vlogging. Frankly I wonder if in many cases this is a pre-arranged set up, but I think it creates unrealistic expectations about what travel is really like.

It's like travel is being turned into a sort of weird spectator sport.

I basically find watching travel vloggers a bit depressing really as I feel my own trips and experiences just pale in comparison to the sheer scale and ambitiousness of the sort of things they get up to. It kind of makes me think "what's the point?".

I can't travel with other people any longer

After years of not travelling with other people, I decided to travel with a "friend" of mine. I put that in quotes because I thought we knew each other enough, but we didn't. Even before booking the trip I knew something was off and our goals were different.

I wanted to do something, he wanted to do something else. I wanted to wake up early like I always do, to go to the beach. He woke up at 1 PM every day unless I made a lot of noise purposefully to wake him up. We wasted 50% of the days because he had to sleep.

We only had one car so I couldn't even find an alternative to this. Not to mention he took HOURS to prepare himself to go out. It just pissed me off every time and I regret so damn much spending all that money on a wasted trip like that, especially since I was almost broke already but I thought "well, let's go anyway, you haven't had a vacation in 3 years".

I already travelled solo 3 years ago and it was 100 times better. I could do whatever I wanted, I had no restraints, I was free. Why the fuck did I decided to do this is something I haven't yet understood.

Summer travel in southern Europe —NO MORE

Advice

I’m completing a trip to Lisbon, Barcelona, and Rome in July. The heat is really unsafe (106°F, 41 centigrade today) and there are far too many tourists. It is remarkably unpleasant, and is remarkably costly. I only did this because it is my daughter’s high school graduation present. Since I don’t have to worry about school schedules anymore, I will NEVER return to southern Europe in the summer again. I will happily return in the spring and fall and would even consider the winter. Take my advice, if you have a choice avoid southern Europe (and maybe all of the northern hemisphere for leisure travel in the summer.

For those who have chosen to quit your job and travel, how did it turn out in the end?

Question

I am considering quitting from a decent job, but one that is not my passion, and travel for a year in SE Asia. Perhaps I'll be able to regain my job when I return, or maybe not. Do you think it's worth it? How was your experience? Did you have any regrets? I should mention that I've been to SE Asia a few years ago for a month, and I loved it, but I've never traveled for such an extended period before. My budget will be $15k is that enough?I will stay in hostels and cheap hotels.

What not to do as a travel blogger.

Not aimed at any particular person or website, just some thoughts about trends that annoy me. (Yes today is a rather slow day)

Have an actual opinion. Many blogs are trying harder than the local tourism board to promote how flawlessly perfect each destination is. It feels like a bland SEO race to the bottom where everything is described as a unique and popular destination.
Make it obvious what you did. I would be hard pressed to tell if some bloggers actually even went to the same continent as the destination in the post, or if they just combined 10 minutes of TripAdvisor and Wikipedia with some stock photos.
On which note I would rather see a wonky photo taken on a potato in poor light conditions than yet another stock photo. Sometimes a stock photo can nicely illustrate conditions or a view that you just couldn’t get (or missed the chance of) yourself, but when every last photo is a stock photo then it feels fake. Bonus points if the stock photo is clearly the wrong place which has a similar name.
If there are things that you didn’t do but think might be good then by all means mention them as ideas – but don’t confidently talk about how amazing they are. Don’t talk about somewhere being a cycling paradise with 152 bike routes (or whatever Komoot or the first result in Google says) none of which you rode and then back it up with a stock photo of somewhere else entirely.
Don’t get a bot to write it. If you didn’t experience it (or at least research it) yourself then you are not adding any value by just trying to pad your blog out. Best case it will just be bland, worst case you won’t know when it makes an obvious mistake and you are going to end up looking like an amateur.
If you collaborate with others make sure they actually know what they are talking about. I have seen guest posts from bloggers who barely knew the place they were covering and didn’t actually bother to check basic facts or even their spelling. One blogger has been the guest expert for a certain city numerous times, despite the fact they seemingly went there once, make many mistakes in each article, and don’t have anything to say beyond the very obvious.
Don’t make purely affiliate link posts. If you make a post about how you spent 1 night in Munich, then your top 10 places to stay in Munich is clearly meaningless booking.com affiliate linkage. Likewise when your top 10 day trips from Munich all happen to be GetYourGuide links with generic descriptions (and half of them are the same trip but with the sights in a different order) then it isn’t going to do much to convince me to put any trust in you.
Go easy on the adverts. I don’t mind a few, but when there is an advert between every paragraph/image then I am not sticking around to see what you have to say regardless of how good it is (especially if more are popping out of the header/footer and sidebar too).
Be transparent on any sponsorships. What does ‘Made in collaboration with X tourism’ mean?
Remember that everyone can see your ‘work with me’ page. You can make all the effort in the world to appear authentic and genuine, but then having a ‘work with me’ page that lists the numerous things you will do for money and cites your followers like a farmer counting livestock then it doesn't convince me too much as a reader.

Anyone else have a partner that is just not that into travel?

Question

I feel bummed that my partner is not anywhere near as into travel as I am . I want to share my experiences with her and feel held back in someways as I feel guilty going solo.

However I have full “leeway” so to speak and can go and do what I want with basically full support. Just want to hear other perspectives on this if anyone else can relate. I have a lifetime of traveling to go and don’t plan on stopping.

My solo travel after breakup

Me (26M) and my girlfriend had a trip planned to the UK and one week before departing she broke up with me, we had been together for almost 8 years.

It was a hard blow and I really struggled with taking or not the trip, i have never had traveled solo before and i was very afraid of only suffering in the trip, but I couldn't cancel the plane tickets so finally decided to go anyways and now, boarding my flight back to my country I think it was the best decision I could have made, I had such an amazing time, met some people that broadened my perspective and saw a lot of beautiful places that I could not have seen if I was with my ex-girlfriend.

The first week of the trip was pretty bad, I had to board the same plane as her and it really affected me seeing her again so well and happy meanwhile I was struggling with all of this. Also, when I got to London (my first destination) I went sightseeing and I discovered that I could feel happy and amazed seeing all these beautiful things but at the same time so bad because of the breakup. It felt like she left a hole in me and I was trying to fill it with all the beautiful stuff, but I realized that I couldn't, that maybe I had to close the hole with some other way or maybe it will be there forever. I cried a lot those days.

Then, in the second week, with each day passing by I started to feel better. I planned my trip to see a lot of the natural things of England (lake and peak district) with a lot of trekkings and being in the trails alone with the rain pouring over me, seeing the amazing scenery it was so envigorating. It felt really amazing and for the first time I realized that I would rather be there at that moment than have been somewhere else with my ex girlfriend. Obviously I had high and lows those days but I started to feel good being with myself, doing the things that I liked.

Then, the third and final week of my trip came where I went to main cities (Edimburg, Dublin and London) where I stayed in "party hostels" and I had so much fun meeting new people and going on pub crawls and stuff, I liked a lot to talk to all these people of different backgrounds and I was lucky to find a few with whom I was able to have a little deeper connection with.

So in conclusion, for me this first solo trip after breaking up helped me to heal and I loved that I decided to go instead of staying home. Now I have so many memories of the things that I did, now I know myself a lot better and on the plane home (where it's also my ex girlfriend) I was able to look at her and feel sure of myself and my worth as a person :).

So yeah, sorry for the long post, hope my perspective helps someone that's passing for something similar, I'm already looking forward my next solo trip.
